Still looking for good card and think I found something better locally. A Nvidia GeForce 8800GT XLR28 Performance Edition PNY, I am assuming this will work in my Mac Pro 1,1 under Mavericks and Yosemite if I install it? Do I need to do any updated or drivers? finally, since its not a flashed card am I only missing out on boot screens?

Yes an 8800GT will work, and you will not have boot screens on any non flashed card.

You shouldn't need any drivers because that card has been supported since 10.5.6, I think.

Does it matter that its the xlr28 performance edition?

Great thanks! If I get it I'll let you know how it's working with Yosemite!

Just checking though, Yosemite will use this card right?

Quick Question

I've been trying to install Mavericks onto my 1.1 that is currently on 10.6.8 using SFOTT. I have a 5770 in there for a gpu but it's been flashed so I don't get the boot screen. I tried putting in the original gpu in there, but some reason I don't see the USB drive anywhere when I hold down option, just my main boot up drive.

I tried all the usb slots I have. Any tips?

Yes, that's what I said before. The 8800GT was an optional card upgrade released later for the Mac Pro. It will fully support the QE/CI needed for Mavericks or Yosemite.

The drive isn't bootable then. Try building the installer manually instead of using SFOTT.

Cool, I would give this a shot, guessing just by following what Tiamo originally did right? I was trying to install it by using target disk drive.

Check here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1740775/. There is a guide and there are lots of post regarding trouble shooting. Target disk mode should work provided you have a supported Mac and then just replace the boot.efi files.

Thanks, sorry for having to baby me, I've just been really frustrated and tapped out on this because everywhere else I read it just works like magic. Poof, you're done, and that hasn't been my experience.

The only Nvidia card I have had issues with was a GTX 295 but that was because that is a dual GPU card and I just stuck with the GTX 285 I was already using. Every card I have had after the 8800GT has been a PC Card without issues.

For the guy buying PNY 8800GT, I would recommend looking little longer and getting an EVGA 8800GT. Thrones with Black/blue and white on fan are unique. They ALL have the 128K chip. SO they ALL can be flashed with Mac EFI.

Boot screens really make some stuff easier, and certainly less worrisome when trouble comes up.

PNY cards almost always have 64K chips and can't be flashed without surgery. They are also mor likely to die an early death.

The card seems to work and I tried Yosemite the other day. Problem being no usb's seem to work, wifi is gone and initially I was able to use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Once installing the fix to let you update the software my bluetooth is no longer in the settings....too frustrating.

Same thing here, upgrading MacPro 1,1 with the Tiamo mod and Mavericks 10.9.2., but it's in a home recording studio so noise is a big issue. Any suggestions which cards are the quietest?

I won't be gaming on it, but will be doing a bit heavier photo/video stuff. Definitely silence over performance, though.

Depending on your budget but. If you want dead quiet you could go with a GTX 970. It has a feature where the fans don't run at all when it is not under load. The GTX 960 just came out, it might have a similar feature and it's right around $200 .

Update: yes the 960 does have that feature. For MSI I it is called Zero Frozr.

Budget's more in the $100 range --- that 970 does look nice but a bit overkill for what I'm using it for

If you want quiet for $100 then you are best to look for a basic fanless GPU like a GT 730. Or if you prefer AMD there is the R7 250 but I can't say if that works or not.

You will have issues being on snow leopard and trying to use a PC card. Snow leopard doesn't have the drivers. If you want to use an NVIDIA card you will need the netkas injectors and a Mac EFI helper card. You might be able to find a flashed AND card but I don't know what cards would be supported.
