And the 27" iMac is gone, too. The only option to get your hands on one of those glorious 5K displays is the Studio Display now. What a bargain the 27" iMac was! The computer basically came for free.

Just shows how much profit Apple is making from these products. At least they are finally giving us what we've wanted for years with the Studio Display.

I am still keeping my UltraFine 5K monitors for a long time.

Interesting. If you want to pick one up note that they give corporate discounts of 10%. At minimum I’d ask for that discount. Maybe the educational discount which was 15% I believe.

Apple consistently earns 35-40% margins which is HUGE in the PC industry. That said, I think the actual margin on the Studio Display is similar to the 27” iMac. They are including an A13 processor vs. an Intel i5/i7. They just aren’t including an OS. And they upgraded the camera and speakers and redesigned the case.

Thinking of purchasing the 34” LG 34WK95U-W. Does this monitor suffer from the burn in issues as well as the wake from sleep issues?

Is there a better alternative to this monitor that can provide fairly high DPI in a similar size?

I was just reminded of another issue with the LG UltraFine 5k. It doesn't support HDCP! When I try to play any Apple purchased movies, I get the error message "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)". I missed this point when shopping for the LG and am shocked it isn't mentioned more frequently. At least for me, it's a complete deal breaker.

Presumably not an issue on the new Studio Display?

I don’t have any issues playing HDCP content on my Ultrafine. Maybe something else in your setup isn't compliant?

In one of the Studio Display reviews I read, LG said that they expect the 5K UltraFine displays to be back in stock in about a month. So it isn’t discontinued. It’s just that Apple isn’t selling it anymore.

Interesting... I wonder if they will drop the price. Seems like a tough sell at the current price compared to the new Studio Display. Might be an attractive option for folks if they dropped it down to $800 or so.

Given the underwhelming reviews for the Studio Display, they may not have much incentive to drop the price.
Includes a stand, decent webcam, power cable can be removed, VESA mount included and can be changed… It’s pretty good even at that price point for almost exactly the same panel

The stand is a bit wobbly, but yes, it is included, along with the VESA mount. It is a good panel, and it has tight macOS integration. Obviously, Apple isn’t selling it directly anymore, but it will be interesting to see how many Apple resellers continue to stock it.

Both LG UltraFine 5K and Apple Studio Display are amazing displays. Reviewers complaining about HDR makes me roll my eyes. Why does anyone using a computer monitor need HDR? I have HDR on my LG OLED TV and I actually prefer SDR.

I am glad they did not use mini-LED or OLED as they both have issues: backlighting controlled with PWM is my main concern with those other technologies.

I owned that monitor briefly in my quest to find a high ppi alternative to the LG 5K. For me, the brightness wasn't high enough at around 400 nits for a bright room, and the ppi wasn't high enough for me. It is the only option of its type though, if you want something ultrawide that is. Colour was very good on it. It did have the temporary image retention problem, yes. It wasn't a small issue LOL.

I ended up selling it and buying a used LG 5K and really enjoyed having that. Almost no issues overall, though it was the "second gen" with certain updated components. Manufactured in 2019.

There's not a lot of options for high ppi monitors. More or less, just 3.

Hi guys.
Unfortunately, my monitor (LG 27MD5KA-B.AEKA) doesn't turn on since yesterday.
I always used the original power plug and thunderbolt cable. But it doesn't work.
If I connect my MacBook m1 to another port, I can recharge my laptop.
But if I connect to the main thunderbolt port, my monitor doesn't show any image and does not recharge my laptop.
I tried to connect using another thunderbolt cable, doesn't work.
I tried to connect in another MacBook intel and a Dell XPS, and it doesn't work.

I can't find any LG support here in Ireland.
Is my monitor condemned?

Did anyone ever come up with a fix to the M1 brightness issue?
  • When waking up from sleeping, the monitor starts with maximum brightness. But one press on the brightness button on the keyboard helps.
I just upgraded from a Intel MacBook Pro to the M1 MacBook Air and I am seeing this. It's not a big deal, but it shouldn't be happening.

Yep happens all the time for me with my M1 Max MacBook Pro. It’s not even specifically sleep-related since I have that laptop set not to sleep but to just turn off the display after 15 mins. Still happens.

Still doing this for me on a MBP with M1 Pro, and first gen LG5K. Monitor brightness works just fine when using other monitors (where brightness controls are in the monitor), it's just the LG5K that exhibits this problem.
