Is it not something that can be changed with Nova etc?

LG's UI just like Samsung's TouchWiz is more than just the 'launcher'. Changing the launcher for an alternative and applying an icon pack only goes so far.

You could go further and jettison/disable their own stock apps which sadly are also a mishmash of aesthetics and download all the Google stock applications (dialler/calendar etc.) and try making them the defaults. However you would still be left with remnants of the poor UI, such as LG's stock dialler for incoming calls (even if your using google's dialler for outgoing) and the settings and the backbone would still be very much LG.

Essentially it boils down to this for me... if you are going to so much trouble to mask / nullify the OEM's skin and turn it into something else (which for me is essentially a stock android look) then it really is painfully obvious that in that instance you would be better served just buying something that comes with a more stock UI. Because no matter how much you 'mask' LG's skin and stock applications, you are still going to be reminded all too often that there is still so much you can't change.

Edited for grammar as apparently some are very sensitive about that around here ... ;)

Ok, that makes sense. I guess I've been quite spoiled with the Moto X's near-Nexus skin.

By the way, reading your post would have been much more pleasant with the correct usage of "you're".

Spot on. Same goes for Touchwiz.

Nova + icon packs + Google apps installed, can only do so much. You still have the manufacturers UI running in the background, it's still there. It would be best if Samsung and LG really revamped their UI's to not be in the 'Gingerbread' stone age still. They don't need to go as far as stock Nexus OS, that can be a little too light on features. But some middle ground would be nice, and at least make core functions like the Settings and Dialer, etc...to match vanilla Android.

We'll see...

My thoughts at the moment:

-I think that always on is possibly an indication that we're getting AMOLED. Now that would be a welcome change.
-Still don't see the utility in always on. Sure, there's notifications, and the time, but how hard is it to double tap the screen, or just put a notification light? Plus, it would get in your face loads.
-This should be the power-user's dream. Big screen, removable battery, expansion slot, high-end processor etc. All without compromising a premium (albeit ugly) build.
-I haven't used LG software, but it seems customisable and straightforward. Can somebody tell me what is so bad about it?
-Still waiting to see how they utilise the dual camera. I really hope that they go with my previous theory of one for detail and one for light.

Forgive me. Trying to write a post whilst walking the dogs on a miserable windy day with the rain and hail lashing off me, meant I wasn't paying too much attention to correct punctuation/grammar or misc auto-correct memes. ;)

You're forgiven. But for future reference, perhaps leave replying to online threads to a more suitable time.

There's no way you are serious ?

I never understood the whole Grammar Nazi crowd, a very strange group not living in reality. In the grand scheme of things, in the huge universe that's 14 billion years old, and this planet is 4.5 billion years old, with us living on it, does it really make that big of a deal, if you don't put the " ' " or the " , " in the correct spot ? I think if you get the main point across that's all that matters on a gadget site. This is a tech forum, for fun, not a college thesis paper.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
This 'alway's on' just seems utterly utterly pointless to me? Because you are hardly going to watch your phones screen all the time? I mean does it really mean they keep a part of the screen permanently on showing information? Wasting battery life?

The G5's buttons will be setup like the Nexus 6P, with the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, with the volume buttons on the side. It will have a 5.6" screen, but very compact overall, with minimal top and bottom bezels, and should be a lot smaller than the Nexus 6P, with pretty much the same size screen.

Add to that the all new high end metal build, and beautiful design, that rumors say rival the HTC One series and Apple's iPhone quality.

Only a week away until the official announcement :)

I think I am more excited to see what LG has done to the G5 than Samsung is doing with the S7.
We know what is coming on the S7 with just some upgrades. But the G5 seems to be a needed design update.
Moving the buttons to the side of the phone is huge. I hated them on the back tbh.

Agreed, I have lost all interest in the S7, it's just another nice boring upgraded smartphone from Samsung. I am just tired of Samsung lately. Especially their design, it seems the same old same old, yeah they have a nice metal / glass high quality build now, but the front, which you see all the time, really looks no different at all for years now. The Samsung logo name on the front is just bad. The cheesy shiny speaker grill on the top, and the chrome ringed home button. I'm tired of that lame front. I like black monolith designs, nothing on the front, just all black.

The G5 looks to be a fresh original design, which is what attracts me, something new and different. Let's just hope LG's UI is much overhauled ? If not at least hoping for unlock bootloader to install CM13 ROM.

Plus the G5 is 5.6", which is a sweet size, especially LG's way of making their phone very compact, and the S7 is just 5.1", which I am no fan of.

I love the design of my Note 5. It is a great phone. But the S7 and edge models will not be offering too much of an upgrade over my N5.
My biggest issues with LG has been the volume buttons on the back witch is not intuitive for me. Then the LG skin is horrible. If I can get rid of that skin with a rom that is a bonus. Hopefully they don't move the volume buttons in the same spot as the 6P. In my use of the 6P the ergonomics of the fingerprint scanner and the volume/wake/sleep buttons was not well thought out. I found myself always hitting the wake/sleep button when using the scanner to unlock my phone.
Hopefully LG doesn't do this.

Opinion: LG G5 needs great software if it’s going to be a market-leading smartphone
http://9to5google.com/2016/02/03/lg-g5-software-opinion/

Great article, and I totally agree. The G5 could be shaping up to be the best smartphone of 2016 possibly, BUT...if the software and LG's UI still blows, that could kill the whole thing, no matter how fast and high end the hardware is, or how amazing and beautiful the phone design and materials are. If the software is a bogged down lag fest, forget it.

Yeah, to me it seems like everyone is now very close when it comes to hardware. While the edge to me still goes to Apple and Samsung, the gap is tiny between them and everyone else.

What I'm most intrigued about this year is software. Can Samsung finally optimize touchwiz so the hardware can truly shine, and will they bring this new version of touchwiz to their existing lineup or force us to buy new hardware to get it? Will Apple finally open up and allow some customizations? If not, what other new features could they possibly add to iOS? Will LG be able to clean things AND optimize, something Samsung wasn't able to do last year?

Perks of being left handed:p. Well then again some right handed persons hold their phones in their left hand. For me, my fingers are nowhere near the power button when I hold it in my left hand (my hands are average to small). I always loved LG placement of the power and volume buttons. Much easier for me than side or top mounted buttons. However I know this is very subjective and there is no right or wrong....well unless the power button is at the top :D

I always hated that placement because I put my phones on my car dash, so if I need to turn up the volume I have to unclip it to get to the buttons.
