Just created an account to try and get some help. I've also tried a few monitors - two Samsung 32" G5s and two Philips 328E1CA 4Ks. I didn't notice any flickering with the G5s, but the text was blurry so I ended up returning those, figured it may be related to the 2k resolution capacity. Then the Philips ones get here and they both flicker side by side. Using a Mokin adapter for both HDMI outputs.

Anyway, I tried to read through several pages, and it seems there's no reliable fix. I made this account because I am just wondering, is there *ANY* monitor, ideally at least 27" if not 32"+ that has been found to reliably be compatible with an M1? 4k would be preferable but at this point I just want non-flickering, non-blurry external displays, as I'm sure everyone here wants as well. Who knew this was too much to ask for.

FWIW, I'm using a 2021 MacBook Pro 16". Figured I'd ask before I get on the phone with Apple and try to get an M2 out of them, which will likely be a fruitless attempt on my part. So before I fail in my quest and then return these monitors too, anyone have any M1-compatible monitor suggestions as described above?

Thanks!
I can confirm that LG 32UN650 works with mac book air M1 - did had issues with dell monitors and did long research...

I just installed the developer preview of Mac OS Ventura (13 beta 3) this morning, and so far I've not had the issue anymore. On 12.x I had it almost immediately when I started up. I have a studio m1 max with MSI Optix G27. Was only experiencing issues with the one monitor I had plugged into the actual HDMI port and a USB-C/HDMI adapter. The other monitor through DisplayPort was not having the same issue.

Almost tree days without problems on 13.0 Beta (22A5295i)

@paynoattn and @gabxav Can you please confirm that you do not had issues with MAC OS 13?

this issue seems to flare up at random. i hadn't had any issue for weeks, but then it cropped up again. i saw someone mention a while back their benq monitor didn't suffer the issue, but wanted to add the counterpoint that i have the exact same model and it crops up at random intervals.

I've had the flicker/ghosting occur on my Mac Studio Max a few times, latest was last night. Shut down the Mac, turned off the Benq 27" 2k display. This morning, powered it all up and the condition was still there at the log in screen.

On Ventura beta Version 13.0 Beta (22A5331f) with 14" MBP M1 with my Dell S2721Q connected thru HDMI and it happened to me again out of no where. It probably happens to me every 2 weeks. Hope Apple fixes this soon.

Seems like they haven't even tried to fix it since Monterey since the same thing is still happening.

They probably can't fix it, I doubt that it would go this long not addressed.

Hi. I've been struggling with this issue for quite long and found many opinions that this occurrs randomly. In my case there are several pages that have almost 100% chance to cause flicker/retention. I attach a full resolution screenshot as an example. Seems that this color + multiple vertical lines are more likely to force this issue. I'm currently using BenQ PD3220U. If you have the same problem and Apple says they are not able to reproduce it, send them this.

fix that flickering with reset to factory monitor settings + hight resolution cable speed with rgb color system (not ycb)
think it's a M chip trouble and it's will be fixed in next ventura updates
its not fixed in the beta

I have the same problems. MacBook Air m1 acer 4k display (60hz) Tried very cheap usb c idmi hubs and very expensive thunderbolt 3 anker hubs. Always flickering randomly. Now I use a direct usb c to display port and it still happens especially in dark mode.

Can anyone send a yt video where it flickers ALWAYS to test?

I'm impressed this thread is still going after nearly two years.

Personally, I have long ago retired my problematic Dell monitor from Mac use (actually, demoted to a seldom used PC). The LG that replaced it works reasonably well.

Consistent with some other posters, it does seem that LG tends to work better with Macs. Dell spent years blowing off Mac users as unsupported before seemingly changing their mind in the last 1-2 years. But I still trust my experiences over any promises.

It's kind of ridiculous to me that we need to consider the compatibility for such a universal device (monitor) just because we are connecting it to an Apple product.

It shouldn't happen in the first place.

Like many others in this thread, I have the same problem.
I have a Gigabyte M27F monitor that gets lines from my Macbook M1. This does not happen with my older intel Macbook.

Yesterday it got a little worse. I got image retention, lines and worse image for a short period. I turned off the computer and disconnected my M1 from my external display. I tested with my PS5 to make sure it wasn't the screen that was the problem, but the problem remained. Same lines and image retention on my PS5.

I turned everything off and when I turned my PS5 back on after a minute or so, everything was back to normal.
Can a display have some internal memory/setting so that it retains a preset for my Macbook M1 and hence the problem persisted for a few minutes for my PS5?

(I saw someone write this exact thing further back in the thread, and that person was convinced that this was not a problem with the screen)

A bunch of users (including me) have reported this. The issue is definitely caused by the m1 macs and image retention DOES remain even if you switch the display to a different device ex. windows computer or ps5 etc. The only resolution for this issue seems to be to power off the monitor for some time and then turn it back on.

