TL;DR at the bottom.

Even if you ignore Jon’s ‘rumors’, the writing is on the wall. Prior to last year’s WWDC, the four most requested features I have seen for the ipad since it’s inception, file system access, mouse support, external hard drive support, pro app support. Since Jony Ive left, the company is basically delivering upon each and everyone of these requests with pro apps being one of the last remaining holdouts.

What’s interesting to me is that apple didn’t release mouse support in ios14, but instead released it ahead of WWDC in a 13.x update. Then they release the magic keyboard with trackpad alongside one of the most minor refreshes of an ipad I have seen. The only reason I can think that they did this is because they want ipad pro fully positioned as a workstation device ahead of WWDC so they can unveil the pro suite of apps. It makes even more business sense when you look at where Mac is headed (ARM based, cross platform app support, interfaces that came from iOS).

I’ll bite my words if I have to, but I fully expect apple to Announce FCPX, Logic Pro X, and XCode at WWDC. I already said this before Jon, and now with him chiming in (he is pretty reliable), I’m certain of it.

TL;DR - Apple has delivered everything needed for ipad pro users to use newly released pro software. Pro software will be announced at WWDC.

Apple needed the magic keyboard to be announced alongside the new iPad Pro 2020. The spec bump was really underwhelming ... the keyboard was the most interesting part of the new release.

With that said, I hope you’re right and we’ll be seeing some of this stuff sooner rather than later.

I absolutely agree. In fact, I would go as far as saying that the Magic Keyboard was the actual product release. The ipad refresh was simply to support the sales of more magic keyboards, not the other way around.

I’ll be completely honest, and it will probably sound really dumb, but I bought the magic keyboard mostly because I know how indispensable it will be when editing video in final cut on ipad. I ultimately only bought it because I am certain that it is coming.

You do know Jony Ive didn’t have anything to do with software, right?

I feel sorry for Jony Ive. He get the blame for everything. He is a designer that helped Apple to become what it is. Remember that the iPad was conceived by Steve Jobs and I think that Apple as such had hard time to go away from the basic ideas of the iPad due to it being SJ legacy. Hardly Jony fault single handed. We are now really post SJ.

FCPX, Logic Pro and Xcode is only a logical continuation of a process that based on the success of iPads and the AYYX.

I suppose I have said that very poorly. I have nothing but praise for Jony Ive and the things he brought to the world. I just mean to say that in the short time since his absence, things have progressed significantly for ipad. It’s likely these same improvements would have occurred even if he remained on with the company.

What is AYYX?

Not entirely true. Starting with iOS 7, Jony Ive was placed in charge of UI and software design. It also seems like a given that Jony would have been involved in the company’s planning.

AYYX = A9X, A10X, A12X. Well now we have a A12X version II aka A12Z. The progress we see only coincide with Jony going away from Apple. He had nothing to do with node shrinks and processor design which is the heart of the abilities of the iPad for more resource demanding software. Lovely development for us who like the iPad. I would still buy an iMac today for some tasks (3D modelling, "r coding" and screen size for office work).

I know, but that does not equal to abilities of the OS. The clumsy file management of iPad is a legacy of app sandboxing and phone GUI - something designed by SJ and Forstall. Jony and the whole Apple team just continued in their track after these two where gone and I agree had Apple difficulties to move forward. Not difficult to undertand really.

Ahhh ok thanks for clarifying the AYYX. Yeah it certainly is an interesting time for the ipad. I agree too that mac will be essential forever basically. I personally have an imac and an ipad pro. I haven’t been too tempted to get a laptop at any point, but as more time goes on, there are less and less reasons to feel tempted at all.

I think Apple will be able to smartly optimize Xcode and Final Cut Pro for iPad even though the pro-editions only has 4-6GB of RAM. I think they will make the programs able for iPads with 4+ GB of RAM. Otherwise it will be very limiting.

All this talk about RAM, do we even know if the 6gb on the new iPads is fully usable or if it’s the same implementation as the 1tb 2018 iPad where apps are still limited to 4gb and 2gb reserved for the os?

Answered my own question.

The new iPads have the same implementation as the 2018 1tb model. So we still don’t have 6gb to play with, regardless of iPad model.

That sucks a bit

It does, but there has been a ‘demo’ of shortcuts using the full 6gb on the 2018 iPad. So potentially Apple can bypass their own software limit and utilise it if they wanted to.

But if they did this and limited the ‘pro’ apps to just the 2020 model, that would be quite the blow to the 1tb 2018 users 😬 - hopefully they don’t go down this route.

I've a 2020 iPad coming just in this instance because of this worry.

Do you have more info on this demo?

I know what Tim said in the org announcement and Jony Ive narrated the iOS 7 video but outside of the initial redesign my guess is he had very little to do with iOS software, certainly not whether pro software would come to iPad. Craig Federighi’s bio always said he was responsible for the company’s “user interface“. And let‘s not forget Ive gave up day to day responsibility to focus on Apple Campus and Apple stores. I doubt he was spending any time on software.

I’ve seen a lot of people who should know better claim Ive was responsible for software. There is little evidence Ive was responsible for anything outside of the original iOS 7 redesign and of course Apple Watch. He certainly wouldn’t have been making decisions around whether pro-level software came to iPad. Who knows how Steve Jobs would have pivoted were he still alive. But I’ll bet he would have supported iPad being more than just a big iPhone.

I think Final Cut Pro coming to the iPad Pro would be great! it’s a really good piece of software on the Mac.

Per Apple's spec's, FCPX requires 4 GB of RAM for basic edits (1080p), 8 GB for 4K and 1 GB of VRAM. If Apple is indeed bringing this to iPad Pro, Apple would need to release a brand new iPad with perhaps 16 GB RAM. Part of the RAM is for the system. While iOS does use RAM differently then MacOS, this app will need serious processing power. I dont think Apple will half-ass this. Most content creators edit both 1080p and 4K. Apple can not release an iPad with 8 GB or RAM and have Final Cut use all 8 GB. Prepare yourselves for either two things.

1. Its all a lie. FCPX is not coming to iPadOS in 2020.
or
2. Apple announces Final Cut Pro X alongside a brand new iPad.

Perhaps the requirements change when on an ARM based machine?

You do know you cant compare tech specs from a traditional computer to something mobile and optimized with less overhead and resources like an ipad right?

You can only optimize for mobile to a certain point. Working with video takes memory and horsepower. Those frames don’t get any smaller or easier to work with just because you’re on a mobile device.

Logic Pro is the only app I use macOS for at this point. So this would make my portable workflow significantly better.

I do wonder though how plugins will be handled... so many 3rd party extensions that are much haves in most studios. Kontakt, Melodyne, etc.... Time will tell.
