I agree with others it is tough to justify the upgrade, but I treated myself and ordered it anyway. So I have to ask the question, what do you all think about the new Studio Display? Do you consider it's good enough to upgrade from an Ultrafine 5K?
Agree. For the extra $200 over the LG 5K, the Studio is a deal considering the features.but if I were in the market now not owning the LG it would be a no brainer.
how long ahve u had your 5k for? i would supplement personallySo everyone thinks it is worth upgrading from the LG Ultrafine? Other than the camera and speakers are there other noticeable differences?
Also I want both a VESA mount and a stand, is that possible to have both?
Probably approaching 18 months or so.how long ahve u had your 5k for? i would supplement personally
In any case, it'll be interesting to see how the Studio Display does 5K over Thunderbolt 3. Dual-link DisplayPort 1.2 (HBR2) SST like the UltraFine 5K must be an option since it's listed as compatible with Macs that don't have DisplayPort 1.4. I wonder if it also does it via a single DisplayPort 1.4 (HBR3+DSC) SST connection.insert joke about needing a new mac cuz base m1 cant do two 5k displays also
I don't know that I'd categorize it as a joke...insert joke about needing a new mac cuz base m1 cant do two 5k displays also
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is just selling out existing supplies. Assuming LG is supplying the panels for the Studio Display, it's better for both LG and Apple to focus on the Studio Display. To my surprise, Apple is still selling the Ultrafine on their Apple store, at the same price. I thought they would stop selling it in Apple stores, given the Studio Display is in the same price and specs range
I just checked eBay (US) and it looks like recent sales of the LG 5K are around $800, if that helps anybody with an upgrade decision either way.
That's interesting as I actually find the camera in the LG to be pretty good. Good lighting is a must though. I have a Dyson lamp that gives very even lighting from above my desk and it is perfect for using a webcam. This one hurts. I just got my LG in November so it's very new. I maintain that the picture quality is very good but the overall build quality and design just isn't as polished or as sexy as the Studio Display. The camera and speakers on the LG are mediocre, and the screen doesn't wake to full brightness, but it's otherwise a decent display. I know me too well to pretend I won't eventually get the Studio Display - just depends when I stop feeling guilty about upgrading. I'm happy that Apple finally released a display for those who don't want or need the XDR.
So I have to ask the question, what do you all think about the new Studio Display? Do you consider it's good enough to upgrade from an Ultrafine 5K?
Personally I wised that it had Promotion, but I think there are bandwidth limitations that prevent 5K 120 hz. Other than that, it looks pretty nice
LG Ultrafine can go to 500 nits if I recall, but I agree, it’s almost the same panel in a nicer enclosureIf you look at the specs Apple listed, it literally is an LG Ultrafine 5K, just packaged a little differently.
Looks nice, but not an upgrade.
- 27-inch 5K Retina display
- 14.7 million pixels
- 600 nits of brightness
- 1 billion colours
- P3 wide colour

No demand for 5K outside of the very small Mac user base, that's why. It's as simple as that. Why isn’t there any other monitor manufacturer (although I vaguely remember Dell had one for a short time) that offer this resolution?
These panels were used in other monitors, such as the Dell UP2715K (which I own), the Iiyama XB2779QQS and the Planar IX2790; the latter two even used panels originally destined for iMacs - they have the glass front and unpopulated hole for the webcam - but the panels are of inferior quality, so when buying either of these two monitors you need to be prepared for "surprises", such as many stuck pixels.Does anyone know if Apple has an exclusive arrangement with LG to make these 5K panels?
probably the exact same panel repackaged for appleIf you look at the specs Apple listed, it literally is an LG Ultrafine 5K, just packaged a little differently.
Looks nice, but not an upgrade.

Can’t say elsewhere, but I’ve noticed that Apple just removed the Ultrafine 5K from the canadian Apple store. The Ultrafine 4K is still there, that saidI wouldn't be surprised if Apple is just selling out existing supplies. Assuming LG is supplying the panels for the Studio Display, it's better for both LG and Apple to focus on the Studio Display.
