Ok, then I guess the only way it can be an Apple problem is if the problem does not occur in a different OS (Windows/Linux) or an older OS (Catalina). The LG UltraFine 5K has been out awhile. When was the first occurrence of the misaligned pixel problem? I think it's been only after Big Sur was released? I don't have an LG UltraFine 5K but I did notice a couple times in Big Sur on a 4K display connected to my Mac mini 2018 that a column of pixels was doubled or missing (I forget the exact appearance of the problem - I think I wrote it down somewhere...).
I had the problem on my Mac Pro 7.1 with Catalina as well but not on my Macbook Pro with Catalina.

Based on the shared feedback here, and some extra research I've done, I'm willing to bet this is a Thunderbolt issue. Specifically, Apple's driver for Intel's Thunderbolt hardware probably needs to be revisited and reworked.

Remember, driving these LG 5K displays is a very TB-dependent process. The LG 5K is a display that requires a ton of bandwidth for both the display and for being a high-throughput USB-C hub. This heavily implicates TB.

The TB controller is the common element in this issue. Intel and M1 Macs are completely different platforms, yet TB is common among them.

TB was developed jointly between Intel and Apple (codenamed "Light Peak"). To my understanding, Intel Macs use Intel-native TB controllers, and M1 Macs use Intel-derived Apple-built TB controllers. By "derived", I mean that Apple started from a jointly developed spec, and customized from that.

More specifically however, it appears that there are actually Intel-native TB retimers on M1 Mac PCBs (and of course Intel Mac PCBs). Something about Apple's firmware and these retimers, or the controllers, or something, is probably causing this issue. Thoughts?

Hello,

I`m planning to buy the LG 5K monitor, version 2 one and drive it with either a Radeon 6700/6800 depending on my budget.

Could someone with LG 5K monitor and a Mac Pro 2019 with a non-Apple MPX GPU post a screenshot of the Displays scaled menu?

Just want to confirm whether I can drive the 5K monitor at 2560 x 1440 HIDPI @60Hz without having to create a custom profile on SwitchRes. I am hearing conflicting information that it won`t be possible natively, appreciate if someone can advise on the HiDPI resolution from a non-Apple GPU on a Mac Pro driving the LG 5k monitor, thanks.

No, the LG UltraFine 5K cannot do 5K 60Hz with a non-Thunderbolt connection. You can try creating a 5K 39Hz custom timing, or you can put a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 add-in card between the GPU (connected with two DisplayPort cables) and the LG UltraFine 5K display.

Has anyone reported the pixel shifting issues with LG?

On the Apple Support Community thread, a user has just said that LG agreed to take his Ultrafine 5K in for repair because of this issue. It's been returned to him and the problem still persists.

Apple have their head in the sand here. As previously stated my take away from this is that I'll never buy an non-Apple product via their store again. As soon as the 14 day cooling off period expires you are someone else's problem.

  • Happy to co-develop with the LG
  • Have Phil Schiller recommend the product in a keynote
  • Have the Apple trademark on the box
  • Sell it in their store
But don't bother them if you find a problem, its apparently now 100% an LG product.

Ludicrous.

Same here - My monitor has been back to LG twice. They told me they have replaced everything but the case, yet the problem still happens about 50% of the times I startup.

Its happened on my intel MacBook, M1 Mac mini and M1 MacBook over the last 18 months.

I've tried 4 or 5 different thunderbolt cables as well, from premium expensive ones to cheap ones. They make no difference.

I definitely agree that the issue seems to be on the Apple side of things.

I would like to see more pictures of the pixel shift. Is it exactly in the middle of the display? If so, maybe Apple's drivers aren't syncing the output of the two 2560x2800 tiles correctly. One can imagine that if the outputs aren't within one scan line of each other, then a shift can occur.
Maybe this sync problem is why Apple can't do 8K60 on the dual tile Dell UP3218K or 4K144 on my dual tile XV273K.

Hi joevt,

There are some pictures dotted around the last 20 pages or so of this thread. Likewise if you jump over to Apple's official Support Forum for this topic:

... there are loads over there are well.

Two pictures I took.

That's too weird. I can't understand why it goes up one pixel then goes back down. Does it only happen at 5K timing? If you switch to 4K, it might go away. Maybe if you switch back to 5K then it might fix itself. You have to use SwitchResX to make sure the 4K and 5K aren't scaled timings.

