CES is wrapping up. Plenty of new options coming out. This one is a dud. I'm going to bargain my pair away for a new 34" as soon as those are available.

by no means a dud... some problems but to me toasts been mostly High Sierra or Final cut pro...

I love mine and couldn't think of using any other monitors for the length of this laptops life....

But we shouldn't have problems from a monitor. Critically, no machine should have to be hard rebooted just by plugging in a monitor! That's akin to tuning to the wrong radio station in your car necessitating you to pull over and turn off your car and turn it back on. A "minor" inconvenience, but no reason for it at all.

I grabbed a refurb unit (supposedly with just the radiation shielding properly set in place), I'll post some comments once I get to test it out. Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Just to confirm, there is absolutely no way to connect an HDMI device to my LG ultrafine 5k? No dongles or anything would work ? Are capture cards and remote play my only options?

Hey all,

long time reader, first time poster!

I purchased a 5k UltraFine last week, and when it arrived it had some pretty bad light leak so I returned it. I purchased another, and today I received it, and same deal. Its not super apparent when there's a picture on screen, and not even that bad in some pro-apps like resolve, Lightroom, or premiere. But its super apparent when im watching any sort of video in full screen.

should I try again? Return and repurchase and hope third time's a charm?
Are all units suffering from light leak, or are there good quality units out there?

FWIW my original unit came with a box that had the opening in the middle, and this time I got a box that had openings on each side, none of which shows model "A-B". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If your unit supports Thunderbolt then its definitely possible.

Ive seen people built PC that has thunderbolt support on the motherboard that uses it with a LG ultrafine display.

That 34-inch monitor is not true 5K. It is an extended 4K monitor. Compare the pixels per inch.

The LG UltraFine 5K is the only true 5K resolution monitor that I am aware of that is currently being manufactured. I didn't even see any 5K monitors at CES this year.

Which is fine by me. I wasn't sold on 5K. I wanted a single cable solution for my MBP. Plug in one cable and get a monitor with a power/camera/mic/usb feed. It was about the convenience and ease of use. Obviously having to reboot after every plug in of the 5Ks makes that "ease" a "bit" more difficult.

I am aware of that but my question is with an HDMI output like a ps4 pro. what ways can I get that on the lg display? So far my options are
very expensive 4k graphics card
Or
crappy remote play

No, there is no way. I did not see any Active HDMI to thunderbolt dongle that can do output from HDMI and input to LG5k.

After a a couple days of using mine, I love this monitor so far. Connection works flawlessly, pretty much exactly what I wanted.

Are the problems or issues mostly happening when used with the Macbook or also pretty much with the iMac? Is there actually a technical difference at connecting the LG Ultrafine to the iMac or the Macbook?

For the iMac it would be just a second display whereas a lot of issues seem to stem from MacBooks' clamshell mode and our desire to use the Ultrafines as primary displays. I would guess our issues are related to the MacBook's inability to properly wake up or their tendency to crash in clamshell mode. Please let us know about your experience with the iMac if you buy an Ultrafine display for it (I wouldn't see any reason why you would, though).

Well, I have been using two 30 inch Dell displays with my former Windows computer and therefore one display is just not enough for me. Especially if you edit photos and wish to compare them next to each other. Other than that I often times have to switch between tabs within chrome and it's so much easier to just view those tabs right away.

Honestly, I would be very surprised if there is anyone comfortable without an extra display, who uses his iMac for work purposes mainly.

I actually think that a very strong MacBook Pro + 34 inch or so curved 5k Monitor would be the optimal setup for me. But right now obviously there is no 34 inch 5k monitor and the iMac seemed the better deal.

Hey, I was using Two 5K monitors for a year with my Macbook Pro 15 (radeon 4gb) and yesterday got a new iMac Pro. I was migrating my data and downloading dropbox files so I fell asleep with everything turned on.

So I woke up and unfortunately I couldn't get my computer wake up as well... After hard restart wireless mouse was working but I couldn't CLICK on anything on my login screen... The issue is caused by one of my LG monitors.

I tried everything, changing cables, different computers, even moved it to different room. It is charging my macbook but screen is black and I can't click anything (just move my mouse).

New, 702 version, not sure about firmware. I can't update it. Any ideas?

I'd do the all migration stuff first. Then setup the two 5K displays into the iMac Pro.

If still buggy, unplug one of the 5K's, open LG's screen mgr app, and see if it offers a software update (you can't get updates with more than one 5K display plugged into one mac).

Once I connect that monitor, my macbook freeze. I can move mouse, but can't click, keyboard doesn't work, touch bar doesn't work. Everything is fine with my 2nd one.

I bought iMac Pro only because my Macbook Pro screen got bad pixels (horizontal line) and now another screen is broken :(

I tried to connect it using different methods and sometimes I see something like this:

Contact AppleDontCare to notify them of the issue. Also contact LG, and complain. Tell us what they both had to say.

The iMac Pro should work with two additional 5K's without any problem whatsoever. It's very much more powerful than any MBP which can handle two 5K's.

Are there any news for upcoming 5k monitors this year? Or is LG actually bringing in new 27 inch models? I was about to buy the 5k from ebay, a used one, but even that model went to 950 EUR, which is ridiculous.

For about 850€ you will be able to buy the 5k screen from ilyama
https://iiyama.com/de_de/produkte/prolite-xb2779qqs-s1/

Wow, I didn't even know that company. At first I thought I will skip it as I figured it must be some low quality manufacturer, but then read a few reviews on amazon about other monitors from iiyama and they seem to do just fine.

Brightness is supposed to be even better than what the Dell 5k has. As I am looking to add the monitor to my iMac 5k, the missing USB-C is not really an issue right? Even though I would really like to have the feature of the LG 5k, which will auto turn off whenever the iMac/Mac goes into sleep mode.

I will order it along with Spyder 5 and let you guys know how well it performs once it arrived.

I am considering getting the LG 5k Ultrafine display and wanted to see if some of the past issues have been resolved:

• Does the volume still jump from 1 to 10, or does it go up incrementally?
• Are there any issues with the display waking after sleep?
• Does the ambient light sensor work now?

• Any other issues current owners are still experiencing?
