Wow, unlocked G6 (all NA carriers) for $599 with a free LG style watch and no tax outside of NJ/NY at BH photo. I'm very tempted to grab this, if I wasn't in NJ I probably would have already. I wonder if the bootloader will be unlocked as well on this version.

Should be bootloader unlockable.

Everyone raves about OLED displays. Well 5 months with the iPhone 7 Plus LCD display made me think differently, I liked it a lot.

Got the S8+ and the AMOLED screen just looked so strange and hard to adjust too. Not digging it all. Even tried all 4 different settings. One of the reasons I returned it.

LG G6 display reminds me of the sharp and clear accuracy from the 7 Plus.

Am I crazy for liking LCD over AMOLED ?

No. It's more color accurate. But that's a preference thing. I like both.

Maybe... ;) I think the display on my 7 plus is great, but it's nowhere as nice as a Samsung AMOLED. But these things are definitely very personal and IMO you get used to the screen you stare at all day very quickly and then they all kind of look the same. I'm more interested in AMOLED because of the power savings, and the ability to selectively turn on pixels, etc. Even if Apple woke up out of their blind stupor and implemented a dark mode, it would still be pretty bright because the entire screen is still lit up.

LCD. It's better than the Amoled in my Pixel outdoors but my iPhone 7 is still easier to see outdoors. The S8 will be one of the brightest displays.

I have seen reviews of the G6 criticise about outdoor viewing but they were manually adjusting brightness and if you do that it doesn't go into the super-bright mode that leaving in auto does.
To think back in the Nokia N85 days (essentially the 1st AMOLED Display Phone), how rubbish AMOLED was outside.

In actual fact I think AMOLED only became good for outdoors in the Galaxy S4, before that it was still pretty crap.

No I prefer it too tbh. I don't like artificial over saturation. That being said I like the Samsung displays once adjusted to basic.

But yeah the G6 has a really good display colour wise.

Plus you get the full sub-pixel array with LCD as opposed to the diamond pentile which means you actually get slightly sharper clarity as more sub-pixels are lit with an LCD at WQHD than on an AMOLED with WQHD.

However Samsung's recent brightness NIT ratings since S6 have been fantastic for outdoor viewing pushing brighter than other LCD's despite that sub-pixel array.

Full RGB subpixel AMOLED are supposed to be around the corner though which should give the benefits of colour accuracy and the benefits of darker blacks ... Hopefully Note 8 & Apple iPhone 8 choose to go with these new RGB AMOLED panels rather than the current diamond matrix of Samsung's Super OLED.

Yeah outside of Samsung's Super OLED other AMOLED panels I've had have been crap. The S4 was actually poop outdoors too - it was from Note 3 onwards they got good outdoors.

The Pixel's AMOLED panels are not great outdoors and neither are Moto's from their earlier X's and later Moto X Force. Never tried Moto Z range.

Yeah AMOLED used to suck cheese outdoors. Way too dim.

But that's only recently changed inlsst year or two. Now the SO is super bright outside.

I never thought I'd see the day when somebody else liked LCD as much as me! With the S7 Edge, I was drawn in by the inky blacks and punchy color. Now that I have the S8 I'm finding a hard time liking it even with all 4 settings. The 7 Plus LCD is pretty perfect as far as LCD's go.

I HATE OLED screens.

All my Samsung S phones had burn-in less than a year after buying them. My last S6 had it 9 months after I bought it!

And I also dislike the over saturation. I'm so so happy with a nice IPS screen like the one on my Huawei Nova Plus or the one I had with the iPhone 6S Plus.

I tend to avoid phones with OLED screens for these reasons.

Anyway, right now here the G5 is 549€ this week new and I've seen it at 450€ second hand.

Just two weeks ago it was 720€ new!

Wonder how soon we'll see mled displays from vendors like Apple.
MicroLED was first developed, invented as far back as year 2000, I suspect they are far more difficult to produce or expensive to produce than anticipated. They've been shown off at the big shows in prototype form for a few years and yet still no actual release our end product with them. First prototype was a display in 2011 with a 640x480 resolution .....

Coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, I used the feature of YouTube playing in the background on a daily basis.

On Android I start playing a news clip or song then tab out to my web browser or stop watch, or any other app, and the media goes off.

How do I keep YouTube playing the background ?

yeah rumor is that mled will make an appearance on the apple watch 3 potentially. I look forward to seeing the technology.

YouTube RED ... subscription.

Or grab a Google Play Music sub which gives you YouTube Red as a bonus.

Sadly. YouTube/Google still have yet to push YouTube Red outside of USA which is annoying as YouTube Key its precursor was available in other countries, until they decided to replace it with Red.

I grabbed YT Red quite awhile ago, I am always listening to music there and needed to have it running in the background.

As far as color on the LG G6, I have a test. Try searching 4k hoverboard on youtube and go to the one by devin supertramp. It is about 3 minutes. What do you think of the color on this, and how about it versus other smartphones you have?

Will check that out later. I have tried some of the new Netflix content which is HDR on the G6 and looks amazing. But it's hard comparing to other devices as you are not sure if it's the HDR or display differences (resolution, type etc..) that are making the difference or if it's the HDR. Tbh, it's the same issue I faced when I bought my LG HDR 10 TV and watched some 4k UHD. Whilst they looked great I couldn't say it was a huge difference over other Blu-ray 1080p versions on my non HDR capable FHD TV's.

Ok so all playback at 1440p at around 80% brightness on all devices.

Pixel - much too saturated especially as the video has a high colour saturation.

iPhone 7 - close to the G6 but slightly muddier colours and the blue sky wasn't as clean.

G6 - fell between the Pixel & iPhone 7 but remained brighter with clearer skies and cleaner defined colours all round.

The video isn't HDR or at least YouTube app on phones doesn't support HDR yet.

That being said the difference wasn't 'massive' between all of them and tbh unless you were micro-analysing it side by side as I did I would doubt you would notice the difference and would be happy with any of them in isolation.

That's weird. I found OLED displays to be in a completely different league than LCD. Watching videos on an OLED is a stunner with the infinite blacks.

Have you tried it? How accurate is it?
No. I'll give it a go now and report back.

Ok so what happens after you set it up is that you lock your device.

Then when you wake screen (it's shows locked at bottom and then within a second or two looking at the device it reports 'unlocked by smart lock' and you swipe then to go to home screen. It doesn't automatically go to home screen after unlock, you still have to swipe. I guess this is so that you can check lock screen notifications and interact with them whereas if it just jumped to home screen after smart unlocking you would not be able to view lock screen info.

Played with a co-worker's yesterday. Yikes - stutter city. I wonder if he had a buggy device or that skin is just that poorly optimized. I had a G3 a couple of years ago and remember it being pretty smooth.

Strange. The first Korean G6 I had did have some stutters, but the model I have currently is smooth and fast with nary a stutter or hiccup. It is as fast as my Pixel side by side and GUI and animations are all fluid and seems to keep to the target 60fps.

I wonder if it is the carrier ROMs or regional firmwares thay are to explain the difference. Honestly if this one stuttered or hiccup I would be first to complain but thankfully haven't had to and it remains a very fast speedy device for me.
