Wow! Today I bought the Apple A2119 adapter. Now I can select the HiDPI resolution of 3008 x 1692. But more importantly: the LG OLED 48CX shows me the Mac Mini M1 with RGB output instead of YPbPr! So I am delighted! :)

The more expensive one:
- Gives you more assurance of Mac compatibility as it was "made for Mac";
- Connects with one cable while providing your Macbook with power;
- Is twice as bright;
- Has much much better colour accuracy.

I care about decent colour accuracy a lot due to photography being my hobby and my main reasons to drop Dell P2415Q is problems with Mac compatibility that has been always there (hacks needed to force RGB) and got worse with M1. That's why I've ordered the Ultrafine 4K.
I've been really tempted to go all in and buy Ultrafine 5K, it seems it's gorgeous and the only real deal Retina baring Pro XDR but to be honest but I just couldn't explain to myself spending so much on display that according to reports online might not last more than 2-3 years
So you're recommending something you don't even have? Just based on the spec? I've read reviews about the Ultrafine which suggest it is not as good as you think . . . I'm happy to be proved wrong though. Incidentally Apple no longer sells this display in the UK.

In previous post in which I was listing available options for Retina-like displays (very scarce!) I was quite straightforward to point out that I own and intend to replace Dell P2415Q (it is a good display but does not play well with Macs; with M1 Macs even hacks to make it up work correctly with RGB signal don’t work anymore).
The list of differences you’ve quoted was a list of spec-based differences that justify price difference between two displays with the same resolution. My point was that there’s definitely some Apple tax in that price difference but there are also important objective spec differences that justify sizeable chunk and of it.

I’m very much aware of Ultrafine reviews and the problems that people experienced with those monitors. It seems to me that there is agreement that those are great displays with quality control problems. Additionally, some of those problems apparently are just usual LG problems. Moreover, given number of reports I’d say that 24” Ultrafine 4K does not seem to be affected as much and Ultrafine 5K first generation was the worst offender.

Nevertheless, I’m sorry if you had an impression I’m recommending from experience.

What I appreciate is that we have all contributed points that could help anyone who might be considering either of these two LG 24" hi-res monitors. It's buried in a thread about something else, but people can still find it with a search.

We should start a wiki thread for listing compatible monitors and settings to make them work, issues noticed, etc.

What connection do you use?
I used Ugreen HDMI to connect via Apple A1621 adapter and still YPbPr color. :(

@jkirchgessner07 - I can confirm that your fix is working for me!!!!!

Even with my old Dell U2415 (1080p monitor), I am seeing

a) Extremely pleasing fonts
b) Great Black on white characters in programs like Excel
c) Nice sharpness on web browsers

The font-sharpness looks reasonably close to that of my windows laptop. I will probably upgrade to a 4K monitor, but amazingly, the overall display is acceptable to me even with the current setup !!!!!!!

Sure, the YPBPR problem persists, but hey, the fonts have made a HUGE, HUGE difference, and whatever minor blur remains is likely on account of the PPI being in the 90ish range on my monitor. In any case, my eye-strain is gone!

Here is my setup, and the steps I executed:

1) M1 Macbook Air, now on Big Sur 11.2
2) Connected via USB-C to DisplayPort Cable to the Dell U2415
3) In Dell OSD : Display > DP 1.2 > Enable
4) My monitor also offers Colors > Gamma > MAC, in the OSD, which made quality of blacks & whites better.

Even though Input Colour still says YPBPR, and I personally feel the overall colours are a bit unsaturated; it's maybe a 10-15 % complaint - nothing dramatic.

Incidentally, I was trawling a large number of reviews and forums post @jkirchgessner07 's update, and I found a guy who got great results with a cable from the brand CHOETECH (USB-C to Displayport capable of driving 4k @ 60Hz). I got the same cable, and couldn't be happier with the results

@aednichols @Sarpanch - perhaps you would like to also check with a USB-C to DP cable and the above settings?

Cheers!

My LG 27UK850-W looks to be receiving the proper signal over USB-C using Apple's Thunderbolt 3 cable after the 11.2 update. I have a second, identical monitor that I need to test now.

Hmm, I thought this setting would set the Gamma to 1.8, which Apple hasn’t used in ages. MacOS switched to 2.2 aligning with Windows a very long time ago. I’m surprised it’s even still an option to be honest.

My P2721Q ships with 1.2 enabled by default with a fallback to 1.1. I'll try the other things tonight though.

Dell doesn't officially support Macs and I'm not surprised they haven't kept up to date.

The stated purpose of YPbPr mode in the Dell manual is portable DVD players that only output that format. Those haven't been common in many years.

Can I delete the color profiles for my LG UL600 in the display options to have the MacBook reset to default somehow? I've got multiple profiles now listed but I've never done anything to change them within MacOS.
