they wouldn't hold one for me yesterday so i missed out...funny thing was i read about all the post here about stores all over the east coast getting the MBA and i called my store and they said they didn't have any...then i called back five minutes later and spoke with another apple team member and they told me they had plenty but expect to sell out in a few hours...

I had originally said that there would be all the MBA's anybody would want available by the end of this week. Looks like the initial pent up demand will be filled within the next 48 hours or so...

It was fun scrambling around and commiserating over the past 5 days, I must say. Last Friday when rumors had it that the SoHo NYC store had stock, I sent my nephew who lives near there right over. He snagged me a 1.8 SSD, then nearly got molested leaving the store! Then Friday night I drove down to NY from CT in a wild rain storm to get my hands on it. Waiting until Saturday morning (when the sun was shining) would, of course, have been out of the question. Here we are just 4 days later and I can just walk in to my local Apple store and buy one like a normal human being, but where's the sport in that?

I am totally impressed with the MBA, based on my own experience as well the reports coming in. I know it's soon, but build quality appears to be very good and no significant problems have been reported so far. A couple of wobbly feet and excessive fan activity seem to be about it.

Enjoy your new MBA, and thanks to the forum moderators who have helped keep us all sane (or helped us deal with our insanity).

Don't expect to be able to rely on whatever anyone says over the phone.

Yesterday, my local Apple Store told people in this thread that they never had any despite the fact that I walked out with one not 30 minutes before :p

Lesson: You can't be lazy about it :D Apple isn't going to help you out until supplies are truly plentiful.

ok, in hawaii... driving for 20 minutes is way too far.... so if i don't know for sure if i'm going to get it- like if i can't be there before the shipment comes in, its too much a gamble.... then might as well not go all the way downtown and fight hours of traffic empty handed...

and yes, i know the phone can't be trusted... i read at least 23 posts about success stories with misinformation over the phone.

and dpgx, the manger thing only sometimes works... i too asked for a manger yesterday, no use :(

and terwal... if u do it that way you can consider yourself to be a rare mba owner.. haha... cuz it'll be hard to find a 1.8 w/o an SSD :)

Last night, I bought a 1.6/80 at Stonestown in San Francisco, also; I canceled my two orders on Amazon. The Mac Specialist indicated that I got the last 1.6/80 and that only 1.8/64 SSD was left.

Perseverance paid off.

Called the store in Delaware last night around 8pm. Still none in stock. Spoke with one of my guys at work this morning, who happened to be in the Apple store at 7:45pm. He was told that some had just arrived.

So, I drove over there (15 minutes away) at 10am. I was told that they only had 1.6 80GB versions in stock. No SSD. I explained nicely to the manager my frustrations with being told none were in stock when in fact they were. He was very nice about it.

Some of the guys in the office wanted to see the MBA, so we headed over there at lunch time. I again asked if they had any SSD models and was told no. I asked if they could check for me anyway. Again no.

I then decided to give up and just get the 80GB version. He went back and came back with, guess what? An SSD version!!!!!

Northridge, CA has both models

I got mine today at the Northridge CA store. They did tell me I got the last superdrive, but there were still a few MBA's left.

BOSTON AREA MBA Locations

If you're in the Boston area, Forego the Cambridge side galleria store if possible!! Not only are they inconsistent with their policy of "holding" machines i.e. holding for some and not for others ...it really depends on the manager on call, but they're kinda jerks about.

Last night, I went there to pick one up...they were sold out. One of the workers said that I "should have told them to hold one". She then went to ask her manager if I could "hold one" and he said no they dont do that. which is odd, considering two minutes ago she said people called in and they held them for people.

Very annoyed, on a whim, I called Providence Place Apple Store in RI. Not only did they have a boat load of them, they even HELD one for me til i got to RI! Granted a took a slight hit on the tax, but At least I got one and didnt have to deal with the madness at cambridge side.

Def head to Prov if you can. they WILL hold them for you! Ask for GUY, Roy, OR Eric! those guys are AWESOME! Tell em Kern sent you :)

For people in the Boston area you can also check out the Braintree South Shore Mall store. I was able to pick up an 80GB there last night and they were willing to hold it for me (even offered to hold it till the next day if need). I would just caution the info you get on the phone though because I called yesterday morning and was told they weren't getting any in until the middle of next week, then I call later in the afternoon and they all of sudden had some. Oh they had no SSDs by the way last night, only 80GB, might be a different today.

It got emails today from both the Clarendon and Tysons stores in Virginia that they had 1.8/SSDs that I could pick up.

Looks like inventory is catching up with demand at those stores.

for those in Hawaii, the UH Bookstore won't get them in until next week, but they said Apple would only send them 6-8 and there's a waiting list.

Stories like these really frustrate me cuz I want to know what the hell is going on! I've gone into the store here in Raleigh 3 times, called twice and always get the stock we don't have any in stock and I should order online. Maybe they're telling the truth or are they just trying to create the illusion of a shortage to stir up attention? (Probably not cuz it's the wrong kind of attention.)
