You don't say whether your Surface 4 has Intel or AMD but either of them can display 5K 5120x2880 @ 60 Hz on this monitor, assuming it's really the LG 27MD5KL-B model. You just need a USB-C cable. I think the cable that comes with this is a Thunderbolt cable that likely doesn't work so you'll probably need to find one on Amazon.
Hi edanuff,

I have a thinkpad p14s amd gen 1. it has

Monitor Support Supports up to 4 independent displays (native display and 3 external monitors via HDMI® and USB-C®)
• HDMI supports up to 4096x2160@60Hz
• USB-C supports up to 5120x2880@60Hz, DP mode via USB-C to DP dongle

So I suppose it should work with 27MD5KL-B, at least on 4k@60Hz?

Thanks for the help.

The LG UltraFine 5K, even the newer model, requires Thunderbolt 3 “dual-link SST” input to do 5K at 60 Hz. It doesn’t do 5K at 60 Hz via USB-C.

Yes the UF 5k manual says with Type-C maximum is 4k@60hz. I’m fine with that.

The thing is, Apple store here no longer sells it so there is no free return if I buy and find it doesn’t work with p14s at all. As long as 4k@60hz works I’ll be happy.

Yes, you're correct, my bad. I'd forgotten that the DisplayPort support on this monitor never got beyond 4K.

Follow-up of my own query from a few pages back: I recently acquired a 27MD5KL, and successfully got a PS4 Pro to output at 4K 60Hz to it.

I used the following:
- GoFanco PRO-HDMI2DP (HDMI to DisplayPort active converter)
- CableCreation bidirectional DisplayPort to USB-C cable

A bit convoluted, but I can hereby confirm that it works. Video Output Information screen on PS4 reports 3840x2160 60Hz, RGB, HDCP 2.3. Picture looks great, obviously 4K is not native resolution so it will never be perfect, but the internal upscaler seems to be doing a good job.

Caveats:
- No HDMI audio, but I'm ok just using the controller headphone out anyway (also the 27MD5KL's speakers are absolutely terrible, like wow, c'mon LG, you could have done better for a monitor of that price range)
- Need to plug and unplug cables whenever I want to switch between the Mac and PS4, having only one input port is so lame... (and I assume TB3 switches don't exist, and if they do they're probably stupid expensive)

These all are direct connect right? Or do they require an expensive fancy dock.

You could try 5K39Hz from DisplayPort. See if you can create a custom timing.

I believe current HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort/USB-C adapters are limited to 4K width. You need a HDMI 2.1 to DisplayPort 1.4 adapter for 5K width.

@FUKUBIC said that club-3d told him that an adapter would be available this month.

Am I right in thinking that a 'Wacom Link Plus' will work at 4k on any computer connected to a '24MD4KL' as long as it has display port?

I have the above monitor and am 'Intel NUC 9 Pro Compute Element - NUC9V7QNB' which has Thunderbolt 3 connections. I tried connecting the monitor to the TB3 sockets but I got no display only sound. Should this have worked or am I missing something?

I have an RTX2070 card which has display port so was thinking the 'Wacom Link Plus' should work just fine.

The TB3 sockets are USB 3.2g2 compatible as well so maybe a straight USBC cable may work. The only thing I'm thinking with this approach would be that it would use the intel CPU graphics rather that the RTX2070 card.

Thanks for any advice given.

I think it should have worked. Did you try connecting a normal display to the Thunderbolt 3 ports?
The specs say the Thunderbolt ports supports graphics output.

USB-C cable should work. What cable did you try before with the Thunderbolt 3 ports?

It probably is the Intel CPU since the RTX2070 is not connected to DisplayPort inputs of Thunderbolt controller.

Thanks for the reply joevt :)

The cable I was using was a Thunderbolt 4 cable that I'm using currently between the monitor and my MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16"

  • Can you also try a standard USB-C cable just for kicks? The monitor should have come with one.
  • Are you sure the Intel GPU is enabled and working (does it show up in Device Manager)? As you're also using an RTX 2070 with the system, maybe it's been disabled? Are there any options in the UEFI setup that deal with the Intel GPU?

Should have been the 1st thing checked  and I work in IT (tried the switching off and on though 🤣). BIOS setting had Intel GPU set to automatic which meant that if it detects a dedicated GPU then it disables it. Set it to Enable and it appears in device manager :).

Only USBC cable I had was the Apple one I had from my Wife's MacBook Air but that did the same blank screen. Tried with the TB4 cable again and it fired right up :). I think the Apple cable may only be for charging and may not be fully compliant. Any recommendations for a know cable that works?

Downside as I expected is it's using the Intel 630 GPU but I'm just testing the water at the moment. I have a Dell S2721QS coming in the next few days but I love the form factor of the 24MD4KL.

Thanks everyone so far 👏

Know of any branded ones that are known to work?
Any USB-C 10 Gbps cable should work.

But if it's a Thunderbolt 3 port and supports two displays, then you want to use a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 cable to get 5K60 from the 24MD4KL. Does Windows Display Preferences -> Advanced Settings say you are outputting 5K or just 4K?

Update: I got confused. I was thinking about the 27MD5KL LG UltraFine 5K. The 24MD4KL is 4K.
A Thunderbolt connection is still preferable because it would allow USB 3.0 speed from the 4K display's USB ports.

My 'Wacom Link Plus' arrived today and works with the RTX2070 card :). It looks stunning but need to sort the brightness driver out.

Only issue I have is that I have no sound

Is there a specific driver I'm missing? I've tried windows update and looking for drivers under device manager but still no joy 😢
