Hello @itsphilgeorge

did that cable work for you. I just bought Delock Bidirectional USB Type-C™ to DisplayPort Cable (DP Alt Mode) 8K 60 Hz 1.5 m DP 8K certified and it does not work. I tried it with 3 monitors LG 34WK95U, LG 27UK850-W and a Dell 27". M1 can't detect the screen :-/
Here there! No, it didn't fix it at all. I am now submitting support requests to LG and attempting to force a firmware update using a Windows machine.

I expect nothing will resolve this.

At least the cable works for you. My one does not even detect the display on my MacBook Pro

Before you do the firmware update I would recommend checking my post https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-and-lg-34wk95u-sleep-wake-up-issues.2276874/

I also submitted the case to LG back in Dec. Still waiting for the tech support answer though ...

Thanks! I had read your post and still decided to upgrade as I wanted to check with the new cable using DisplayPort 1.4

I also just updated to 11.2 Beta 2 with the hope that Apple had addressed it as suggested in their Support article. No such luck.

Since the firmware update, the screen does appear to be detected more quickly. It will be interesting to see if the wake issues remain.

I hope they adress soon the following bugs:
- the wake up issues
- the max. possible resolution on m1
- bug in AppKit Framework on M1. NSScreenNumber is set to 1 instead of the actual id - (until this bug is not adressed, the 'monitor control' software will not work with the M1 devices

Hello,

I have very similar problems.

I attached an external 34" UHWD Screen. Everything is fine except the Fonts. Writings and letters etc. are really hard to see and blurred (see attached files).
Tried like everything I could find around the internet. Hope you guys can help! Thank you so much in advance.

Best regards

Looks like RC2 is out now for 11.2 and at least I don't see any changes regarding the UI scaling with the LG Ultrawide.

@itsphilgeorge did you have any notable changes in the last updates?

I thought they would be quicker fixing that issue as they already acknowledged it publicly and it also seems to affect Pro Display XDR and many other HiRes Displays.

Unfortunately looks like we will have to wait for 11.3 at least to get this fixed.

The only noticeable changes for me are less random Bluetooth disconnections and less Black Screen events and random crashes from wake. But that is only over 24 hours, so I will withhold judgement on those.

It is so insignificant to Apple to resolve these issues. It is only impacting power users which they no longer focus on as they are a consumer company. I don't expect it to be fixed.

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing but I'm quite sure that missing UI scales is by no means a power user problem and also this:

I agree with you and am aware of the proposal to fix it.

My concern is around Apple never really supporting higher resolutions than what it deems optimal.

For example, the XDR, which is clearly a power user piece of hardware, does not allow for resolutions higher than 3008 on Intel or M1 hardware. To me, that is insane, but the XDR users don't seem to mind. This makes me think it is an edge-case issue.

I thought I would drop this here: LG just released OnScreen Control 4.48. It is not Apple Silicon fat binary but at least it works on Big Sur and detects my 34wk95u and previous 4.40 did not.

Back in the Catalina days, this software helped to resolve res and wakeup issues so maybe worth trying.

Mac_OSC_4.48.zip
OMG!!! Thank you!

I installed Big Sur 11.2, installed the OnScreen Control, it prompted me to update my 5k2k firmware and now everything is working as I wanted - both the 3008x1269 and 5120x2160 resolutions appeared. (I am using just the Thunderbolt cable provided with the display, no Displayport dongles)

No more blurry screen! I LOVE YOU! :)

Good to hear that @The-Aviator,

just one question. Does the monitor wake up correctly when the lid is closed?

Oh, that one... unfortunately... is still not fixed for me.
I am with Air and every time I have to smash buttons on the keyboard, open/close the lid and plug/unplug the cable to make it turn on the external monitor.

Helmi, I see that we are having the same issue... Mac Mini M1 with a 5120 × 2160 screen 😑

Question: Does your Mac Mini M1 run your LG 34WK95U-W at 3840 x 1620 scaled?

I see in your attachment that your Big Sur 1.12 display options now includes 5120 × 2160, just wondering what happens if you select it?

Thanks.

Confirmed. I get this and system panics resulting in a total reboot.

@BigFade For all M1 machines, the best anyone has got at the moment is 5120x2160 Native or 3008x1269 Scaled.

