All of my apps work, and they work fast. I've had zero problems with the hardware, including bluetooth.

There are two (probably) software-related issues that are rather annoying, both of which I certainly hope will improve once more point updates arrive. Both of these did happen with a 16" MBP running Catalina as well, but they were rare. With the current M1 setup they are common (1) or constant (2).

1. Kernel panics when docking the device. Lid closed, plugging in two TB3 wires. This lits up 3 monitors and a whole lot of USB-C, TB3 and USB3/2 devices. It's a lot to wake up to, but it was manageable under Catalina/16". There were some panics but they were rare. With M1 / Big Sur they are common, I think the panic rate is about 20% but haven't kept score. This means that I'd better close all files and apps before docking the Air.

There have been no panics when using the Air just as a laptop.

2. Time Machine + APFS + NAS + WiFi is now slow to the point of being unusable. HFS+ and Catalina on the 16" MBP were fast enough to run over WiFi. When APFS came with Big Sur, the 16" was noticeably slower with backups of long history. Now with M1 / Big Sur the same backup hardware is impossibly slow. Watching "tmutil status" it proceeds at the rate of few files per minute, maybe 1 GB/hour. Sometimes it jumps ahead quickly, 40-80 MB/s and then starts grinding at snail speed again. I can't quite complete a day's worth of backups, unless I let TM run all day.

I know #2 could be due to a whole number of reasons, but I've already double-checked the usual suspects. The 5 GHz Wifi mesh is fast in every way and every corner. The drives are OK. The sparsebundle checks out. Initial backup is fast. The two backup destinations work poorly the same way and both were OK with 16"/Catalina. Only the updates are impossibly slow with the current setup. And I've tried "erase + back it up again" twice.

Using a direct 1 Gbit Ethernet connection it's still very slow. Backing up a 5 GB update could take an hour. The performance is similarly poor towards a Time Capsule and a Raspberry Pi. And the performance was similarly OK with the 16" and Catalina, then later with Big Sur betas.

The workaround is to use Ethernet (and to remember to manually unmount before yanking the cables off) and just wait until it's done and not leave the Ethernet/WiFi connection until it is.

With all that said, I appreciate the ergonomics and silence, jaw-dropping responsiveness and endless battery life more than I dislike those two issues, so the Air is still a keeper, even if it doesn't work perfectly. All things considered, I've never had a Mac (or Windows) that does. I've left feedback to Apple about these issues.

I use a Sceptre 50" 4k UHD TV as the display for my mac mini. I had my late-2014 mac mini connected to it which displayed at 3840x2160 (2160p/4k UHD), UI looks like 1920x1080 @ 30hz, as the default, which looked beautiful and displayed proper sizes of windows/icons. I recently received my brand new M1 Mac Mini and ran into a hugely annoying issue.

For some reason the new mac mini reads the display default as 1680x1050 @ 60hz, which looks horrendously bad, and if I manually change it to the 4k resolution (after holding 'Option' and clicking 'Scaled' in Display preferences) everything looks nice and sharp but all windows/icons are resized to be extremely small and illegible.

It appears as though this new mac mini won't recognize my display as HiDPI capable, even though my 2014 mac does. I am using the same HDMI cable I was using with the 2014 mac, and it's plugged into the same port on my TV (that has HDMI 2.0 enabled). Please let me know your thoughts, thanks.

Mac Mini M1 doesn't seem to like ANY audio interfaces. I've tried Thunderbolt (through adapter) Focusrite Clarett and USB Roland Studio-Capture. These are High-End units. Now they're useless because of Mac Mini. It's gotta go.
Expensive doesn’t mean high end.
RME has already confirmed M1 drivers so i’m not at all worried any of two wouldn’t work.

I'm trying to create a bootable external drive for my M1 Mac Mini, but everything I'm trying is coming up with "this version of macOS is outdated... update." Anyone had any luck getting an install of macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 running off an external drive on their M1 Mac?

MBA M1.

Compatibility issues with USB Type Cables for my external NVMe. After trying many boxes I finally found 2 that worked. Kinda.
On the first day all run smoothly, on the second day I cannot write, partition or even format the NVMe!

EDIT: Turns out updating Big Sur fixed it.

Got my M1 MBP 8/512 tonight. One of the first things I figured I'd try was install Overcast from the App Store now that I have a machine that'll run iOS apps. It ran once and synced with my account. Now when I run it, it only says that the "application can't be opened" with a "-36" next to it. Even after a restart, it won't boot. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I played with some terminal commands to re enable startup chime,on my MBA M1.
i tried to reset nvram but some hours later i started my mac after shutdown and have this message
"reinstall macos :( " i am wondering why a fresh install days before not brought back the chime.

Updtae. To reset Nvram on silicon macs with the terminal command (sudo nvram -c) shows some error message but it works, even saved wlan password is erased in recovery mode with this. I tried it again but instead of reinstalling the os i selected the startup disk Macintosh HD and my Mac runs again without reinstalling.

