Yikes. The people who preordered at full price must be upset. I think they could have held their ground on pricing at $600 if they would just have given us the same specs they gave Korea.

But again the confusion here seems to stem from questioning whether its LG who are subsidising cost or merely facilitating carriers who are subsidising cost themselves with extras in an attempt to tie users to a new 24 month contract on their networks.

As I said earlier we should not see offers like these as indicative of sales or demand but just as carrier incentives. After all we don't assume Samsung or Apple are struggling when carriers offer Buy One Get One Free offers shortly before or after product launch.

Sadly in the States, the high end smartphone market has become a two player game, only iPhone's and Galaxy phones. Both Apple and Samsung are so large, and have such crazy amounts of money to flood the market with advertising, and get the product out to the masses like no other. Those two almost have a monopoly on the market, very difficult for anyone else to get anywhere close to them.

Sad to say but LG will only work in the mid range market here in the States.

Plus the G6 is ho hum, yeah it's nice, but nothing amazing.

If I could recommend to LG their G6 should have been like this;

-Wait for the SD 835
-6GB RAM
-OLED display tech from their beautiful TV's
-I like the size and shape of the G6, they did that right, so keep as is.
-IP68 is on there, so good on that
-UI sucks, just to plain and lame. I would scrap it an make it a GPE phone, running stock Android.
-Market the ever living heck out of this phone, flood the market with advertising

It really doesn't need the 835 or 6gb ram. Ram management is already better on it than One Plus 3T with 6gb and even better than the Pixels ram management despite running a skinned version of Android.

What it needed was a global launch that wasn't utterly overshadowed by the S8 down to bad timing and a SENSIBLE price of around $550/€599/£499 from outset.

Likewise OLED is just a subjective preference as the LCD panel on the G6 is incredible with great colour accuracy, some of the best black levels ever on an LCD with no issues with lightbleed.

I've been using this device all day and despite installing / setting up all my apps and accounts I have 5 hours of SOT and 18% battery left.

Performance is as near to my pixel as I could have wanted, and whilst I am not a fan of LG's launcher, the rest of the skin is very good and coherent and offers enhancments like scalable window in window when multi-windowing unlike the pixel which only allows halving screen.

I don't think you would ever be happy with anything other than stock Android and one with latest specs for the sake of them. That is ok to want that, but that does mean it clouds your judgment.

I was playing with the demo G6 in our store today and I love it.
It's such a nice phone.

I also really liked LG's stock keyboard, which is not what can be said for Samsung's.

The screen is the most impressive thing though. I think it's got a great panel. Everything looks sharp, colours are nice and vibrant.
The feel of the phone is also top notch, good materials used and a nice weight.

I'd definitely look at buying one if there were comparable deals over here like the one posted above. But then again it doesn't take much for me as I am a tech whore. o_O

Biggest question. Battery life ?

Will the G6 be comparable to the great 7 Plus battery ?

True words here.

Maybe a smidge of Note when it isn't exploded makes the 3rd phone in this list outside of galaxy line and apple.

G6 won't be known by 75% of consumers unless pushed and bundled such as these. Sales are very low or they are forecasting them releasing so close to a powerhouse like the S8.

It's a fantastic deal and the phone is not too bad either.

Nope, because of battery size while bigger the display resolution comes into play so it is not fair to compare them. What display above 1080p gets great battery life?

The Last Shangri-La
Anyone having problems with not hearing the other side on regular calls (not VoIP etc)? I've had this happen to me several times now. Phone rings, I answer and I can't hear the other person. The other person can hear me but says I sound like I'm far away in a tunnel or something.

It works fine after the 3rd or 4th try, but the first two times are always like that. I'm with T-Mo in a large city so reception shouldn't be a problem (could be wrong). I'm wondering if its T-Mo's HD voice feature - I switched from an iPhone 7 and an HTC 10 before that and never had any issues with calls.

Great phone, but this not hearing calls thing is really annoying. Good thing I don't need calls for anything important. I'm on JoD so thinking about the S8 too - I've had the G6 just over a month so wanted to give it another month or so but not if I can't use it to make calls...

I get that on my iPhone (it's on Vodafone) and not on my androids which are on Three or iD networks however if I swap Sims around it happens on them too so I suspect it is related to Network more likely than device however you may need to swap your SIM into another device to see if issue is on that device, if not it could be your G6.

Nice review. They make it sound like this phone has great battery life ? Bit I thought with the small 3,300mAh battery and last year's SD821 ( which isn't as efficient as the SD835 ) that the G6 would just have mediocre better life ?

I saw it in the T-Mobile store, and must admit I liked the feel in hand and flat screen more do then the S8.

And the so called "tough build quality" harder to break idea on this phone is always welcomed. I'd fear the S8 could so easily shattered on small clumsy drops.

I've dropped my iPhone 7 Plus off the bed covers to hardwood floor and zero issues. And other like 3 foot drops my 7 Plus handle with ease. I assume this G6 is just as tough if not more so ?

