Here's a thread talking about USB-C switches https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/two-computers-and-one-studio-display.2337419/post-31031829
if you had a 27MD5KL, and the USB-C port of the ASUS worked with the Wacom then it would probably work directly connected to the 27MD5KL.Hi guys,
so I've been reading this topic for several weeks now, however, sadly I still can get this to work.
I am using the LG UltraFine 5K display and an ASUS ROG Strix G15 G513.
I've connected the Wacom (the middle of the three ports) to the USB-C (DisplayPort 1.4) of the ASUS
I've connected the Ultrafine 5K via USB-C (using the Wacom USB-C cable) to the USB-C port on the side of the Wacom
It still doesn't even show up anything. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Greetings
Edit: I've also tried it with a USB-C cable from my iPad
Edit2: Nvm, I've the 27MD5KA - guess I am rekt
Thanks for the tip.Hello everyone,
I have owned the LG Ultrafine 4k for a few days, since the COVID-19 pandemic made work from home mandatory for most Canadians. I love the display, but was struggling to connect it to my work laptop (which doesn’t have USB-C).
After hours of research, 7 different adapters, I finally found the one.
The Wacom Link Plus for Cintiq Pro 13/16 (ACK42819) takes the Mini Display Port signal from your Windows computer and convert it to a USB-C DP-Alt mode signal that your LG UltraFine will recognize.
This adapter even has a supplemental USB Micro-B to USB-A cable that you can connect to your Windows computer so that the speaker work.
The brightness controls also do show up in the Device Manager, so there might be a way of making it work, but unfortunately I cannot tinker with that since I do not have the admin privileges of my work laptop.
The display controls such as brightness can be controlled by this Windows app. It doesn't require that the Micro-B USB cable be plugged to the Wacom, as it uses the DCC protocol over DisplayPort.
The LG Display remembers the brightness from your Mac so you can control it from there by disconnecting the Windows laptop and connecting it to your Mac if like me you cannot install the app on your work computer.
Below is a picture of how you need to plug the Wacom!

Note that the HDMI port will not work. Also the UltraFine 4K will work at full resolution, but the UltraFine 5K (2019 and later) will max out at 4K.
Cheers!
did you get it to work? I have the same problem, thanksHello,
I have a DELL Latitude 5420. It has two 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports with DisplayPort Alt Mode/USB4/Power Delivery.
Would I be able to connect the following Ultrafine models: 27MD5KA (5k old model) and 22MD4KA (4k) at the same time?
Thunderbolt 4 should be backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3, or am I wrong?
I would appreciate any help !
hi, did you find a way to do this? thanksHi all, I've been reading through this thread and reading up online about connecting my new Microsoft Surface Pro 7 to my LG Ultrafine 5k monitor. I find myself still a bit confused about what's possible.
My normal work machine is a 2018 Macbook Pro. However, for various reasons I need to switch over from time to time to use this new Windows machine. And I'd just like to be able to unplug the Macbook when needed, and swap in the Surface. I'm less worried about getting an amazing resolution out of the Surface.
My Windows machine:
Microsoft Surface Pro 7, i7 16GB memory 256GB SSD (product page)
My LG Ultrafine monitor:
LG Ultrafine 5k, model: 27MD5KA-B
(I bought this monitor in October 2020, but despite that, I'm led to believe that this is the older LG Ultrafine 5k model.)
I'm aware that even if I manage to get this all to work together, that I'm limited to 4k resolution at 60Hz. I don't mind that. I just want a larger monitor for ergonomical reasons, and all I have is this LG Ultrafine 5k. So I'm just searching for a way to just get video onto the monitor. (I don't care about sound, webcam, microphone, etc.)
If I indeed have the older LG Ultrafine 5k model, then that would mean that the only option for video/audio in to the monitor must be via Thunderbolt 3.
Meanwhile, video out of the Microsoft Surface is over USB-C.
I'm happy to buy a Surface Dock 2 or whatever other active adapter I might need to get video into the Ultrafine 5k. And as far as I can tell, if I grab one of these docks (or other kind of active adapter), I can get HDMI out of the dock, and I can get an adapter to go HDMI -> Thunderbolt 3 on Amazon.
But before I go grab random adapters, I was just wondering... Is this insane? Or is there some more straightforward way to just get the video, even at reduced resolution, onto the LG Ultrafine 5k?
