Every year the same topic.
Smartphones have matured enough years ago not to be a thing that's worthy of an yearly upgrade.
Most of Apple's lineup is that way, at this point. From time to time you get a 'super cycle' (design change + features; think iPhone X or Apple Watch Series 4, iPad Pro 2018 etc.), but most of the time its an iterative cycle.
I would argue that, even from a 'fan' perspective, most of the gear isn't really worthy a yearly, often even every 2 year, upgrade (iPhone XS? Apple Watch series 6? iPad Pro 2020? etc).

Number to number…for the money not enough change for sure to buy…maybe from 11 but probably not even then for sure bang for the buck, maybe only for gear head that has money to throw away.

And oh get ready for price increase lol Apple is something for sure but they get away with it as long as consumers blindly pay it.

Well I’ll be ordering the pro versions for me and my family as I did last year. BUT there better be some crazy good upgrade trade in offers or something.

That's just some rando having a rant. I couldn't take it seriously even if some/most of the tech details seem correct.

It is disappointing that the notch is only a fraction smaller. The promotion 120 will be a great upgrade on the Pro models along with a better camera, but it's missing a Killer App. The rumor that there could be FaceID that unlocks the phone whilst wearing a mask could change everything though. It would make the IP13 fly off the shelves. Especially in Asia. But I don't think that is coming. I will get the 13 PM as I'm giving the XS Max to the missus, but I really wish the notch was a punch hole and it had Touch ID as well as Face ID. That would have made it a stonking upgrade.

Go give them your money, I don’t care…mine is safe making money.

Haha. You can do both, ya know...
The iPhone 12 is a pretty average piece of kit... and 12 months older makes it even less desirable. Crappy big notch, no promotion, poor dark light camera. Almost no point upgrading for an XS Max apart from slightly bigger screen and somewhat better camera. 5G isn't a big deal to me at this point and the shape is whatever considering most people put it in a horrible case. Missus wants my XS Max as her phone is on it's final silicon. So I decided to pay the extra couple hundred and get the new phone over the overrated (IMO) iPhone 12.

I will say that NEXT YEAR's phone will definitely be a better upgrade than this year, but 2023 will be the killer year to upgrade. No notch or punch hole and everything matured to perfection.

Oh really? Hehe, obviously you haven’t even tried the 12-series. FYI, the 12-series cameras (even the base models like the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini) have a vastly improved camera over your XS, especially in low light conditions.
oh yeah, XS MAX is horrendous for low light. 12 is way better but low light is one of the big improvements according to rumors

I will hang on to my 12 Pro Max for now, but if Apple Watch 7 comes out with hard edges, I'm ready to trade in my series 6 so the two devices "match" aesthetically.....

Or wait...I might ditch Apple Watch altogether because I feel like I've been a slave to the watch's monthly challenges!

Now that’s stonks!

top tip: its generally never "worth" going from device version N to device version N+1.
Since the 6S that's been true, but the improvement of the 6S over the 6 was definitely worth the upgrade soley because the RAM doubled from 1GB to 2. I didn't appreciate the difference at the time (I bought a 1 year old 6) but the more expensive 6S in hindsight would have definitely been the better purchase.

Only addicts upgrade every year anyway. Expecting massive changes in an S year is unlikely.
Ummm I sell my iPhone for about £600 every year, then I take that money and upgrade to the new one with my network. I pay £90 per month which includes loss/damage insurance, Apple Music and some other perks. So it makes sense upgrading every year. Not sure what equity is left in the latest generation iPhone after 14 is out.

So you are on a forever loop for monthly payment to Apple…nice!

This will probably be the first time I upgrade separately from my wife. We both got the 5, 6s Plus and XR together, but I’m ready to upgrade to something new this year and she doesn’t care about getting a new one. She didn’t even really want the XR at the time, but we got a BOGO deal.

Going from a XR to 13 Pro Max will be a nice upgrade, though. Basically everything about it has been improved, even if I was just upgrading to a 12 Pro Max (although I’m glad to be waiting for this year’s iteration instead). For me, I can benefit from 2nd gen 5G, a bigger screen, OLED, ProMotion, smaller notch, significantly better cameras. The list goes on. Looking forward to it.

I saw that news story about increased prices too, but it also says that would go into effect in January 2022. So that makes me want to pick one up before January for sure. My plan is to preorder it, unless I talk myself out of getting it entirely. I did that last year.

Going to sell over priced 12 pro max and get just the 12(not pro) and wait for 14 to get bang for the buck upgrade from 12. I like my money.

If you’ve got a 12 then there would be little point upgrading for minimal differences anyway. Most people upgrade every 2 to 3 years so this year will be good for anybody with an iPhone older than a 12 I would say.

Yup same thoughts here, of course some local outliers will protest but most folks I know keep their phones minimum 2 years.

What’s stopping you from buying a new phone only every other year? Not everyone is going to be on the same upgrade cycle as you after all.
Wouldn't it be better in terms of carbon footprint? If they cannot get meaningful upgrades every year, just go to 2 year cycle so they don't have to set up new production ramps every year for new models. I bet that even if new models share some of the components, most of the materials are new and they need new ramps.
