What is the consensus on image retention?

I have seen reports of over time image retention becoming a problem. The older the panel becomes the more prone.

When it is new, I have read, It will not show retention. So this seems as if it could be a really ugly experience to run into down the road when your warranty is expired.

Are these old reports, have the panels been changed since..or is this still a valid issue?

This is my issue. I purchased the 5K in Jan of 2017 and didn't have image retention. Now I do, and it's quite bad.

I just reached out to LG to ask if they would repair it, even though it's out of warranty.

@Saeloe i have reported this to Apple and they have escalated it to the top. Someone will be looking at the default Realtek driver and will be contacting Realtek on their partially working new driver.

What version of macOS are you running? I bought new MacBook Pro 15" 2018 and tested the Belkin adapter through LG Ultrafine 5K and directly connected to the laptop, didn't have to install Realtek drivers because newest Mojave 10.14.1 has newer driver that what is available from Realtek site and this new driver gives full speed and everything works flawlessly.

That's strange. I have a 2016 MBP 15" and a fairly early LG 5K. After reading your post, I uninstalled the Realtek drivers. After rebooting, performance of the adapter connected to the 5K was far from full speed (only about 150Mb/sec). I reinstalled the Realtek drivers and the speed is back where I expected (930Mb/second).

I have to retest this with the new MBP 15" 2018.

I just got a new 2018 MBP (running Mojave) and LG UltraFine 5K. I get very intermittent sleep/wake problems. About once every day or two the Mac wakes up but the LG display stays dark. Unplugging and replugging the LG's Thunderbolt cable wakes it up. The LG display has the latest firmware.

I think that checking "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" might keep the problem from happening, but it happens so infrequently I am not sure.

I understand this problem was very common when the display was first introduced but less common now. Is anyone else here seeing it happen? Are there any solutions?

Thanks for the help!

I also get the same intermittent non-response when the computer is at sleep ion clamshell mode. The computer wakes up but the LG 5k is black. I need to unplug/plug the USBc cable. Annoying!

I know I am probably REALLY late to the party on this one, but I discovered today (with my UF 4k setup but obviously it would work with the UF 5k as well) that if you eject a drive but leave it plugged into the display, unplug the display and plug it back in that the drives will mount again. I had no idea this would actually work! I feel like the USB-C ports just became that much more useful.

Don't feel bad. . . occasionally one of my UF 4Ks does the exact same thing. In fact, I feel like this has always been the case.

Thinking about getting one of these 5Ks. Which revisions are you guys seeing image retention issues with?

Found a price I was willing to spend on a preowned 5K. However, it doesn't come with the stand but just the VESA mount plate. I'm contacting LG to determine if I can purchase the original stand from them and am searching online. I'm aware that I can still use a third-party VESA compatible stand. Anyone have suggestions for finding just the OEM stand or similar third-party stand? Perhaps, this monitor mounting for the stand is interchangeable and/or the stand is used on other 27" LG models. Any tips are appreciated.

BTW. If anyone with this monitor can retrieve part number from the stand, then this would be awesome. Thanks so much.

Any VESA 100x100 stand would suffice. The included stand sucks anyway (doesn’t turn left/right).

Yep. I had checked the dimensions and specifications to ensure that it was VESA compatible. Thanks for that tidbit and I've heard a few others that didn't care for the stand because of "wobble". I am looking for more incite as to if anyone is using or had suggestions for third-party that was weighted well and didn't clash with the aesthetics. I preferred the OEM just for simple resell value later on but if it's not cost effective because the price is going to be $100+, then forget the OEM stand. I'd wager a budget range of $40-80. I was curious as to if it was the same stand with other 27" LG monitors but I'm coming to the conclusion it is not. Perhaps, it's the same as the Ultrafine 4K. Really not looking for the cheapest solution either. Again, I appreciate your reply though.

BTW. Do you still own your 2 x 5K? If so, then I'd be willing to purchase them on that 2-for-1 deal.

Yeah, still got them, but will keep them around. They finally got their act together and the connection issues are all gone (took only a couple years).

If you've kept the same hardware since acquiring them, then I would imagine it was software related. Do you know what the original monitor firmware may have been and if it has been updated? Have the issues decreased with updating your OS to newer versions and are you currently using 10.14.1? I'd just be using it for VMs, building/compiling in Xcode, general/leisure use, then I would believe the monitor is fine. Not planning on anything dealing with raw photo or video editing, high FPS games, etc.

The fix was absolutely related to macOS updates. I have the latest version of driver for the LG monitors (which really only addressed the dramatic audio differnce at low volumes). The other primary issue most have seen (hung/locked/blank internal display when plugging in/out the 5Ks) was fixed with OS updates. Since Mojave I’ve had zero issues (currently running 10.14.1). I use my setup for running code as well (zero gaming and only basic photo/video).