The good news is that motherboard can have a Thunderbolt add-in card used with it. I’m not sure which ones are compatible with that MB but according to its manual, it does support adding one.The mother board is a MSI Z690 Carbon with Wifi that does have a type C port; however, it does not appear that the port supports monitors (seems to be a general data port).
I had the same LG, tried many differing solutions, and got nowhere. I’m pretty sure that older model is simply a No.I too have the old LG display (27MD5KA-B) and cannot seem to get any picture or display on my windows desktop. I have tried the Wacom adapter and a bidirectional USB-C to Display port. Neither of these rendered a picture. All I want is a picture, I don’t mind not having access to any other abilities the monitor has.
Is there any way at all for this older display to work on a windows desktop that does not have a thunderbolt port? The mother board is a MSI Z690 Carbon with Wifi that does have a type C port; however, it does not appear that the port supports monitors (seems to be a general data port).
Any information or help would be greatly appreciated!
Okay, I thought so but thought I’d see if there was anyone who managed to get it to work. Thank you very much for replying!I had the same LG, tried many differing solutions, and got nowhere. I’m pretty sure that older model is simply a No.
HBR2 x4 connection allows 720MHz 8bpc and 576MHz 10bpc.Hi I'm new here, planning to get an UltraFine 4k, not sure whether 22 or 24 in. since they're similar price, and connect to my Windows PC with iGPU. Thanks to DeanL and joevt who has been actively response to this thread for such a long time.
To a conclusion, I have the two most direct way to hook up this monitor to a Windows PC:
1. Get a Alogic DP to USB-C cable that support 4k at 60Hz and plug from the PC directly to the monitor. This has been proved working for many people so no problem with displaying output, except only output and no other USB ports built-in to the monitor would work or the audio works.
My only question is that according to Alogic, the cable support up to 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz, but some users here has been using it on the UltraFine 21.7 in. which is 4096 x 2304 at 60Hz flawlessly, wonder how?!
Wacom Link Plus or Belkin Charge and Sync cable or Sunix UPD2018 or Thunderbolt add-in card.2. Connect via Wacom Link Plus Adapter which have 4 connection between the PC and the monitor, according to DeanL (the starter of this), pluging USB A from PC to microUSB in Wacom adapter will give it audio output, can someone please confirm that this works?!
I'm looking for the full experience (with audio) so any other ways that makes the audio work will be appreciated, thank you!!!
So you're suggesting that DisplayPort 1.2 can still display 4096 x 2304 at 60Hz but only at 8 bpc instead of 10 bpc? I'm sure I can't tell different between 8 and 10. Still debating whether to get a 21.5 or 23.7 in. displayHBR2 x4 connection allows 720MHz 8bpc and 576MHz 10bpc.
3840x2160 60Hz is usually 522MHz or 533MHz or similar.
4096x2304 60Hz is at least 593MHz.
HDMI 2.0 is 594MHz.
So, depending on the timing, you may be limited to 8bpc instead of 10bpc.
Wacom Link Plus or Belkin Charge and Sync cable or Sunix UPD2018 or Thunderbolt add-in card.

Correct.So you're suggesting that DisplayPort 1.2 can still display 4096 x 2304 at 60Hz but only at 8 bpc instead of 10 bpc? […]
USB-A to the PC that will be controlling the display. So I dig deeper and see that instead of a DP 1.2 to USB-C which doesn't include audio, I can get another solution for audio is Belkin VR cable or Huawei VR2 cable which have Display port along with USB-A port. Since they have 2 variants: 1st one with 1 DP and 2 USB-A, 2nd with 1 DP and 1 USB-A, idk which one to get and where to plug the USB-A (To the PC?!)
I'll def try it out if I end up getting that cableUSB-A to the PC that will be controlling the display.
Belkin has two USB-A since the one USB-A solution of the Huawei might not have enough power? In this case, plug one to PC and the other to anything (PC or charger). If it's not clearly marked then you should label the connectors after discovering which one is for data.
I need to have it working with a Windows 10 Surface Laptop 4. The laptop only has USB-C connection through I do have a dongle which is USB-C to HDMI, Displayport, USB-C, USB-A connections.
Hi,
It’s definitely the 27MD5KL-B model and you’re right the included thunderbolt cable doesn’t work.
Any suggestions which will work please? Thanks
