Its a little bit odd that there are so many 5K owners on here highlighting the misaligned pixel issue and hardly any pages on the official Apple Support Community thread.

Only 104 people have clicked the 'I have this question too' button over there. Hopefully URL's are allowed here:

On that note, there are several posts over there confirming that the USB-C cable supplied with version 2 of the monitor at least allows 4K resolution and does not incur misaligned pixel issue. Further to that, 5K resolution is possible using a Thunderbolt Hub (such as OWC) and this also resolves the issue.

Thank you for pointing out this ("official") thread -- I went over there and added a +1 as well. It's a mystery to me how these bugs don't get solved. The QA culture at Apple is... weird, to say the least. And that's been my experience both as a user of their products and as someone who knows people who work there.

I have the version 2 of the monitor and using the supplied cable (which is actually a thunderbolt cable) I have the misaligned pixel issue.

Hello,

I have the following setup: Mac Mini M1 (2020) Base Configuration, LG Ultrafine 5K (12/2020 Batch).
My issues when I set the display to sleep and wake it up again:
  • The brightness is not correct very often. The display is set brighter than it should be.
  • A pixel shift in the center of the screen occurs.

After reading this thread I have the following questions which I hope somebody can answer because I don't have the equipment at home for testing:
  • Has anyone tried the "Apple Thunderbolt 3 Pro Cable" or any other than the original LG one?
  • Does a Thunderbolt 3 Dock resolve any of the issues? Maybe the CalDigit TS3 Plus or the CalDigit Element Hub?

I would be very thankful if somebody could test this.

Hi all,

I just got the LG UltraFine 5k which I'm connecting to a 16" 2020 MBP. Everything works and looks great except that the webcam light is always on. It flashes when I use an application that is accessing it (e.g., Zoom), but when I end the use of the webcam the light continue to stay solid.

I also connected a windows based laptop and my iPad Pro and the same thing happens.

Apple and LG support have not been helpful.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

Thanks!

For clarity - I think the 'M1' in the Apple Forum thread relates to 'Mac mini M1' - not version 1 of the monitor. I also have the V2 of the LG5K and have the issue. But the advice in the Apple Forum does resolve it for me.

@ImageAmos: Which advice resolves it? Using the USB-C cable? Do you get full 5k resolution with it? Also, do you have version 1 or version 2 of the monitor?

using an M1 Mac (MacBook Pro and mini) same issue with the misaligned pixel issues, unplugging the cable and replugging often works or Shift Control Eject key to sleep the display and waking also sometimes works

Has anyone else tried single DisplayPort connection to LG UltraFine 5K?

For 27MD5KA, you can use a Thunderbolt 2 connection or USB-C 10 Gbps cable to force 20 Gbps Thunderbolt mode which should allow only a single HBR2 DisplayPort signal.

For 27MD5KL, a USB-C connection (non-Thunderbolt) should force USB-C connection mode (or Thunderbolt 20 Gbps mode).

In either case, a refresh rate lake 30Hz may be necessary. One person did 39Hz with the 27MD5KL so I am curious about the 27MD5KA (but would like to see confirmation of either case). Use SwitchResX to create the timing. Use AGDCDiagnose to verify the connection and resolution and pixel depth.

I see that the LG Screen Manager app for Mac has FINALLY been updated! With this and the release of MacOS 11.4 today does it mean that the Ultrafine display is now working 100% with M1 Macs?!?!?!? Please let us know, thanks!

Still loses brightness setting after sleep.

Yes! I saw this as well, but it doesn't look like there's a corresponding firmware update for the monitor itself. Is this correct? I don't see why they'd update the app if they're not trying to get a lot of people to upgrade to a new firmware version.

Sadly I can report that the screen/panel alignment issue persists in 11.4 (Mac mini M1 & Ultrafine 5K Mk II)

I’ve been stuck getting 60W charge for my MBP 16” via the 5K.

I was using a newer Apple thunderbolt cable and decided to switch back to the original cable that came with the display and low and behold I’m back at 94W charging.

I have the Apple Thunderbolt cable (rated at 100W), so why is it stuck charging at 60W?

Bit the bullet last week and called Apple Support over the misaligned pixel issue.

Two hours on the phone, usual deal NVRAM/PRAM resets, swap cables, try this setting etc etc. The tech remote'd to my MAC and agreed the issue, I also had to upload images shot of the monitor from my iPhone. Eventually passed to Post Sales who pulled the shutter down immediately: LG's problem not ours.

She apologised for disappointing me but said at the end of the day its only this monitor that's encountering this issue and my warranty was with LG. Went as far as to say I should have been more brutal in my decision making during the 14 day return period(!) ... don't worry Apple, that will come back to haunt you I can assure you.

As I've previously stated on this thread, the LG U5K is a brilliant monitor. But in 2021, an ongoing bug associated with a monitor's most rudimentary function is unacceptable. My take home? ... I will never buy a 3rd party product from the Apple Store again. The Apple Support people I spoke to were very well briefed on UK Consumer Law to the point of being condescending.

Even if this problem is resolved, its left a very sour taste in my mouth regards Apple Retail and LG.

The misaligned pixel problem - does it occur with any Intel Macs? If it only occurs with M1 Macs then it's an Apple problem. Specifically, their M1 GPU or driver is broken.

I randomly have the misaligned pixel on my Intel Mac Mini, Intel MacBook Pro, and M1 MacBook Air.

Ok, then I guess the only way it can be an Apple problem is if the problem does not occur in a different OS (Windows/Linux) or an older OS (Catalina). The LG UltraFine 5K has been out awhile. When was the first occurrence of the misaligned pixel problem? I think it's been only after Big Sur was released? I don't have an LG UltraFine 5K but I did notice a couple times in Big Sur on a 4K display connected to my Mac mini 2018 that a column of pixels was doubled or missing (I forget the exact appearance of the problem - I think I wrote it down somewhere...).