I just received an email from LG support with the part number for the stand. Whether this is the only one, I can't say for certain since I've come across four variants in part numbers for the UltraFine 5K. The part number for the base/stand assembly they provided is AAN75808702. Also, LG support recommended Encompass for the parts supplier. However, after looking at the price on their website and researching other sources, I've come to an approximate cost of $160-200 for the base/stand. Umm...no way in **** I'm paying that much for this stand when there are many nicer and better quality products. Looks like I'm going the third-party route for a VESA 100x100 compatible monitor. Anyone have suggestions for a third-party stand they're using or considered?

Update: This LG stand for the 5K is listed as a "TV Stand" from LG's Canadian parts supply site. I'm curious as to if it's used in other lower cost televisions which have the same compatible interface. But, most likely not.

Amazon Basics has one for $37 that looks like it would do the trick for you. I have not used it myself, but the reviews look pretty good.

Something close to this style would be nice.

This one is an immediate buy...but, oh wait. What's with the stupid Chinese companies needing to screw up the aesthetics with their ugly logos having to be visible on the product!? Every **** company finds a need to take it and embellish the god-awful translation from something in their own language. I think I'd just rather see their own non-translated logo in their own language as opposed to some translated "Techno-Babble" name. Clue to marketing department: If your logo looks like garbled Latin characters, let's just hide it on an discreet label that's not visible in normal use.

I saw a 5K Ultrafine connected to a MacPro at an Apple Store and I tried adjusting the resolution and it would not beyond 1800ish vertical. All resolutions looked blurry.
At a store a couple weeks ago and the display was showing 2880 so full 5K (@ 30 bit color). The 2013 Mac Pro isn't supposed to be able to support this over the TB2 connection. I mentioned to the Apple geek and he had no idea.

Anyone know what is going on or have one hooked up to a nMP? Next question is would the nMP drive 2 or even 3 of these.

Anyone know if the Ultrafine 4K and 5K stand/base assembly are the same? From different images that I've tried to compare, then they have matching physical dimensions. Perhaps, the part numbers are the same. I've asked LG support, as well.

Update: Spoke with LG Support and the part number for the 5k base/stand assembly is AAN75808702. The part number for the 4k base/stand assembly is AAN75808701. However, they CS couldn't confirm if they were the same physical dimensions for interchangeability. I'll keep searching. Anyone that has both wouldn't mind doing a swap would be great for reference. Thanks.

Perhaps, I can't find them but there don't seem to be many side by side comparisons between the two for dimensional comparisons. But, after finally perusing multiple sites, then it looks like the stand which attaches to the monitors may be the same but the base is a larger square area for the 5k over the 4k.

If I could get the dimensions of the VESA design cover which comes with both monitors, then this would solve my problem.
Would anyone that has the 4k or 5k measure the dimensions of the rectangular VESA design cover and post them here?

Pulled the trigger on a base/stand assembly which was advertised for the 4k. I'll know once it arrives. However, it would still be cool to get the dimensions for the design cover because it would help out any others in the future looking for the same specifications. LG Customer Service are either limited in having such simple knowledge of the parts or don't want to give them out. The same goes for their "recommended" parts supplier Encompass. They couldn't tell me the dimensions of the part or if the parts were suitable replacements for the other.

I got a Mac Mini (2018) i5, 8GB/256GB with the Ultrafine 5K.

I too have this issue where the screen stays black after pressing all keys and trying to turn it back on. Have even connected to the MM via TeamViewer and I can see it's working fine, but display won't turn on.

I've enabled the setting to prevent it from going to Sleep, and it reduced the frequency of this occurence, but it still seems to happen every few days.

Planning on returning the entire setup while within return period, since I can't find any evidence to say that going for a 16GB or even 32GB RAM on the MM'18 would fix this issue. Quite disappointing as there are no other good monitors with a built-in webcam like this one.

I wouldn't use over 4k with your MM i5 with 8GB and IG. Just my opinion though, regardless of what the manufacturer states for supported hardware.

I have the exact same issue with a brand new MBP2018 - I am still in the return period and thinking of returning.

But this simply CANNOT be true: LG ultrafine is designed to work with mac. It is the most basic issue to be able to wake up from hibernate. Is there really no solution???

Hi guys,

I upgraded to the 15” i9, Vega 20 from a 2016 maxed out.

I’ve never been happy with the performance of the the laptop when connected to the LG 5K. It was choppy and the fans were always spinning like crazy even in idle.

I can say that finally I edit and work at the same speed in 5K with no problem with the new Vega 20. Worth the upgrade if working in such high resolutions. And it’s silent! The fans stay at the minimum browsing and working with light programs.

I've posted in another thread about this issue but had tried the link given in this one for downloading the firmware. LG Screen Manager App 2.20 is accessing broken or closed server links for firmware. Instead of replying to the user that an update is available and failed to download or install, then the app was programmed to just always report your current version is up to date. I'm currently on version 3.01 and the link for 3.04 in the thread replies with "NotAllowedPage" which is what the app executable receives in the background update from the verbose output in terminal. Here's the previously provided broken/closed link now.

Did anyone save this *.zip file and could provide it to me?
