MP 1,1-5,1 Mac OS 11.3 has broken support for older Mac Pros

Further on the installation of 11.3 on a Parallels virtual machine. I can confirm that creating a NEW virtual machine works, although I had to reset the machine once, as the initial installation just froze up. Something I've noticed is that my Parallels 11.1.2 VM was using an 80GB virtual disk, but it seems version 11.3 won't run on anything less than 256GB (?). Other than that, everything seems to work.

If the above experience is indicative of anything, it would appear that updating a prior 11.1.2 installation is fraught with difficulty, as opposed to an installation from scratch, which seems more likely to succeed with little effort.

Another data point -

Updated from 11.2.3 to 11.3 successfully only after clearing slots 3 and 4 (Slot 3 was already empty but slot 4 had a Sonnet USB-C 2-port card). As soon as I reinstalled the USB-C card, the system started freezing at boot.

Cold/Warm boots are normal including shutdowns (7 tries).

Edit: Looking at the NVRAM after the failed boot with the card installed in slot 4, I noticed 2 new entries

Hmmm.. On the 10th try, I got the same error message on login "You shut down your computer because of a problem" after a normal shutdown and when restarting again, the cMP froze half way through with slots 3/4 being free.

I'm beginning to suspect there's a timing issue with hardware initialization as I noticed that after OC loads and immediately selecting the macOS drive, the progress bar loads up to ~5% but if I wait for 5 seconds (oc setting) and let OC load the default drive, it either loads fully or half way through the progress bar after which the system halts (startup error/stop sign).

Strange though how it worked without issues through the 7 tries I attempted.

So far, it's a hit or miss with slots 3/4 free and no loading whatsoever with a card in slot 4. I'll fiddle with it more later tonight.

Out of pure curiosity I tried a clean install of 11.3, only having a sata ssd, the target disk carrying OC in SATA bay one, a mojave spinner in sata bay 4 and the GPU in the macpro. After the first boot, the installer hung. I tried once more but there was no difference. Thus I am back to 11.2.3. 11.3 is too 'capricious" and "quirky" for the time being.

Not sure if this matters, but tries 8 and 9 were spent on reintroducing the USB-C card into slot 4 with boot failure on both tries.

I'm sure we'll figure it out at some point.. for now though, I've lost USB-C support and will avoid unnecessary restarts/shutdowns.. Everything else works.

OWC Accelsior S SATA-3 PCIe 2.0 card. It's a SATA SSD, not NVMe, or AHCI - slot 4.

So you don't have the same NVMe+card setup as myself. I remember that another person running the same NVMe+HighPoint 7101A setup had no issues upgrading. Syba SI-PEX40129 shares the same chip as HighPoint 7101A. I was wondering if anyone else is running NVMes on these cards and upgraded successfully.

This is interesting. You both have the same WiFi card. So perhaps some devices are more problematic than others, with some being completely overlooked (WiFi?) and others mistakenly blamed (NVMe?).

I can't use slot 3 as the GPU is in Slot 2 and the HighPoint in Slot 1

Yes, still crashes at different points. Tonight I'm gonna remove the AirPort Extreme to see if I can get it at least more consistent with the minimum possible configuration.

P.S. one of my Mac Pros have a BCM94360CD while the other have a BCM94322MC. I don't have any BCM943602CDP cards.

Hmmm.. On the 10th try, I got the same error message on login "You shut down your computer because of a problem" after a normal shutdown and when restarting again, the cMP froze half way through with slots 3/4 being free.

I'm beginning to suspect there's a timing issue with hardware initialization as I noticed that after OC loads and immediately selecting the macOS drive, the progress bar loads up to ~5% but if I wait for 5 seconds (oc setting) and let OC load the default drive, it either loads fully or half way through the progress bar after which the system halts (startup error/stop sign).

Strange though how it worked without issues through the 7 tries I attempted.

So far, it's a hit or miss with slots 3/4 free and no loading whatsoever with a card in slot 4. I'll fiddle with it more later tonight.

Since you are testing with the same SSD7101A-1 as I am, could you please take note of the kext that is crashing?

Mine is crashing at different kexts, without any consistency that I can see, besides being PCIe related.