Hello, I just got this monitor. Is it normal for it to deliver less than 94W when connected to a MacBook Air? I only get like 48W.

Hello community,

I have a problem with my LG 5k monitor. Brightness control, webcam and audio are not working anymore. I am using a Mac mini m1. What can I do now to solve the problem?

Thank you in advance!

I recently started having this problem. I have tried both my intel 2018 15 inch MPB and M1 MBP. with both I can't use the speakers, change brightness or use the webcam. It's like it doesn't recognize it... has anyone encountered this issue recently? it was working fine until recently

does anyone have a solution for this? I change the brightness, or use the webcam or speakers anymore. I have tried NVRAM and SMC reset but no difference. Tried a different thunderbolt cable as well.

Anyone know what to do? Never had this problem before (using 15 inch MBP from 2018)

Is the LG and it's internal devices appearing in the Thunderbolt, PCI, and USB tabs of the System Information.app? Do you have other Thunderbolt devices that work? Try connecting the display to a Thunderbolt device?

It recognizes under thunderbolt, USB and PCI (it shows that its connected to LG 5k) but doesn't show its camera and speakers... I connected it to iPad Pro to see if it makes a difference and no way to change brightness. I connected to M1 MBP and same problem... the camera, speakers and brightness control disappeared... Not sure how to force the display to reset as the lg screen manager doesn't seem to connect to display to reset it..

That being said, I haven't tried connecting through a thunderbolt device

If it shows in Thunderbolt, USB, and PCI then it should work. Post some before/after screenshots for each when the display is connected or not. Something is missing. Under USB, there should be a USB controller from the Thunderbolt controller of the display. The USB controller should have a hub. The hub should include USB devices for audio and camera.
Under PCI should be the USB controller from the Thunderbolt controller.
Under Thunderbolt should be the display connected at 40 Gbps x1.

Does anyone have this issue? I have a Mac Mini M1 with 16GB ram.

I was thinking of this monitor for my M1 Mini and last week it was available online in Australia, but now it is showing as 'Sold Out'. Does this mean it is just temporarily out of stock or are Apple getting rid of stock prior to releasing or recommending another 5K display?
Are there any other 5K monitors which are known to work well with M1 Mini?

It's OOS in Singapore for a long time as well. I lowkey suspect it's been discontinued with a replacement coming in mid term.

My 5K screens turns off multiple times a day. It is connected to my MacBook Pro with M1, 16gb. It's in every situation and complete random. The screen goes off, the MacBook screen stays on and after 4-7 seconds it is turning on again. The monitor goes completely offline, all my open windows will be moving to my MacBook screen.

It seems it will happen more during Zoom calls and when I'm using the internal webcam of the LG screen. Any idea how to fix this?

Move any USB 3 and Wi-Fi devices further away from the screen.

When I had my USB 3 hub about a foot away behind the screen, the screen would crap out at random times (which I think corresponded with high USB drive use). Worse still, the screen crapping out would unmount any USB devices, so my external drives were not happy.

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before (I only managed to read 30 or so pages of this thread!), but I'm seeing a weird scaling issue with my UltraFine 5K. My setup:
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)
  • CalDigit TS3 Plus
  • LG UltraFine 5K (connected to TB3 port on the CalDigit)
  • Rubbish ViewSonic 24" display, 1080x1920, connected to DisplayPort on CalDigit.
If the ViewSonic is turned off or disconnected, I get glorious super-sharp 5K (2560x1440 HiDPI) on the UltraFine 5K. If I turn the ViewSonic on, then the UltraFine 5K drops to 4K scaled up to 5K (as confirmed doubling clicking on the resolution in SwitchResX, which tells me the mode in which I'm running is 3840x2160 scaled up to 5120x2880, even though System Preferences maintains I'm running 2560x1440).

I'm using all-original cables - the CalDigit-supplied TB3 cable between MacBook Pro and TS3 Plus, and the LG-supplied TB3 cable between TS3 Plus and UltraFine 5K. Does anyone know of an explanation for this? Am I hitting some hard limit of one of the components, or can I configure my way out of this somehow? TIA!

Thunderbolt has two display streams (DisplayPort channel). The 5K monitor needs 2 to display 5K. With only one stream it displays 4K. The ViewSonic is taking the other stream.
