I like the new look in general. But, looking at the dock with the depth it has, it seems that the icons should do more than just appear propped up--I think they themselves should have more depth. I think the new dock instantly made the Trash can the best looking icon since it really does look like it's sitting on the dock and takes up 3-dimensional space on it. The others just appear to be floating in 2D space.

Somebody's got some juicy info. I'm sticking by this guy. That sounds excellent.

Tell me this if you can- I haven't seen any full-size screen grabs- what is the texure of the menubar? ie Tiger's is kind of aqua reflective..

is it flat, or just a gradient, or kinda aqua? I overlaid a straight transparency over a similar background and it looks like the menubar is doing a little bit more than just transparency... like a screen multiply or something. Maybe I'm just crazy.

The Menubar is like 'Quartz.' (pun intended) Crystaline with an ever so slight curvature. The background behind it becomes a tiny bit magnified as a result - no, you are not crazy.

He hasn't taken anything from you

One cuts and pastes text, not files. Just because Windows mixes metaphors, don't expect Apple to.

What I would mostly like to see in Finder is a useable Cmd+X shortcut. I switched from Windows/Linux about 6 months ago and I find OS X to be simply a joy to work with. Except for file management in Finder.

I really really miss the cut/paste workflow I was used to in Explorer. It's core functionality imho, and I can't see why Steve has taken it from me.

Where's a built-in menubar mini-player mode of iTunes that is like the one in You Control or even MS WMP in Vista?

I did with my System 2008-see:

Oh-and I'm ahead of Apple:skinning built-in, vs 3rd-party for OSX.

Looks like Apple only says you can post images that have been shown publicallly.

Can we say unreadable?

The menu bar looks harder to read then in the keynote. Is it more transparent? I really hope that the transparency can be turned off.

Amen brother (or sister). Imagine having a dark image on your desktop and then you get translucent white with black text -- can we say unreadable?

I believe Steve Jobs said during the keynote that the menu bar adjusted itself depending on the background image so this would not be a problem.

iTunes becomes Finder; Finder becomes iTunes

another thing i am not sure that i like is that the finder looks ALMOST IDENTICAL to itunes. While that might be all fine and dandy i have a feeling that i might get some stuff mixed up to start. Another thing i would have liked to see in the new finder is TABS.

Can you imagine a day when iTunes is nothing more than a system service whose interface is the Finder? Finder supports Smart Folders -- iTunes supports Smart Playlists -- a Smart Folder to house all your music files, one for movies, TV shows, etc.

In an object-oriented world, there are no "files". All things are objects with basic features in common.

On the other hand, I picked up on using Expose and OSX's spring loaded folders for moving files pretty quickly. For those still keen on cutting/pasting files, there are plenty of third party tools (some free) such as Path Finder which have this sort of functionality built in.

And please don't anyone bring up the old "third party apps are no good" thing -- I haven't seen one OS yet in over 15 years of computing that couldn't benefit from some third party tools. Just because the OS developer didn't include it doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be used.

That is what you call deep thinking right there. "Ima put dat **** on Myspace" :p

Now that would make my day-plus have a WMP style minibar as a small sized version of iTunes widget would be a nice tuch.

The rounded corners on the menu bar have been around since the original Macintosh in 1984... Sad to see that iconic UI element go.

When the leopard preview came out, someone claimed that the rounded corners were still there, but that the screen capture app just wasn't recording them. Probably bs, but just passing along a possibility. If you really want to check you can watch the keynote video and see if they're there.

edit:

Upon further investigation, even the official pics don't show rounded screen corners, so I guess they really are gone. Eh, personally I don't care either way, but I suppose I'd rather have the extra few pixels of useable screen space if the choice was up to me.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean something like the mini itunes controller you get when you hit the regular green zoom button at the top left of the iTunes window?

Apple should have released Leopard in June.

Judging by what Wired said, it seems leopard is very very close to final.

Yes!

That'll be the day when Apple decides to follow Microsoft and use their monopoly to crush any possible iTunes competitor. Evil!

Stacks...

...is it me, or are some of the things Steve showed in Stacks a little counter-intuitive.

Namely, you download something, and lo it goes on the front of the stack. Sounds great.

Then you move our mouse all the way down to the dock and click on that stack, odds are you want the thing you just downloaded right? So how come, the most RECENT things on the stack fan out so that they're the FARTHEST away from the dock. I would have thought the most recent things would be the ones close to the dock and the older ones would be farther away.

As it was shown it's a pretty big violation of Fitts law, because it's put the likely target a long way from the mouse (and getting further away the more items in the stack.

Plus, wouldn't it be a cool animation if the BACK of the stack fanned up and away from the dock. :)

Perhaps we'll have that kind of option. Hard to say for sure without actually using it. :)

Stacks

From what I understood there's a way to access the recently downloaded item without expanding the stack.

It's a tough decision. Since the most recent item goes on top of the stack. If you then spread out the stack the top item will be the one farthest away. It makes sense actually.
But I agree that having the most recent file at the bottom would be the most convenient way.

Very good call.

Also what happens when you have around 100 files on your desktop that you've downloaded....where does the fan go?

I think, on clicking the stack, it should show the files horizontally, half an inch above the dock in a strip (that goes full width of your screen). Click the stacks icon > move mouse up half an inch and you're at your first file. Move the mouse right and the files scroll to the left within the strip. This would mean that, on first clicking the stacks icon, you would have a mainly empty strip with a few files going to the right of your mouse visible. IF the stacks icon was to the right of the dock. If it was on the left you'd see far more files initially and it may not have to scroll.
