Just for comparison I use my iMac 8 hours a day and it will last me 10 years just like my previous iMac. That is the kind of longevity I expect from my technological purchases, although I understand that with phones we upgrade more oftenly.

iPad Pro M1 Owners: Are you going to upgrade?

I am thinking of upgrading but am wondering if battery life will be improved or not for the 11 inch, mine is not good vs the older 12.9 2020 model and is less than a year old. So I would want the 13 inch but it is really more than i wanted to spend. The m2 13 air might be a better solution but no promotion. Think I'll wait for the reviews and also check in store. The lighter weight of the m4 is appealing though!
I could be wrong, but my gut feeling is that with the move from Intel to Apple silicon, you might find it more difficult to keep your Macs for 10 years, due to the impossibility to upgrade the RAM/storage and the larger gap there seems to be between each generation vs Intel stuff.
Leaning toward staying put (11" M1). I don't care about the front camera position, and I'm on the fence about whether or not the improved screen would really benefit me. Having to buy a new Pencil is also something I'd not be thrilled about. Psychologically, knowing that the 256gb model has a hobbled CPU (3 performance cores) is hard to get past as well... yes, I realize this is a superficial concern, something I wouldn't notice if I didn't read about it, and it's probably faster than the M1's 4 performance cores, but it still rubs me the wrong way.
I was able to get a 12.9 M1 with 1TB and 5G last year at Best Buy for $1199.99. Crazy deal, but regardless of that, Apple silicon is too good. M1 should handle my needs for a few more years, and Mini-LED has been great in my eyes. OLED may be better, but the price jump and lack of additional blockbuster features is not enough for me to pay so much more to upgrade.
Following up...I just sold my 12.9 M1 Pro and everything today. I wasn't using it much because I've been using my MBP a lot more. I was going back and forth between selling or not but finally decided on it.
I figure I'd go ahead and get the most out of it and when the new iPads go on sale I may pick one up...or not.
I prefer larger 16:10 screens I think and even 14" makes a big difference. Plus it's only 0.5 pounds heavier when I travel and much more useful. Also when I only take the iPad, although it's better for the plane and chilling in bed, I always feel a little limited. I don't need to necessarily work from a computer, but I like the ability to tinker when desired.
If I do buy an M4 OLED, it will be the 11" I think. 12.9" is too close to my MBP and the only reason I bought it in 2021 was for MiniLED.
I have the M1 and I won't be upgrading. Sure the new screen is nice but it's not enough for me to upgrade. Plus the economy isn't great. I've cut down on spending and these iPads are just a luxury product to me since iPadOS hasn't really improved in years.
I’m hoping the latest iPadOS and these new iPads will get the “Charging Optimization” feature of the iPhones. This feature—when turned on—allow me to only charge my device to 80%.
My point was more that changing a keyboard isn’t a small deal. There are people still using their ancient Apple keyboard with their modern Mac’s since you can plug it in or go Bluetooth and keep that muscle memory.
The new keyboard form factor hasn’t changed. Nor has the mechanism. Apple should make the accessories last as long as possible for professionals.
But Apple is trying too hard to boost revenue by mandating rebuying all of the accessories on an upgrade.
That isn’t as painful on the iPhone where they make you buy a new $50 case if you’re a case person. But a $250 keyboard isn’t a “cheap” purchase. That’s an investment.
I say that sincerely as my HHKB was cheaper and it is an investment. Just like any other mechanical top end keyboard.
Especially since keyboards themselves aren’t changing all that much… They are the most stable part of the computer experience that has endured the longest.

I would then need to try sell this, and then there’s the new accessories outlay, Pencil, Logitech Keyboard (when released) and a screen protector, that’s already an extra £300 on top, plus extra to make up the new iPad difference.
I checked my battery health for my M1 which is sitting at 88%, fine for a purchase on April 2022
The M1 chip for my needs is still going very much strong.

The iPad is still just a hardware iPad, but the software really needs pushed more to use the power of what is available…and it just doesn’t do it. The iPads are so overpowered and will never use what’s available.

I WANT TO, but no. I must resist new-gen temptation.
Truth is, for me today even a base iPad would work.
But when I bought my M1 12.9" Pro it was the only game in town as far as that size, and I wanted the nicer screen, more RAM and storage (16GB 1TB), as it was meant to be a laptop replacement (which didn't quite work out - I bought an M2 MBA I LOVE).
That said, I'm STILL amazed at how light mine is for its size, so I better stay THE HELL out of the Apple Store...

PS: I wish Apple made a standalone kickstand for all iPads like what they make for the base iPad (as part of their keyboard folio or whatever).

I use the below, the kick stand is fantastic and best I’ve ever used, and then you have a snap on keyboard.

I am upgrading both the 11 inch (for the wife) and 12.9 inch to the new M4 versions, primarily for the OLED screen because the blooming was terrible on the 12.9. The decrease in weight is also something I am curious about because you can definitely feel the weight of the 12.9, so it being lighter is a positive for me. Being thinner is also a benefit but these devices were already slim so don't think it'll make that much of a difference (and I was already worried about durability). And with edu pricing and trades it made the decision much easier.

I believe it's a mechanical keyboard. I'm rocking a K2 Keychron Keyboard... good enough for me, I prefer not to dive into the deep world of mechanical keyboards.
