Why it doesn't work with a Mac is beyond me, the Mac doesn't get much love even support for HomePod is pretty poor on it.

I agree. Why not on a Mac. I guess it shows where Apple’s priorities are.

As long as the iPhone product family generates the lion's share of Apple's profits, Apple will rightfully focus on the iPhone. If they didn't, shareholders (particularly the big institutional ones like BlackRock, FMR, Vanguard, LeggMason, etc.) would justifiably take serious issue with Apple's prioritization.

It's likely that Spatial Audio will eventually come to Macs, presumably with a major operating system release. Big Sur? Maybe, maybe not. I don't recall reading any Big Sur beta testers saying that the beta macOS has Spatial Audio but Apple could always add it in the release version.

Remember that if you are using speakers with your Mac (either built-in or external), Spatial Audio is far less useful.

MacBooks already do support Dolby Atmos (spatial audio) playback over speakers, so my guess is at some point the OS will update macs to support AirPods Pro as well.

*Edited Mac to "MacBooks." Mac Pro, Mac mini, etc obviously don't utilize speaker systems appropriate for Dolby Atmos playback and as such aren't supported.

Sure wish it worked with the ATV4K. That would be a kiler application. Home theater surround sound without speakers! (And I agree Mac support should be a no brainer especially on the M1.)

---

Maybe the thread title should be revised to say "list of MOBILE apps that work on MOBILE devices...."?

In other words, AppleTV app on Mac hardware and on the AppleTV hardware doesn't work.

Nor do MOBILE apps when used on an M1 mac.

So it has to be Mobile apps on a (supported) Mobile device.

If this is true, it’s very odd indeed. Surelay spacial audio would be better on a TV

I wonder if, assuming the spatial audio of the headphones is indeed excellent, it's possible to use it with any non-Apple hardware; for example, the 2020 Samsung QLED TV's (for example, the q60t). I love my 65" q60t + Bose 35 combo (I do most movie watching using headphones to avoid the wife's nagging about the volume, LOL); it'd be great to have real spatial audio support without having to use any additional Apple hardware. (The Samsung QLED 2020 TV's have excellent media playback support; they have absolutely no problems with 4k h265 HDR stuff on external USB's etc.)

It doesn’t even work with the Apple TV 4K, so unlikely it would go to third party devices.

Which is a shame because it would be better on a bigger screen.

Spacial audio is good though.

Hi folk
I want to share with you my expirience. Perhaps it will be useful for someone (at least for owners of NAS Synology):
you can enjoy all content if this is aac 5.1 audio and mp4(m4v) in DS Video app of Synology (streaming from NAS or saved in app).
Enjoy!

So macOS 11.1 released today adds Spatial Audio to macOS, but apparently only for the new Max, not the Pro… Kind of disappointed - since they mentioned Spatial Audio as "coming to macOS Big Sur" long before the Max's announcement. You'd think they'd apply it to the product that supported Spatial Audio at the time of its announcement...

So does anyone know if spatial audio for the AirPods Max works on macOS 11.1 for any apps and content (eg. YouTube videos)?

Or does it have to be specific apps (eg. Apple TV) or videos with spatial audio enabled (and how would we know)?

I am sure that Spatial Audio, like iMessage and Facetime, will just be yet another feature that will be locked to Apple devices and entice and discourage you from leaving the Apple ecosystem/walled garden.

Which makes sense. Why waste time and money, and especially time on this feature if it returns you profits in the long run? Apple is a business after all.

Is it confirmed or just based on the changelog?
Can Airpods Pro owners confirm that in 11.1 they can’t do Spatial Audio?

That seems odd. Has anyone actually tested it?

Its one way of looking at things , but the way I see it , many folks are "Anti Apple" , that is, they won't buy any Apple product , but once they get the first one , whatever that might be (my bet is on iPads or Watch, as they are no real competition in that space) , they realize that they are good quality products , and usually get more Apple after that , so if the headphones can be entry point to the Apple ecosystem for folks who never own Apple products before just because the feature is so good that they want to have it, I say its a win , the same happened with the AirPods ,everyone are getting them , and they realize "hey apple makes a product I like ! maybe they are not that bad/evil".

This makes no sense. People who are "anti" Apple generally won't buy Apple products. And even if they were FORCED to I don't think that would be enough to change them from being "anti".

That's like saying vegetarians are "anti" meat but as soon as they've had their first McDonald's they suddenly realise meat is the thing they've been missing out on
