I've seen a top secret apple document for all the upcoming OSes. It'll run...

10.0 "Cheetah"
10.1 "Puma"
10.2 "Jaguar"
10.3 "Panther"
10.4 "Tiger"
10.5 "Leopard"
10.6 "Snow Leopard"
10.7 "Lion"
10.8 "Mountain Lion"
10.9 "Grrrrrr!, Just Grrrrr!"

Then it'll be...

11.0 "Poodle"
11.1 "Scotty"
11.2 "Terrier"
11.3 "Chiuhauhau"
11.4 "Sausage"
11.5 "Sheepdog"
11.6 "Dalmation"
11.7 "Pitt Bull"
11.8 "Rottweiler"
11.9 "Wolf"

They haven't decided on the 12.x's yet.

Apparently there's gonna be some unbelieveable things in OS11 Sausage....

Yes, but I don't know if they would offer it for a purchase this far out (if December is your target release month).

I doubt it'll be more than $79 anyway........ Snow Leopard was $29, BTW.

More like $129 for retail. That's been the model for all releases so far. Snow Leopard was so cheap because it's an optimized version of Leopard (hence the name).

There's no chance in hell that the next version of Mac OS X will be released anytime soon.

So Windows works on all computer basically, but OS X only on the next gen models.

Pretty lame if it won't be compatible with the current gen Macbook pro's.

I seriously doubt the veracity of that claim. Snow Leopard was Intel only simply because there was no point in continuing to support PPC hardware.

2011

Before Christmas 2011 would be my guess. So yes.

I just recently bought this MacBook Pro.

Has Apple ever offer special pricing for those who just bought their new Apple computer from the last 2-3 months purchase date for the release date of OSX Lion 10.7?

Well, I disagree

Actually, Snow Leopard broke a ton of drivers (many printer ones) causing many 3rd party items not to function properly. Very Vista of them IMHO

I'm not sure how they relate SL to vista at all. They were two completely different things. Vista was a complete overhaul of the windows operating system, while SL was just a large maintenance/optimization of Leopard (hence the $30 price tag). Those are two completely different animals.

Also, you already can run windows 7 64-bit on a mac (in fact I am doing it currently on an "unsupported" model)

OSX 10.8 is confirmed to be Kitty. OSX 10.9 is confirmed to be Domestic house cat. Trust me on this guise.

Snow Leopard was somewhat of a distraction for Microsoft-They were trying to extinguish the hype of 7 so they did this while they worked on Lion/10.7.

I would say all your points are safe bets. I don't think the OS will run more than $129 (except in "box set/family pack" form). However, seeing as how Snow Leopard was a under the hood upgrade, I do see "Lion" (if so named) being a full new OS (UI/performance rework) and thus justifying the $129 price tag common to Apple for such a release.

Disclaimer: Of course no one but Apple knows these things conclusively at this point though...

Agreed about the price tag-I hope it's priced at $99 though. Sounds more attractive than $129, but it's good how it's unlimited installs so restoring OSes is easy, unlike Windows.

Do you think that the older MacBook Pros (Core 2 Duos) might be at a disadvantage for this OS? Because it's quite a big gap between the Core i5/7s and Apple would want to take advantage of the processor and graphical capabilities of the newer MacBook Pros, so the UI might be slower in the older ones.

you think Apple just slapped together an OS update just because of 7? I think not. these things are planned well in advance.

no. there is not "quite a big gap" between Core 2 and Nehalem/Westmere, for starters. second, any large performance advances Apple wants to make will use the GPU – notice how Apple has insisted on giving all of its computer at least a decent (i.e. not Intel) GPU, even though not everyone needs it, and even 10.6 barely takes advantage of it (if at all) despite all the hype around OpenCL.

but I doubt 10.7 will require much higher specs just to run smoothly. PPC Macs run 10.5 just fine. their limitations are from CPU-intensive tasks, which running an OS is not.

Yes, actually. I'm quite sure that the brilliant minds within the Apple HQ had thought of excellent ideas and features for the OS.

