As far as I have gathered, it might be related to uptime, as the Mac is quite responsive with every task the first hour or two.
THIS. it seems the m1 behaves like a fast rc car that run out of fuel very fast. you need a real car to travel. the initial arm is the new thing / X86 is dead is slowly fading away.

I also set up as new, twice.
And I used Migration Assistant to import everything from a CCC Catalina clone onto my Mac Mini M1 16gb/1TB and so far everything is working flawlessly.

Multiple Bluetooth devices all connect and are stable, 4K monitor via HDMI all good, WiFi as fast as router will allow, file transfers over local network to Synology DiskStation at decent speed, backups of iPad Air 2020 and iPhone 12 Pro Max all fast via USB C. All seems to be smooth as silk and to be honest even better than I expected.

Hi,

I have the M1 Mac mini and the M1 MacBook Air (both base models) - I also have the 2018 i7 Mac mini with 32 GB RAM and eGPU (RX 580) and a 2016 MacBook and a 2019 15" MacBook Pro (base model, but with 16 GB of RAM).

The M1 MBA seems to be fine, have not had too much time to use it the past week since I got it but it convinced me to also get the M1 Mac mini. I normally browse that WWW and use Plex and my heaviest task is editing 4K H.264 footage in FCP (with some MotionVFX and other plugins). For that the M1 MBA was quite fast, thus the decision to get the M1 Mac mini for home.

But while the M1 Mac mini does perform well in FCP (at the beginning), after some time, the Mac becomes laggy, opening or switching apps seems to take a while (up to 10/15 seconds), then the in-app performance is lacking too, Safari at the moment had problems recognising my keys while pressing them or it takes a second or three to open a new tab an register the letters I have already pressed.
Clicking in the menu bar to take a closer look at some items sometimes takes another second or two.

As far as I have gathered, it might be related to uptime, as the Mac is quite responsive with every task the first hour or two.

At first I thought it was related to USB, Thunderbolt and Bluetooth, as I have the OWC 14-port TB3 Dock connected (now not anymore, it has to be replugged after a restart) and an MX Master 3 (for Mac, hahaha) via Bluetooth (now via Unify Dongle) and an USB 3 device.
Now I just have connected the display to the innermost USB-A port and connect from the Dell's four USB 3 ports (one Unify Dongle, one SSD and whatever comes next).

During initial setup I also had the problem of not being able to connect the MX Master 3 (it would have been its first computer, just bought it) or the Magic Keyboard with Numpad (A1843, worked fine on the 2018 i7 Mac mini).
Then I had the idea to connect my old Apple keyboard with USB cable (which works fine on the 2018 Mac mini and a Windows 10 box - its main use) and a USB mouse.
The mouse was registered if connected directly to the M1 Mac mini, but not via the USB keyboard, which also did not get recognised. A "logickeyboard" for FCP X helped me out in the end.
I still cannot get the M1 Mac mini to recognise the Apple USB keyboard though.

I also did a clean install at some point (this sentence took five seconds to appear after I typed "I als"), which is a bit more cumbersome, but doable using this Apple Support KB. (looking up the link in the Safari browser history took almost a minute with all the lag, but I will restart once this is posted)

The clean install did not help. I am on the verge of returning the M1 Mac mini or getting it replaced (however long it takes nowadays), as the performance in FCP is WOW and 4K playback is buttery smooth, but the overall performance is merde.

PS: The CPU was hardly above 30% (using iStat Menus), though the RAM usage is often around 75% (pressure around 70% - mostly yellow).

Well, anyone any ideas?
I have one question why only 8GB of RAM? You configured your Intel Mini with 32GB and your 2019 MBP with 16GB. I suspect that might be the cause of some of your problems.

Because comparable x86 chips start off slower and stay that way? M1 keeps right on cruising with enough RAM. The post you responded to is likely about a RAM limit, not the processor.

