Definitely hold off on 11.6. My testing Mac Pro has not successfully booted in quite a few attempts now. I can see latebloom doing its thing in verbose mode, so it is loaded.

Edit: Took about twelve reboots for it to finally get back into the desktop after updating to 11.6.

I've successfully updated to BS 11.6. The install process hung once. After that, it ended normally (two warm boots without issues, if I counted correctly). After that, it got to the 11.6 Desktop without any problems. After that, I've rebooted twice (warm boots) without issues.

BaseSystem booting loads the entire environment into memory, thus removing the dependency on hardware disk controllers. Similar idea to how Internet Recovery doesn't require a physical disk present, instead the firmware downloads into memory and then boots the BaseSystem

I would hold off on 11.6 - my config with latebloom - which has been very solid booting - is broken right now. It is either hanging shortly after entering phase 2 or after the apple logo appears and the progress bar appears (i am using verbose output so I don't know what is causing the hang after the apple logo appears).

I'm in Mojave working on trying to adjust my delays to see if I can figure out my issue and as of now I don't see any reasons. I will try some different delays but I've never had a hang after getting to the apple logo previously without or with latebloom and verbose mode.
I finally got to the desktop however my reboots - both cold and warm - are much worse than with 11.5.2. definitely toughest update since 11.2.3.

I am getting hangs in phase 2. i am going to have to do more work on the delay.

Another successful V21 warm boot. I previously had issues with warm boots that required power off /on to clear.

v21 latebloom, 11.6 update, required 1 hard reset post the full install and when it rebooted, it hung.

Once I powered off and on, it continued to boot fine for all the remaining update.

HI, did anyone experienced issues with NVME drives? I can boot each time to Big Sur with 2,5inch SSD's install from one SSD to another fresh big sur but NVME is no go it's stuck 1/2 way through. It works when it's formatted as secondary storage.

I've been too busy with early school year rollout and chaos to get back here, but one thing I've been trying to find on my small fleet of Mac Pros is a single Latebloom setting that's *reasonably* universal for booting and also *reasonably* reliable while installing updates.

It looks to me like a delay in the low 200s (I'm narrowing it down to around 220 currently) with a range of around 5 - 10 is working pretty well. It's a much longer delay than most of them seem to actually require, but like I said I'm trying to find a single setting that works well across a wide number of machines and a slightly longer boot time is not a concern in my case. I'll try updating a couple of lesser-used systems later today if I get the time.

It seems to me that 11.6 has worsened the situation but out of (perverse) curiosity, has anyone tried installing/booting 11.6 with latebloom disabled? Would that yield any useful information as to why the latest update fails even more?

Thanks!

I have just completed the update to BS11.6. In my case, it was easier to update to 11.6 than to update from 11.5 to 11.5.2.

I concur with @ZNDK: For me, the 11.6 update was faster and cleaner than everything after 11.2.3 and I’ve been unable to detect any shortcomings of latebloom. It works, at the very least, as well as 11.5.2, if not clearly better. Perhaps the improvement I notice is limited to systems booting from rotational drives?

Update:
I had to change my latebloom setting for 11.6 because it was hanging to much. Here's what seems to be working after 10 warm and cold reboots.

Five Mac Pros updated to 11.6 thus far with latebloom=222 (simply because it's .0000001 seconds faster to type than 220) and range = 5. Two updated with no hard resets. One required three resets. Two required a single reset each. Not too bad.

... but writing this explanation is simply x seconds slower.......

Perhaps you could install Latebloom check and post the results here (see post #685).
Simply because that makes sense.

Yes, I do plan on doing so. I'm 100% of the I.T. staff for our school however, and that includes anything remotely tech related, plus support for staff and students, and it's the beginning of the school year, so... Let's just say I'm rushed. ? ? But yes, I did see the Latebloom check post and will do so as soon when I get some time.

Updated another machine late today at 222 / 5 and it required only a single hard reset to complete the update.

FWIW, 11.6 hung a couple of times on the upgrade, and since then has been entirely reliable. I have altered Latebloom settings slightly from my original posting:

I've made a script to

1st: check if the latebloom kext was loaded
2nd: check boot log if latebloom made hooks (in some situations those logs can't be written. If the PCI Delay messages from latebloom are visible the hook is present anyway).

V12: Edit/enhancement: with latebloom 0.22 Syncretic added creating a dummy /dev/latebloom in case the boot log was not written. So latebloom_check_v12 probes this if no hooks were found in the boot log.

3rd: ask for cold or warmboot
4th: Do a quick analyse of the system: Real Mac Pro Model (3,1/4,1/5,1) because spoofing, OpenCore Version, and a discrete basic hardware dump without serials, IDs or names).
5th: Ask to copy this dump in the clipboard with Code and Spoiler Tags for easy posting. If it has double Line Feeds make a Spoler and Code Tag in your posting.

V13: Enhancement: Spoiler Tag, Name of Spoiler is the latebloom settings if set

@Syncretic took a quick look over the script and it's ok with him. Latebloom timing are visible in the boot-args line.

Might I suggest a small change to the script.
When you are using ioreg to get the system serial number, you're sending a ton of data through grep that isn't really needed and having ioreg poll way more things than is needed.

I ended up looking at this because when attempting to run the script it was hanging so i was stepping through the actions the script does manually and noted that for some reason when ioreg gets part way through USB it hangs indefinitely so the collection script never completes. While i'll need to determine the cause of that hang as it is probably something specific to this machine (a cMP 5,1 clone basically ... G5 case, with SuperMicro MB with dual x5680, booting opencore legacy as there's no EFI on this board, it is BIOS only)

Limiting the depth that ioreg searches significantly reduces what is being polled from the entire system to just the most basic of info that does contain what you're looking for and also has some of the other details you use other commands to poll.

basically you're adding the depth limit and setting it to '2' so it doesn't traverse beyond what's needed, probably reduces run time as well.

change the line from this:
Code:
set serial_number to last word of (do shell script "ioreg -l | grep 'IOPlatformSerialNumber'")
to this:
Code:
set serial_number to last word of (do shell script "ioreg -ld 2 | grep 'IOPlatformSerialNumber'")

If you just run "ioreg -ld 2" on its own you'd see this is like 40 lines of text, compared to thousands of lines from the full ioreg output.

will add this to latebloom_check_v14 after testing it on real Macs, thanks for the suggestion :)

edit: took some measurings: the 1st line takes about 0.3 seconds, the 2nd line about a blink of an eye (on a real Mac Pro 4,1 2.66 quadcore)

edit2: updated to v14, it's just a performance update.
