Has anyone on the internet tested the USB-C transfer speed for the M2?

On the M1 the USB-C ports are limited to either 5GB or 10GB unless they are connected over Thunderbolt. Also on the M1, the USB speeds were lower than Intel Macs in general, I am curious to see if Apple fixed the USB speed issue.

M2 mbp/air should be limited to 10gbps as well as it uses usb 3.1 gen 2
on Thunderbolt 3 and usb 4 it would be 40gbps
does not support 3.2 gen 2 or 3.2 gen 2x2

Apple will probably use one chip for that capacity in all current production regardless of model. It is cheaper for them.
Yeah I think that's likely. Or they're saving the 128GB NAND chips for that machine, since it's more the "flagship" one they want to show off. Definitely curious to see how the MacBook Air compares.

Apple sent all big name reviewers higher capacity storage and ram option to make their laptops look good. The verge got 1tb ssd version and it performed on par with the previous m1 version. Average user would go on youtube, checkout their favorite reviewer like verge or cnet etc and be wowed and end up buying a base model machine from amazon/retail from the pre-made SKUs which he probably will never notice it runs significantly slower. Apple wins, big name reviewers win, average customer wont know what happened, pros get the 14inch m1 pro/max version, and prosumers loose.
only hope is that lower speeds are a software bug and could be fixed with a software update even with a single nand.

Another reason to just buy the 14" MBP. Why the hell does the basic M2 MBP even exist?!?!
So Apple can have a quick and cheap to produce intermediate model, as shown how the M2 MBP is readily in stock while the 14” MBP are still on back orders for some, and I have a feeling that the M2 MBA might be facing similar thing (new production design, not up in volume, etc). Right now, Apple can still catch some sales off fomo people who must have an M2 right now with the M2 MBP. It’s a business strategy for Apple’s pocket.

There is no shortage of NAND. Let's not be sheep.

Wow, a lot to do about nothing, so they added 1 chip instead of two .. global shortage/design or optimization who cares, anyone that's going to really care's about this will probably go for 16GB + 512/1TB ... don't really see the plus on the Pro Base v Air Base .. except battery life

Reading the comments here makes it sound like the world has gone to pots just because of 1 chip instead of two, any manufacturer (Not using Standard COTS Drives... most Wintel Boxes), would look to reduce BOM costs and simplify the supply chain I'm sure

Could be as simple as OEM does not offer 128Gb chips anymore ...

Sure, meanwhile the Apple Store will happily ship any customer a 128GB iPhone SE or iPhone 11 the next business day.
Different form factor…old supply contract. That’s not how this works I’m afraid. Can’t just take a Chip and plug it in here. In many cases the EOL of some products are based on Availability. Like I why can’t you buy a wintel box with only Win10 installed you could buy it 3 years ago that way

Of course they can. Do you seriously think Apple, well know for having the best supply chain management in the world, turns like the Titanic?

We’ve seen Apple move chips from iPad to feed iPhone. Late 2021 and early 2022 we saw iPads with 50-60 days lead time.

Same thing happened when I bought my Surface Book 2 at the end of 2017. Had been reading reviews here and there, all had been sent 1TB versions, though and they were superfast . I ended up buying the 256GB (i7) version as part of a deal and it was atrocious. Things only got better when it was suggested here on MR I buy a Samsung T5 external SSD and work off that. I ended up selling the SB2 early 2020. Hardly ended up using it because of the SSD issue. I’m saddened to see that Apple is following in MS’s footsteps in this instance.

This is really sad... I thought with the transition to Apple Silicon, that Apple didn't want to give anymore bullets to their competitors, but this is quite a serious one. People can really lose confidence and start to become cautious with these kind of moves.

Luckily for Apple, storage performance is always under the shadow of Graphics and Computing performance, and people outside of the Apple communities like MacRumors won't really know.

Don't you need to know the Queue Depth for the BlackMagic test in order to compare them?
Good point, I forgot to mention that. I had considered Blackmagic as QD1, based on the AmorphousDiskMark FAQ:

Q: How about Blackmagic Disk Speed Test?
A: Blackmagic Disk Speed Test only runs sequential 5400 KiB (0x546000 bytes = 5529600 bytes = 5400 x 1024 bytes) block read/write tests. If you are only interested in a particular scenario (the data transfer rate your storage device/controller/interface can achieve from a single-threaded sequential read/write), there is nothing wrong with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. With NVMe SSD devices, a single-threaded sequential read/write typically cannot achieve the best performance of the device.

I think you underestimate. The standard retail configuration for non-Apple resellers is the 256GB. Which means all those stocked/bought at Best Buy, Nebraska Furniture Mart and similar is what the majority of people end up with.
Yup.

I just bought an Air M1 base model 8/256 GB from Costco for my SO. It ended up costing right around $800 total with discounts from using their credit card and exec membership extras.

Quite happy that it's clicking off 2261 MB/s Write and 2769 MB/s Read :)

The last (10th gen) Intel Air and Pro 13" models were far different in I/O performance (Pro was inline with benchmarks above and Air came in at roughly half that performance!).

looks like it's physics sadly ,it's almost exactly half the speed of double nand .SW won't fix that I'm afraid
