So I’m curious to see what issues will be popping up with M1 Macs once more users start using them. Please post it here!

Here is what I just stumbled upon:

I got the new MBA base config. I haven't had any issues with it so far.

However, Big Sur *really* hates running on my 2014 5K Retina iMac. I'm hoping they get it all sorted out soon.

My personal belief is a lot of these reported issues are actually with Big Sur.

I've had it over a week.. Just ran it again after a clean reboot.. got 6666. hmm :). What scores are others seeing on the M1 air? This is a 8/7. 16G/512G model.
I get about 7225 on my 16 GB/1 TB model M1 MacBook Air. I might actually return it if you really are seeing that low of performance. It could mean that when they manufactured it, they weren't careful with the thermal paste or that the heat sink is slightly misaligned.

But I would also make sure that I'm testing it correctly. No point in going through the hassle of a return if it is pilot error.

Make sure you start from a reboot. Use Activity Monitor to make sure nothing is running in the background before you start. Sometimes it takes a minute or two from reboot for all activity to die down. Turn off networking. Set do not disturb (without networking on, this might be redundant but they give you a nice button on the keyboard so it doesn't hurt.) Quit activity monitor and anything else that is running. Let it run without any interaction with the keyboard or trackpad. If you are still getting under 7200, I would consider returning it and getting another.

I will receive a new display from BenQ in a couple of days and I will be using that as primary connected to USB-C/Thunderbolt
I hope you haven't ordered the PD3220U ..
If you have it only works at 30hz via DP or USB-C on the M1's
HDMI works @ 60hz if you have a good USBC-> HDMI cable, but obviously no power delivery and USB upstream functionality.

Apple and BenQ are aware, but no movement on it in over a week.

Yep.. best score I've ever seen is 6800.. Weird.. single core score is fine.. Must not be a good copy, nothing is running when I run the test, I always do it from a clean boot and stop everything else.

I bought the EL2870U because of budget :)

I'm using M1 Mac mini. My issues so far:

- New GPU drivers don't recognize manually forced HiDPI settings for non-Apple displays
- Also tools like MonitorControl or ExternalDisplayBrightness don't work
- Type-C hub's USB-C ports don't work when connecting to M1 Mac mini (works on Intel model)
- On macOS TIDAL app, streaming quality is limited to NORMAL and HIGH. HIFI and MASTER formats don't work

Although Big Sur is "supported" on your machine if you expect Apple to sort out whatever issues you're having you can forget it. Your machine approaching 7 years old. They're focusing on their newer products with their latest OS, which is understandable.

Hi,

I have previously reported this issue in another topic but worth throwing in there.

I have had less than satisfactory battery issue with 2 MBA M1 so far. My first laptop would drop exactly a 1% of battery every 4-5 minutes, resulting in around 6ish hours of screen time. I have controlled it and measured it over a week or so, only safari was being used, all indexing was completed (iMessage, photos, mail, spotlight etc).

After speaking to apple I was advised that my machine must have been faulty as there was no significant cpu hungry processes running and battery drain was easy to prove. I was advised to replace the machine (bought from amazon).

Now I am on the second machine and... this one drops 1% of battery every 6-7 minutes lol. Very similar story! Looking at their serial number they are very similar with only one letter being different - same batch?

Very worrying as now I will have to request a third machine from amazon and feeling like a willy about it.

Was this with a thunderbolt 3 to DP 1.4 cable?

That's strange indeed. Did you dual-boot to a vanilla environment and try to use it like that for some representative tasks? If you're already replaced it once, the odds are it's not a lemon, there's something fishy and well-hidden going on with software. And the only way to be sure is to boot into a controlled know-good environment and compare.

If a vanilla installation still drains too much battery, I suppose the only option is that you really did get two lemons in a row. That'd be quite extraordinary.

I've got everything and the kitchen sink installed, and 12 hours is easy to achieve. Even 18 if web browsing in a dark room. I don't really know how to get less than 8 hours out of it, if not running Cinebench 24/7.

Is there nothing in Activity Monitor > Energy that shows a high long-term energy impact? That's also the place to see the remaining battery life projections.

Thanks for your reply!

During apple diagnostic (virtual one), we have put it into the safe mode and it checked activity monitor for anything suspicious - nothing stood out. It drained in the safe mode with the same speed.

I have been consistently monitoring activity monitor/energy tab, and really nothing coming up as a more than significant use.

I think I am going to run 2 cycles to see if it stabilise and if not.. try with a third one!

I have had my MacBook Pro mid 2012 for 8 years and is still going strong - happy to have 2 lemons in the row in return for last 8 years :)

I've got a lower end Focusrite 2-input USB audio interface and it works fine. Rode USB mic, no issues. Frankly, never noticed anything with any of the dozen audio inputs and outputs that come with the Mac, monitors, microphones, Focusrite and others. Those aren't TB3 audio devices. I connect to them via a TB3 dock.

None of them need drivers though. Could it be that your devices require a custom driver that at minimum needs a reinstall? Or do you have other low level audio drivers running that might misbehave in M1 / Big Sur, causing collateral issues?

Edit: Lots of Logic Pro users have M1 reviews out in YouTube too. Haven't heard this complaint there. This is to say that once you find the root cause, there's a good chance those devices will work again.
The root cause is that these devices require drivers and there are none. Only class compliant USB devices right now.

it doesn't matter, its an issue with the screen and the m1 - apple and benQ are aware of it.
only HDMI works at 4k 60Hz on that screen
for now, everything else is 4k @ 30hz.
no ETA for fixes thus far - both the manager of the display team at apple and a BenQ rep have confirmed the issue.

That is odd. Just to check, you didn't mention screen brightness. How's it usually set? No peripherals hooked up? Still losing power during sleep?

Brightness around 50-60%, never full. No peripherals hooked up at all. In the second laptop is losing around 1% every 8 hours during sleep, in the first one would lose around 8% for 8 hours.

I will try to drain it with a reasonable use over the next few days and will post stats up.

M1 MacBook Pro has significantly worse battery life when it has something plugged in to it. Thought it was the USB hub I was using for its HDMI port, but it also drains with a USB-C to HDMI cable that I got for when plugged into the external display. It also drains when the usb hub is in and not connected to anything too. Any ideas?

I tried to do a quick-search of this thread and couldn't find anything specific to my issue. I'm sorry if it's been solved already. Feel free to re-route me.

I'm having sound issues. Cracking/buzzing/static sounds while playing music. The kind of sound you get when your speakers have reached their limit. Only, I'm not blasting music. This shouldn't be happening. For reference, I have an M1 MBP. I've had it less than 2 weeks.

I've tested the sound on many different tracks and still dealing with the issue. It isn't happening all the time, but it is happening consistently on every single track.

Thoughts?

May be normal. A lot of adapters and peripherals draw power even when not in use, so it's a good idea not to keep them plugged in to your laptop when on battery power unless you're using them.

Haven't noticed other complaints about this either. Don't think that's normal. What are you using to play the music?

Just the Music app. It’s a real pain.
