ok, that's a very legitimate point which I agree with 100% (was an avid vi/vim user myself) - however, that means you had one of the older touchbar models before they added a physical escape key back to the keyboard. kinda dumb they ever thought a virtual ESC key would be a good idea, but at least they corrected it later on... 😮
My problem was that I have a habit of subconsciously resting a finger of my left hand above the top row of physical keys, which means I kept accidentally pressing the first key on the touchbar...

That would suck as I’m now thinking about getting a super cheap base M1 MBA from resellers (way cheaper than from Apple directly).

"way cheaper"?! That's intriguing. Which resellers and price are you referring to? I may want to get myself one. How do they compare to Apple's educational pricing -- which is $100 less than normal and, with back-to-school promo, comes with $150 gift card.

The retail discounts I've seen are typically on base models and, often, are less than $100. When spending upwards of a $1,000 or more on a Mac, that doesn't seem "way cheaper" -- simply a bit cheaper! And, no match for educational pricing with the back-to-school promotion.

It always cracks me up with MacRumors reports "lowest price ever on X" and links (probably 95%+ of the time to an Amazon sale) that is limited to one particular model, color, and base RAM, and can be as little as $70 off! 😎

Jealous that I can buy a M1 MBA for a much bigger discount than $100 from a huge local computer store here?

And as I mentioned before in an other thread, for privacy reasons I am not going to post local stores here online.

All you need to know is, if I end up with a M1 MBA in the end, it is because I got it with a huge discount.

Correct. Most people buy the cheapest configuration and try to live with it even though it's not practical enough. And then they face all kinds of limitations and keep trying to talk themselves into believing that's it's acceptable, even the smarter choice because they "saved" money and they could use cloud storage etc. It's really Apple's fault but people shouldn't make themselves accept it.
To be honest for my personal machine 256GB is fine, I don't keep all my music on disk anymore, while my old files are on my NAS and on icloud I mostly stream these days, I don't download much media because I mostly stream these days, icloud's file offload means it can optimize storage space as needed, and that includes my photos and such.

About the only thing that takes up a lot of space is games, and it's not like folks really game all that much on macs, I have a windows machine for most of that.

And I'm a professional (FWIW my *work* MBP has a 1TB disk, plus I have externals to stick large disk images I need once in a while, but I don't need that on my personal laptop). The average user has plenty of space free with a 256GB drive, and even more if they use a cloud service for things like photos and videos, like google drive or icloud.

Does someone have a more information about how SSD cache works ? (4:39 minute)

Maxtech clear more space on SSD and speed was dramatically better.

What about the read/write speed on the M2 Ultra processors – anyone who checked that yet?

The whole issue only affects M2 Macs with 256GB storage. The Ultras are only available with 512GB up.
Thanks, but I wasn't thinking about what MaxTech brought up back then … they have posted misleading stuff several times. I asked because I wonder if the new M2 Ultra processors in the new Mac Pro and Mac Studio models perform better (in terms of read/write speed) than other Macs.
