Update - I plugged the Ultrafine 5K into a 2021 M1 MBP and (while a lovely picture) the camera, speakers, and mic still do not work and do not show up in System Settings/preferences. I also tried using a TB 4 cable (instead of the TB 3 cable the monitor came with) to connect both my 2019 MBP and the 2021 MBP to the monitor and still no camera/mic/speaker. So, I'm suspecting there is a hardware problem with the monitor. Any thoughts appreciated...

Does anybody have "update files" for the UltraFine 5K newer than version 3.04? I've read about versions as new as 3.18, but LG Screen Manager still says 3.04 is the newest. Pretty frustrated, any help is appreciated!

Where have you read that? I've not heard that. Why would 1.18 be a newer version than 3.04?

Which model do you have? 27MD5KA-B or 27MD5KL-B?

Apologies for not reading through the previous 110 pages, but has anyone with dual identical LG5k monitors solved an issue that I have with the speakers? It doesn't help that they have the same name in all the drop downs.... however... Every time I restart my Mac Studio, the speaker output and microphone input seem to be randomly assigned between the two monitors - I'd really like them to stay on the monitor that's immediately in front of me. (My first teams call of the day is always a challenge....) is there any way to fix it? Thanks so much if anyone can help. The cameras are also a bit odd, but i use an external one now.

Yay - with the last OS update my display opens from sleep at the brightness at which I have set it. Previously it was almost always opening much brighter. My first world problem solved!

Strange, mine still reverts to 50% after resuming from sleep.

Very strange indeed. Perhaps this is some random thing rather than a bug that was fixed. I am running it with an M1 Mac mini which could be relevant.

Yup, I tried it with the original TB3 cable, the Apple one and a TB3 Cable from Caldigit. Same issue with every cable, sadly.

Are you 100% sure on this? I assumed the plate would help distribute the sheer weight.
I am not sure I agree that you don't need that plate to VESA mount this monitor. I think you do need it. Either way, it will look way better with it. I have two VESA mounted to arms. Looks fantastic!

I'm between getting the LG 5K or a 27" 4K monitor...
I'd like to use both side-by-side, hence my question as to what second monitor (27" 4K) would you guys recommend to work alongside the LG 27MD5KL?

I've shortlisted two so far, the ASUS ProArt PA279CV and the LG 27UP850-W as seemingly decent options. Does anyone here work with one of these alongside their LG UltraFine 5K? Or maybe you can recommend a hidden gem I've overlooked?

amazed so many of us still here lol. Id like to try the XDR if it ever gets down to $3k or less

betman if youre going side by side id match them personally cuz of my ocd

I just need a 27" 4K screen to put next to the LG Ultrafine 5K as most of the time I will be using it as a tv to show live broadcasts while I work on the 5K screen. :)

But I would like for the 4K second monitor to be a good one for times when it will be used as a side-by-side screen.

I'm using an LG 27UN850-W next to my LG 5k that I picked up a couple of years ago - not sure how it compares with the 27UP850 but very happy with it. Of course, it is not as nice as the 5k but still very good.

LG 27UN850-W is basically a year older than the "UP version, and apart from being able to provide more juice from the USB-C power supply I think they're more or less the same.

Does the LG 27MD5KL really use about 140 watts compared to the LG 27UN850-W using just 44 watts?

Maybe 140 watts = 44 watts + 90 for charging external device? i am not sure what should i do, giving the ultrafine a try or not. i am an always on guy, my full hd screen only use 18 watts.

I still have this issue regularly with my M1 Mac Mini. No updates have resolved this issue of the screen waking at less than my preferred (100%) brightness from sleep every time. I set up a Better Touch Tool automation to wait 2 seconds after waking and then crank the brightness back to 100%. It works, but is annoying as I’m usually ready to jump right in to typing away, but the computer is effectively in limbo during those 2 seconds.

Hi,
has anyone seen any of this behaviour before?
Yes.

I have, unfortunately, seen this multiple times. The display is dying. The pads on the USB-C connector are starting to separate. The issue is intermittent (and very odd) at first, but eventually it won't turn on at all anymore. It's usually better after the display has been powered off for a while. As the connector goes through thermal cycles the issues gets worse and worse. The only solution is to try and have someone repair it by desoldering and resoldering the connector. It is a delicate operation and the odds of it working are about 50/50. I have had two fail like this and neither were recoverable. This video actually explains the issue:

All Ultrafine 5Ks will fail in this way given enough use and enough time. Some earlier than others. The best way I've found to extend life is NEVER let the display charge a device. Always power your device separately. Powering the device over USB-C causes excessive heat on the connector. USB-PD should really be disabled on these displays all together.

Great info and caution on excessive plugging into the TB input port and using it for power delivery, thanks for posting.
The camera, mic, and speakers on my 2020 vintage 27MD5KLB-B have failed but the display remains excellent. Perhaps my TB port lasted because I've always used the LG 5K with a CalDigit TB3+ dock, which is what I use for power delivery. Nevertheless, I used this post to justify making the LG 5K my second monitor and getting a Studio Display for my primary monitor. (The CalDigit will remain plugged into the LG 5K and the LG 4K I was using as my second screen is getting a new home...)

um anyone else having issues with the monitor not waking after the recent 13.4 update?

Have to either manually restart or unplug tb cable the ultrafine to show up after sleep

No issues here. I have an M1 MacBook Air (2020) as well. I use a Thunderbolt 4 cable.