Its not clear how the m1 causes such issues where the image retention seems to persist for a while on the monitor itself despite switching to a different device. The key thing to note here is that these image retention will ALWAYS be triggered by the m1 (which will persist even after switching the monitor to a different input) and your other devices like PS5 or windows computer will NEVER trigger this issue by themselves.

Update here:
For Dell Users, switch Monitor from "High Data Speed" to "High Resolution" might do the trick.

No, not really. I would say that helps but does not solve it. My S2722QC still flickers from time to time even if I set the refresh rate to fixed 60Hz.

Thank you for your reply.
For my DELL P2723QE, the flickering seems disappeared.

I thought I'd contribute my experience to this thread, with 3 separate monitors so far exhibiting the same issue.

I ran into the image retention/flickering issue with 2x Dell G3223Ds (one of which was a replacement from Dell, which developed the issue immediately), which was being driven with a Startech dual Displayport Dock.

I'm now on a Dell/Alienware AW2721D which still has the same issue, and that was using the DisplayPort cable that came with the monitor, and still developed image retention.

Every time it happens for me, the screen is displaying mostly dark content as I run dark mode. I noticed that one time when the monitor was in this state, I was not able to use Lunar to use DDC to control the display, which makes me think it's DDC related. Other people's suggestions of disabling True Tone / automatic brightness adjustment would potentially relate to DDC.

My next step is to try a OWC Thunderbolt -> dual Displayport adapter to eliminate the Startech dock for my open case with Apple support.

I noticed something interesting when I used `displayplacer list` (https://github.com/jakehilborn/displayplacer), where it says the `color_depth` of the affected monitor being 7, rather than the 8 that I would expect. I use displayplacer because I had an issue where macOS would constantly forget the monitor arrangement, so I have a hotkey bound to run through a couple of combinations as I suspected DDC was not being passed through the Dock correctly, causing macOS to misidentify monitors.

Can affected users show me what your `displayplacer list` output looks like, specifically the last line?

Mine looks like this, after I forced `displayplacer` to use color_depth:8 for the affected monitor, which I'm hoping resolves this issue.

Code:
displayplacer "id:6685954E-5ED0-409C-B5D2-02B10BC5D41E res:2560x1440 hz:120 color_depth:8 scaling:off origin:(0,0) degree:0" "id:37D8832A-2D66-02CA-B9F7-8F30A301B230 res:1147x745 hz:120 color_depth:8 scaling:on origin:(2560,313) degree:0" "id:5E3388CE-815B-4118-A814-B8B6F311ADDE res:2560x1440 hz:60 color_depth:8 scaling:off origin:(0,-1440) degree:0"

Funny enough, my second external monitor is now displaying without any real hassle with Ventura. 144hz and everything without the flicker.

Hope you guys are getting the same results.

So I just "upgraded" to 2 Dell s2722qc monitors. I am getting terrible flickering on one of them. I'm using an OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock with a mini DP to HDMI and a USB-C to HDMI. I am using a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max.

I contacted Apple and they seem to know little about the flickering issue. What am I to do? Are there any 4K monitors that actually work without flickering? This is ridiculous... A $3500 machine can't even output to 4K monitors correctly!

Any ideas to fix this or suggestions on 4K monitors that will work without flickering? Thanks!

You try experimenting with different refresh rates on those monitors? different resolutions?

Hi,

this worked for me (Mac Mini M1, ASUS VP28UQGL):
In the Mac OS settings, in "Accessibility" I dragged the "Display contrast" slider just a TINY bit to the right.
The picture shows, how far I dragged the slider, it's barely over the "normal" mark.
Now, with the display contrast active, the problem is gone and the colors aren't altered in a noticeable way.
Display contrast.png

When using apps, that would normally trigger the flickering / vertical lines instantly,
I can only see the phenomenon develop at a very early stage now, almost not noticeable.

I only discovered this today, after 14 months of fruitless attempts to solve this annoying issue,
so I don't have long-term experience if it will stay this way.
Possibly, it's a solution for people with different monitors as well.

Kind regards,
Chris

EDIT 4th Nov. 2022: A few days later, it turned out, this is only a partial solution.
The vertical lines issue was rather shifted to other apps that didn't induce it before.
I'll use the display contrast function only, when an app is unusable otherwise and turn it back off for most of the time.
I have owned computers since 1998 and never experienced such persistent display issues with any machine I had before.

EDIT 2, 6th Nov. 2022: Activating the "Reduce motion" option not only made the overall experience with the OS
a bit more snappy, it seems to also have a small effect on how often the flickering and lines appear.
Another good advice might be daily power-cycling of the whole setup, i.e. turning off the extension cord with power switch for a few minutes.
The Mac Mini M1 in general is a great computer, I really love to use... when it behaves well without hiccups. :)

When you use a TB3 dock to connect 2 4K monitors, the bandwidth of a single TB3 port on mac wouldn't be enough to run 4K 60Hz at the same time, as each one would require about 18Gbps on one direction. It means the two TX lanes would be used up (each lane has max throughput of 10Gbps).

You may connect one monitor directly to another TB port on the mac itself. That should solve the flickering issue.