Go into the messages app settings and check that messages in the cloud is enabled. It didn’t enable by default for me so I had to turn it on
It is enabled. Even if press 'Sync Now' it doesn't sync straight away. Sometimes it syncs after an amount of time - 5-10 minutes or more later - but this is so clunky.

My iMac and iPhone sync immediately.

wait, wasn't the ram a non issue last week? a thing that we shouldn't even think about it thanks to the power of the m series?

? Yes, a lot of wishful thinking. I really don't understand why people believe that. But there are also people who believe that the earth is flat.

No, it was never a nonissue, and I never saw anyone say or imply it was.

Hi, I have the new MacBook Air M1 8/512 attached to a DELL U2520d via USB-C that also charges the Mac and I have two issue that my old MacBook Pro 2016 has not:

1) if I shut down the Mac while attached to the monitor the Mac every 3/4 seconds make a sound like when it starts to charge. The monitor loops from safe mode to usb-c attached state.

2) if I turn on the monitor with the Mac already attached the Mac every 3/4 seconds make a sound like when it starts to charge and Big Sur doesn't boot. The monitor loops from safe mode to usb-c attached state.

Is anyone experiencing the same issue? Is there a solution for this?

The title should be enough to show amount of RAM remains an issue.
I disagree, the title suggests that 8gb might be sufficient which it might be true for someone just browsing the web or using Microsoft word.

The second post says: "Allegedly, 8GB is the new 16GB and 16GB the new 32. However, that all depends on who you listen to."

None of that remotely implies RAM isn't still an issue, not even close. We don't need to create another thread about that, in any case.

Really? "Allegedly, 8GB is the new 16GB and 16GB the new 32" doesn't imply that RAM isn't an issue?

Issue #1: whenever I restart, my Apple keyboard doesn't connect. I have to plug it in to log in and then it works from there. Also, I lose my Bluetooth bose headphones occasionally as well.
Issue #2: My Samsung printer won't print because there are no drivers for it. I had to swap out for an AirPrint printer.
Issue #3: Google Drive sync and the other Google drive app don't work on M1.
Issue #4: I lose my second display after the monitors go to sleep. Apparently, it's a problem with the Apple USB3 to display port adapter.

Those with issues, did you do clean set up or migrate all the problems from an earlier build?
Not trying to yank chains, I did, new set up, installed two intel, Rosetta2 and Xcode. I've had no problems. Just trying to see if there is a common scenario.
Clean install. Lot's of problems with peripherals such as Apple USB C to Display port adapter, Printer, Bluetooth headphones, and Apple wireless keyboard.

im still curious if people that migrate their data over from another Mac are the ones having more issues? I setup as new and so far so good.
I'm curious if you are on a self-contained laptop with no interaction with peripherals such as external displays, external keyboards, headphones, and printers?

Yes and no. I don’t use external monitors kb etc yet but I’ve streamed to my AirPods and several bt speakers.

That probably explains your good fortune as well as everyone else's. It's one thing for Apple to get their equipment working all within the same device, but much more difficult for them to interact with the millions of combinations of peripherals out there. Of course, I would have imagined that they would have tested their own BT keyboard and display adapter, but apparently not as they don't work consistently.

I've had a few issues with my Mac Mini -- mostly related to peripherals, but I can't get Google Drive to work on mine. Can you? I did a clean install.

Do you still have a progress bar under the list of chats? It doesn’t sync properly until it has completed downloading the entire chat database. It took a while to do this on my Mac as I have conversations going back years which have hundreds of pics in. What you are seeing is not normal behaviour, as soon as you turn the Mac on and Connect to the internet messages syncs.

No progress bar under the chats. I think my cloud history is already downloaded to the machine.

It does eventually sync, but can take up to 15 minutes to reflect any new messages once I open the M1 MacBook Pro. Going to Messages Prefs and clicking the 'Sync Now' button makes no difference.

It's tedious and annoying and doesn't happen between iPhone, iPad and iMac - just this M1 MacBook Pro. No idea how to fix it or whether it even can be fixed, wondering if it's a bug in the M1 version of Big Sur.