I am currently running my Macbook Air M1 with the LG 34WK95U-W @ 3008x1269 Scaled with the following issues:

Intermittent failure to wake from sleep - Requires lid to be opened to wake (Intermittently crashes even then)
Intermittent incorrect resolution on wake - Resets to what appears to be 3440x1440 native.
Intermittent kernel panic on sleep/wake - System resets and then required lid to be opened to view boot screen.

To my knowledge, no-one has been able to successfully enable 3840x1620 scaled resolution. (Which was available previously on Intel Mac's)

Current State of Affairs:

I have updated to Big Sur 11.2 (With fixes regarding external displays in Release Notes)
I have installed the latest firmware using the LG OnScreen control tool. (Supplied by @xszuflax)
I have purchased 2x Apple Thunderbolt 3 Pro Cables
I have contacted the developer of SwitchResX who has confirmed that SwitchResX does not allow the creation of custom resolutions on Apple M1 machines.
I have reported the issue to Apple who has now closed my support case stating that this is "intended functionality"

Despite Apple acknowledging the issue, they are yet to provide a fix. The most recent release notes of 11.3 Developer Beta makes no mention of external display issues.

I advise all who read this and want it fixed to report their issues in full to Apple Feedback.

@itsphilgeorge Solid post, Phil — thank you.

Looks like I'm going back to my iMac.
Considering most people are experiencing multiple crashes a day in this configuration, I refuse to accept it.

There is no way this is an acceptable outcome for people using external monitors and Thunderbolt 3.

So I am going to begin a new support case with Apple and see where I can get.

I'll update with progress here.

For me (mac mini m1, 34wk95u-w latest firmware and original tb cable, big sur 11.2) the problems are:

1) no resolutions between 3008 and 5120
2) the monitor (seems at random) 'wakes up' even with the mac in stop or with monitor off
(black image but on)

Exactly the same issues that I am having.

I ask that you report the issues using Apple Feedback to help get traction on the resolution we seek.

I am now on 11.3 Beta 1. (macbook Air 16GB/1TB, 34wk95u-w latest firmware and original tb cable)
No problem has been solved - I am still having:
- the wake up issues
- the max. possible resolution on m1 in HiDPI is still 3008x1269
- bug in AppKit Framework on M1. NSScreenNumber is set to 1 instead of the actual id - (until this bug is not adressed, the 'monitor control' software will not work with the M1 devices

All the problems have been reported to Apple...

Somehow this is becoming frustrating - not the greatest user experience so far... I am seriously thinking about getting back to my Intel-Mac...

So I actually have this monitor, though I don't have a M1 Macbook. I used it with an eGPU setup with a 2018 13" Macbook Pro over a year ago, and I discovered that the LG Monitor failed to communicate to MacOS or something, and MacOS subsequently was unable to detect it and generate the right .plist file for it.

Anyways, for missing resolutions, maybe this fix will work ?

Last year I was able to figure out a fix where you could generate the correct .plist file using a .plist generator webtool someone had made, and I don't know if it applies to the m1 Macs specifically, and also have no idea if this is the exact thing people are having issues with here, but if someone wants to try it's worth a shot. I ended up stumbling on this MacRumors thread because I have an M1 Air on order and this monitor is already sitting on my desk. Not gonna lie, kinda upsetting to see this monitor is still so problematic (haven't used it for the past 9 months) and was hoping it was slated to be a smooth experience after it's been out for this long.

I documented my fix here: https://egpu.io/forums/postid/58536/

Keep in mind this was an issue I resolved over a year ago, I don't know if this is still a problem that exists or if this is the problem that you guys are all experiencing. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if that's the missing piece people are having here, but it'd be disappointing that LG/Apple haven't resolved it after this long. You'll also have to reapply this fix every time you do a MacOS update.

If no one is able to give this a shot, my M1 Air arrives this Friday and I'll give it a go and report back.

Wake issues:

Unfortunately, one thing I can add is that this monitor has always had wake up issues all the way back to when I used Mojave. It has to be something on LG's end that either isn't solvable via firmware update or they're simply unwilling to solve it. I don't think Apple is the entire reason, if any reason at all, that this monitor has had such interoperability issues with MacOS.