It probably originally was supposed to all come out in 10.6, but because of the delay of the Marble interface, they probably shipped most of the good/new features to 10.7, while they did the new Exposé and the other system architectural improvements to SL.

They probably wanted to build up all their forces and beat Windows 8 when 10.7 comes out.

There are many rumors that the new version of OS X will not be compatible with current computers. It will be released early next year and only be available as pre-installed on all the new redesigns (macbook/pro, iMac). :(

When Apple had the chance to dominate the PC world, SJ did that (i think with the LISA) and Apple relegated itself to that 4% market for years.

If they do it again, then it means Apple is becoming stupid again.

It wasn't Windows that almost killed Apple, it was Apple itself.

Resolution independence (1280x800 currently looks just horrible on the 13" MB and MBP)

I'm assuming that you mean things are too big? Resolution independence is all about making this bigger on high-resolution screens. Making things smaller to get more space won't work very well.

[gasps!] Do you realize what you just wrote?

Edit your post and then run and hide under the bed until Apple fixs the 13" MBP.

only thing I've heard is that it might only work on a 64-but EFI, since Apple's obviously working towards a completely 64-bit OS...but just about everything Apple's released since 2007 has 64-bit EFI anyway..

I'd bet more 64 bit cpu than efi, none other than 64 bit efi would kill a number of fuly 64 bit capable machines, including the original core 2 MB, MBP, and Minis and the '06 MP, which is still a faster machine than a few general consumer machines apple currently ships. There's no reason not to include those comps, and if apple somehow does drop them, I'm sure that something like xpostfacto will show up to allow installing Lion :)

Dont forget the C2D Macbooks From 07 with the GMA950 which is pretty far from decent... and the X3100's from 2008...

10.7 Aqua gone?

Let's hope. Way overdue those clunky blue buttons/ UI elements are being replaced by something more sleek.

I actually quite like the dark theme from Ubuntu 10.10 but know Apple can make it look better.

I'm quite happy with the way 10.6 responds on my i5 iMac. I'm sure Apple will give us a faster OS, more advanced GCD, improved Time Machine, refined Stacks and Finder and new iChat with FaceTime

I'm just hoping that the dull looks of iTunes 10 isn't an indicator of future UI design. Guess we'll find out on Wednesday...

I hate the grey icons in iTunes 10 and find it ironic that the new icon is more colourful than the old one.

BTW : I love aqua; but, yes, it need a update maybe to make it more slick and cool looking.

Aqua was nice when it came out but yes it's time for a sleek look.

But what look can we see instead of the blue scrollbar? Well I believe it will resemble the iPad scrollbar, which hides and when you scroll it reappears as a thin sleek grey/black bar moving up and down.

I never use the blue scrollbar to move up and down, nor the arrows. I use my magic mouse touch input to scroll up and down. Everyone seems to do so too.

So what I think will happen is they will save up pixels to the right by removing the scrollbar of.. say.. Safari.

Also the 3 buttons on top will probably be like iTunes 10. I like it because it makes the top window border smaller. Which is always a good thing.

They won't. iTunes has never been an indicator of OS X design.

Moreover, iTunes only showed "iTunes" in the top bar. Other apps show stuff (For example, my Firefox window is showing "Mac Forums - Reply to Topic", and Finder windows show the folder name) which is important. They can not get rid of it like they did in iTunes.

Lastly, people have whined so much about this, I highly doubt they will use vertical buttons.

What could the new OS Lion have?

It always seems to work this way: I don't know that I wanted it, until apple comes out with it. But seriously, I have no ideas on what Lion could have. What do you all think?

-Resolution independence would be a huge plus when working with displays of different dimensions.

-Get rid of the ugly blue scroll bars, make them nice. Or no more scroll bars, actually. Mice have scroll wheels, trackpads have two-finger gestures.

-Growl to be installed by default, and then make it an official API so that more developpers, including Apple, use it.

-Cut and paste in the Finder.

-Major UI revamp.

My wishlist:

- Better graphics drivers, and drivers updates, more often.
- an improved finder with tabs.
- More customization options.
- TRIM support for SSD's.
- Quicktime support and hardware acceleration for mkv.
