Feels like slightly worse, maybe ~1 hour shorter. To me it's not a big deal but might be more important in your use case.
Ugh, really? I was sure it would be at least the same, if not better. I'm not sure why I was so sure though.

0-25% display brightness, ProMotion disabled (seems to help stop my iPad-induced headache)

Can you please elaborate on why ProMotion giving you a headache? I was just about to replace my 1st gen 12.9" iPad Pro with one that has ProMotion in order to avoid headaches when scrolling, since I assume 120Hz would make scrolling books and websites much smoother?

No idea why. All I know is after I disabled ProMotion, the pressure I was feeling in my head eased off/was reduced.

I wonder if it was me turning off the backlit keyboard that made the difference…
How do you turn off the backlit keyboard? I go into settings and hardware keyboard and the slider for keyboard brightness cannot be moved at all.

Edit: Solved. You need to be in a dark room first and open the iPad. Then you can adjust the brightness of the keyboard to zero

So what's the consensus on the new M1 12.9 battery life? I'm still debating whether to upgrade from my 12.9 2020 iPad Pro, and the battery on that thing is pretty poor, probably the worst thing about it...

Mine is a bit better, my guess is that at say 50% on the brightness slider they would be about the same but the 2021 is brighter overall so I don’t need to have the slider as high as before.

I did not ever own a 12.9 prior to this one but from what I can tell it should be comparable, getting close to the 10 hour battery life but you will most likely notice less battery life at higher brightness levels pound for pound when comparing to the previous gens.

Thanks, didn’t know that was even an option.

At highest brightness it drains like crazy
With many bulb types, it takes more energy to initially light them than it does to keep them lit. I wonder if this is the same for LEDs? I wonder if the 10K mini LEDs use more energy than the previous backlight method. Also, the GPU/CPU needs to treat the mini LED layer as a second display in order to dynamically alter the backlights. I would guess these changes taken together would require more energy usage than the previous static LED sidebar setup, but I am guessing nonetheless.

The battery life is definately improved since I did run my iPad to 0% once. Between using it 5 hours from morning til I leave to work, 2 hours that night after I got home and same thing the next day on a single charge. Not bad really. Mostly browsing, solitaire, a couple YouTube videos, and some gaming in those 2 days.

Is it good to run the battery all the way down until it discharges?

I have to say that that battery life is the biggest disappointment with the 12.9 … IMO
Just don’t understand why i have to turn everything off to use it longer, that really defeats the purpose of having paid so much for what should be a premium device.
Fully agree, it's like buying a Ferrari and sticking budget wheels on and using low cost octane fuel

There are always two sides to this sort of topic. Some says it’s bad, some says it’s better. I personally recommend doing your own research, and finding answers that fit your particular style or type of questions. Everyone’s answer is always different. Every use case by any individual person is different.

I have always done this ever since I got my first mobile device (cell phone). I never had any bad battery issues or killed it afterwards yet. I have run down to 5% then charge many times, I have also left it plugged in for days and use it lots on my old 12.9” Ipad I have had for 5 years still last 6-8 hours a day on light use, less when gaming of course. My son now has my old iPad, and he uses it for videos and some games.

Here
I've been going through about 20% a day with just a few hours of usage - so on par with Apple's promise and much better than my 4 year old iPad Pro 10.5"

If I charge this new iPad while it is powered down will it automatically turn on once it reaches 100%?
If it ran out of battery and turned off then yes, it will automatically turn on but if you manually turn it off then no. I will have to manually turn in back on.

Mine was setup as a new iPad and the battery drains like crazy, web browsing for a few mins and the percentage would drop really quickly. Had a feeling something might be wrong with the battery then last night it was at 70% and this morning it was off with no battery power left at all.

Also the screen on time would be 1.5hrs one day then the next it would be 55mins (for example)

I am returning it today and picking up a replacement, thankfully one of the stores has one.

I think you have a bad device. I had the same issue back when the pro 10.5 came out. It gave me a headache and made me feel sick and somthing about the screen just didn’t look right. I Returned it waited a few months bought another and that one was perfect(until it developed the infamus white spot issue).
