My sigs a little old :) I have a 3.1ghz i7 from 2017. And to your quote. I maxxed that out at the time.
I'm in the exact same boat. 3.1ghz i7 from 17. It still runs fine, just freeze once in a while. I definitely will upgrade this time, just not sure 16" 30 or 38.

I think 32-inch instead of 16 or 30 will be fine too but of course 38 is better.

Those videos a few post above are interesting. Apparently these Max machines are very quiet. And even though the review I saw was for the 16 inch, I would say this applies to the 14 inch (you need to watch the video).

It just seems that way, but I'm confident enough to buy one now knowing that I can return it.

For anyone in this boat, watch the second video a few posts back. In a nutshell, what the guy's test results showed was that these run very hot not letting the fans make noise or the performance decrease. This might not sit well for some, but I don't mind this as long as it's not noisy. Will it burn out quicker? I'm going to gamble it wont become an issue.

Yes they are or at least the 30 core seems ok.
It did not go over 91-92 degrees and about 1500 rpm fans while watching youtube and running a 7 min 30 sec render in blender.

I need to hear some fan stories about the new 14" Max before I buy one. My M1 14" could get loud. So either they have tweaked the whole thing (possible), or there might be some noise.

30 core gpu, sounds noisy on paper, but I'm sure it turns on what's needed. But then again, I'm not assuming anything.

I have yet to either hear the fans on my 14" or even feel air being pushed out of the machine by the fans. Compared to my M1 13" Pro, this machine seems to run quieter and cooler at this time. In fact, I just ran a Cinebench R23 single and multicore test, and noticed no fan noise at all. The only parts of the keyboard that even got "warm" were the 6, T, and Y keys. Specifically, that center section is shorter on the M2 than the M1.

These Youtubers opened it up and saw that the cooling system was not beefed up at all in the 14 inch and later on there’s another video of the 16 inch also was not beefed up.

There are some clearly visible differences between the two cooling systems even in those thumbnails though. Specifically, the center stack is shorter on the M2 than the M1 model. How that translates into actual cooling efficiency/performance is another question entirely.

The thermal max/TDP must be higher for these machines than for most CPUs, based on those numbers. Most desktop-class CPUs have a TDP of roughly 89-90C, sometimes up to 94C. Mobile parts tend to have a lower TDP because of limited cooling capability. For these parts to be capable of running almost 20C hotter without triggering fans at full force (a point at which most Intel/AMD systems would automatically shut down as a precaution), there has to be some "special sauce" under the hood, either in passive cooling, type of solder used to attach components to the logic board, etc.

Again, talking about M2 14" Max, not the Pro. The weight increase is for the Max chip just as it is for the 16" M1/M2 Max.

Hey folks, I'm new here as I have just purchased my first (personal) MacBook - 14" M2 Max (30 core) 32GB ram, 1TB ssd. I just ran the Geekbench 6.0 test in both low power mode and normal power. My normal power mode score was a lot higher than what others have posted here and I was wondering why that might be? I did not even close any applications and actually had a YouTube video running in the background when running the tests. I'm going to try closing everything and running it again to see if there's an improvement.

EDIT closed everything except for Geekbench and got the highest single core score so far: 2680