I'm just concerned with battery life going to a G6 from my 7 Plus ?

And how's the screen outdoors ? Is the G6 as good or better outside then the 7 Plus ?

@MRU

Does LG give you customization options to enhance battery life like Samsung did with Nougat? Like dropping resolution to 1080p or 720p, customizing AOD's scheduled timing, enhanced power saving modes that turn the screen black or grayscale?

5 hrs of SOT + 19% remaining is good. Better than my S8, but my S8 gets me through the day, so that's all that matters.

Yeah you can schedule AOD to suit yourself and there are correction modes such as grayscale that you can flip to easily in settings and then toggle via the notification widget.

There isnt a resolution drop but there is a powersaving mode and such but I haven't bothered enabling that at all tbh.

Yesterday wasn't great battery wise only sufficient but then I was roaming in another country and accessing DATA inside venues where signal was poor and on aeroplanes and using the phone as my primary camera.

I got about 3 hours SOT from 3am - 12pm (so 21 hours on battery) with 10% remaining when I finally put it on charge.

Like yourself it gets me through a day so I don't worry about it and yesterday was an extreme test but it held on.

Honestly the 7 Plus will likely have much better battery but if your finishing the day with 40-60% battery left on the 7+ then you will get through a day with the G6 albeit ending on maybe 20-30%. But if your finishing a day with 10% on your 7+ then yes the battery may not be enough.

Screen outdoors is comparable to my iPhone 7 and better than my Pixel.

On a typical workday at night when plugging in my 7 Plus I'm down to like 20% or so. I unplug the phone fully charged at 6:00AM, and put it back on the charger at 10:30PM.

40% to 60% Battey left at end of the night ? Never. And I have GPS off, most background stuff not sync. I have a ton of stuff OFF. No iCloud. Very few apps set to refresh. Don't use Facebook or Twitter apps or anything like that.

I never game on my phone. I just make a ton of phone calls. Million texts. E-mail a lot. Surf the web a ton. Little YouTube here and there.

My next smartphone needs to get at least the same battery life as my iPhone 7 Plus. Preferably better. Because night I watch YouTube videos after work I drain the battery down to 10% by 8:00pm

I see you going with the iPhone OLED model tbh. AMOLED Tech itself should increase battery life. With a possible 8nm-10nm A11 processor + iOS, you will see even better battery life than the 7+. Quick charge and wireless charging expands your options too. Time will tell though because Apple could lose prospective buyers, such as myself, because I am used to big screen phones nowadays, especially around the 5.5" mark. I am probably going to jump to a Note 8 as my next phone because it's hard to give up the Iris Scanner, Samsung Pay, Samsung Pass, and other software features an iPhone 8 could not provide. Though if Apple makes expanded biometrics, enhanced multi-tasking, and a quality OLED model, I am open minded.

I've lost count how many smartphones I have had the past ten years. Close to 20 or so. And I am typically a big time Android nerd, specifically a Nexus fan, and do not like the iPhone. I just prefer the freedom and customization of stock Android, plus a nexus / Pixel has no bloatware and any app can be deleted and uninstalled, and it has more tweaks and features than Touchwiz and Sense. I'm talking ROM's of course, every Nexus phone I've owned was rooted and ROM'd within the first 24 hrs. No point even getting those phones and staying on stock, like LOL, why buy a Pixel if not going to root it at least.

Anyways, the iPhone though has some serious good battery life. I had the iPhone 6 Plus, and now the 7 Plus, and both of those rank up there as top battery champs for my smartphone history. Even though I do not really like iOS much at all, the Notification system just blows. The Phone dialer app sucks balls. iMessage is ok at best, I just do not get what all the fuss about it. I'd take Textra or Google Messenger over iMessage all day long.

But a few things have kept me with my 7 Plus since December;

- Battery life, and standby time is superb, just great.
- Smoothness of iOS is shockingly nice, I very very rarely ever get stutter or lag on my iPhone 7 Plus, it's just always smooth, the same smoothness constantly, like flowing water, always on and the same speed. That is very refreshing, and unexpected, but I really like it.
- Widgets, this is a totally surprise to me, but I might say I really like the Widget panel on the left screen, and the way it works, with different apps, etc... not saying it's better than Android, no, but different in a good way, but for sure could be tweaked to be even better.
- The rest of the iPhone and iOS I can give two craps about, and don't really like it.

Just a correction for some wrong info I posted earlier re: resolution changing on the G6.

You can do this it is in the performance settings and is reserved for Games to get better performance and save battery.

Much like how Samsung used to reserve it for game centre where the option would have best effect.

----

Just giving LG's own launcher a try as I pretty much used ASAP since I got the device. It's actually pretty good and very fast once it's cleaned up and apps put in folders or hidden.

Samsung probably based its spec stats off the default FHD in all likelihood tbh.