I've had the following issues with my M1 Mini:

1) Sleep doesn't work as expected - assuming the light on the Mini should change in brightness when it's sleeping. The screens turn off but the Mini's LED stays lit at a constant brightness. However, there is a slight noise from the attached speakers when I wake the screen, which might indicate that it had disconnected and reconnected to the audio interface the speakers are connected to.

2) Safari has crashed a couple of times in the last 4 days. I think this happened during or after a sleep event (which may have failed) but it's a bit concerning because I do a lot of work in web-based documents.

3) I use a Dell D6000 dock with DisplayLink into which 2 x 1080p monitors are connected. I've had several issues with this.
i) where the screens weren't visible at all (after a reboot). Unplugging and plugging in the dock a couple of times fixed the issue
ii) Similar story with the Rode AI-1 audio interface. Doesn't always return after waking from a dark screen. Again, unplugging the dock twice fixes it (once is not enough!)
iii) I had a bizarre problem where I couldn't move my cursor to the 2nd screen, where the login prompt was located, even though I could move off the first screen into some "invisible" space. Again, reconnecting the dock fixed it.
iv) similar issue with an invisible window that couldn't be found or moved to a visible screen, and a browser window that got stuck on one side of the screen and couldn't be moved.

So most of the issues are dock related, which is an inconvenience but not a show-stopper. It does mean I have to position the Mini where I can easily unplug the dock though, so it is not ideal ergonomically.

On point 1) note that

“On Mac mini models from 2018, the SIL stays on when the computer is in sleep.”

I interpret this to mean things are functioning as expected, and it is user expectations that are faulty if blinking is expected ?

Figured I would chime in with my MBP experience since launch day. Off the bat I had the weird update issue to 11.01 where it didn't wanna go, then did but I still feel like it has a botched install tbh. I have had Safari, Mail, and Messages become unresponsive entirely randomly. The Touch Bar and system UI also becomes randomly unresponsive randomly. Feels just like the system stalls out and then suddenly catches back up and like its good. What compounds the issue for me is normally I'll wipe the SSD and restore MacOS no problem, now without internet recovery and the current restore bugs, I am honestly too scared (as an experienced IT person) to wipe this and then end up in an unusable state. It shouldn't be as difficult as it currently is to be able to wipe the SSD and tell the computer, reinstall the latest MacOS version. I hope to god we can get internet recovery back I loved that.

Base model MBA, 8/256. Only bug I’ve found so far is the screen saver sometimes comes on whilst I’m using it and I can’t get it to go away without closing the lid. The arrow even appears in front of the screen saver. Software bug so not concerned

I'm also having some issues with sleep mode on the MacBook Pro M1. Just now I lift the lid and unlock with Touch ID, only to realize that the Touch Bar is 100% bricked and that the brightness is set to minimum.

Had to restart. Which in a way defeated the purpose of the sleep mode lol.

All is smooth with my M1 Air except it connecting to an external display. I have to plug it in/disconnect constantly to get it to push through. Then sometimes it randomly disconnects.

Thank you; I didn't realize that the SIL behaviour had changed in 2018. It's probably working correctly.

Having a few issues. The worst one is how hot the MBP gets. When I live stream in 4K it gets very hot to the touch and today the fan even came on. It’s not as loud as an Intel Mac but it’s certainly not cool and silent. Just me?

Bought my MM with M1 about a week ago. While the machine is very fast the issues with my monitor is having me thinking about returning it and waiting for the iMac M1. It doesn’t like the usb-c to display port. If I reboot the machine the monitor will come on and work fine. Once it goes to sleep however the monitor will not come back on unless I reboot it. I’ve read several forums and this seems to be a common issues with the Display port going back to the intel versions. Also when Inuse the HDMI it works normal however any settings I make in the Display Preferences area it gets erased Everytime it I turn the machine back on???

2hrs of Lightroom Classic and 350gb of swap written. I guess the 8gb wasn't enough after all...

Currently investigating why it's so high... I'm guessing it has something with my external 2.5k monitor and LR VRAM..

Do you mean watching 4K videos, or capturing video from a 4K camera and streaming it with OBS or similar?

4K video viewed in Safari (from YouTube) hardly even hits the CPU/GPU. I use a video capture card & a DSLR for video conferences and don't notice much CPU load either (but the camera is outputting 1080p, not 4K)

has anyone got a straight answer from apple about the Bluetooth audio glitching out with AirPods (Pro)? Every minute or 5 it’s drops the sound for a second or sound gets distorted for 2 seconds. Clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the menu and clicking on airplay icon in music causes glitch or left / right to go out of sync, or stop playing all together. Even clicking the wifi icon in menu will cause it too glitch. Can’t use it for meeting or streaming any movies. Too annoying ?

Have reset Bluetooth module, reset devices, removed all devices, reset factory settings, rebooted many times, reinstalled from scratch. At wits end.

Have 11.1 installed (got the RC2 early) and no better. Is it just Bit Sur? Or should I send it back?

edit. M1 Air base model.
