Mac Pro 1.1 with NVidia FX 4500 card, only 8 MB recognized

Guys, I just upgraded my Mac Pro 1.1 to OS 10.9.3 (same thing with 10.9.5) and the system only recognizes 8 MB from the 512 MB of the NVidia card.

Any ideas of a solution?

When I have seen something like that it is frequently just a bad connection somewhere, not enough signal getting through.

Long cable, plug not tight, etc.

Run OpenGl Extension Viewer or Uningine Valley.

If problem is card it will crap out before reaching the end or you will see purple & green artifacts.

Next is a PM I got and I would rather answer here:

I had installed Yosemite on my 2,1 Mac Pro 8 core 3.0Ghz, I will update the GTX 8800 graphics card, the PSU in Mac Pro is 300w, so, based on my computer specs and considering that I need CUDA, Open CL/GL for video and 3D applications, which Nvidia will give me the best performance and also runs with no problem on my 2,1 Mac Pro with Yosemite?. I don't have a preference if is flashed or not.

Mac Pro has 1KW PSU or so, that is never issue. Issue is power plugs.

The answer is really all about boot screens. If you want them on primary card, the most powerful Nvidia card is our 8800GT 1GB. Unique thing about this G92 based card is that it just meets requirements for Mercury acceleration. But don't expect miracles, still very old tech.

Note that while we have also created a Quadro 5600 for EFI32 it is G80, just one iteration too early for Mercury, despite having 1.5GB of RAM.

I would suggest that you get a GT120 EFI32 Dual DVI card from us for boot screens and then choose an unflashed PC Nvidia card that meets your needs.

Thanks MacVidCards for your answer
I will change the cable again to se if that works, if not I will the Run OpenGl Extension Viewer
regards
Mike

Have a macpro 1,1 running 10.9.4 with a nvidia gtx560. No boot till login. Upgraded to 16gb ram and dual quad xeon's

Worth to upgrade?

Hello specialists,

Question:

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 (upgraded from 1,1) with 16GB RAM 667 MHZ and 2x 2,66 quad core Xeon. My graphics card is a HD 5770 Mac edition. Running 10.8.5. (Tiamo).

Although I am happy with my system, my graphics are not the best since I use Photoshop a lot and it is not that smooth.

Since the Mac Pro 1,1 uses a PCI 1.0 bus I don't know if it's worth to upgrade my graphics to a HD7960 or GTX 660. Hopefully somebody can give me a advice about it.

Thanks in advance!

Photoshop uses a lot more of the CPU have you tried adjusting the render settings? Also there isn't that much of a speed difference between PCIe 1/2/3 except when doing computations that can truly saturate the bandwidth. Even when gaming the difference between PCIe 2.0 and 3.0 is 2-3 FPS. In some instances PCIe 2.0 x8 will be faster than PCIe 3.0 x16 (in real world performance).

Hello all,

I have read the thread and still have a question. I have a 2006 MacPro 1.1 that needs a video card upgrade; the old one is about dead, and it is time for an upgrade. My wife will be using the computer for light Video photography stuff, surfing the web, etc. Definitely no heavy-duty stuff. I will pair this card with a 24" 1900x1200 monitor (DVI or HDMI).

Can someone please recommend a card that is dead silent (fanless?), costs less than $100, and will work 100% of the time with Mavericks? I saw mention of the GT210 card in this thread and was wondering what other cards "just work" of out the box in the $50-100 price range. I know I won't get the boot logo - not too worried about that as I can easily use another mac to fix any severe boot issues.

Thanks!

You could use a GT 640. They run right around $100 and will be a lot more powerful than the GT 210. I use a GT 610 in my kids' Hackintosh and it works out of box. Obviously no boot screen.

Thanks for the tip! Do I need to keep with a particular brand/manufacturer when choosing a card? Or, will any GT 640 card just work?

Appreciate the reply!

Hi Guys, been reading through this with a fine tooth comb as i too am in the process of trying to bring my MacPro 1,1 back to life :)

In fact its for my daughter, i was given the computer and it's in good working order with 8GB of memory. I have installed an 120 OWC SSD drive and Got Mavericks on it using one of the guides, so far so good...

For the monitor we are using a Smart TV - Samsung 5500.

It's going to be used for mainly word, powerpoint (Not much ned to upgrade the card for these i know) youtube and some games like minecraft, which do seem to need a better card as the frame rate on full screen is painful.

Would the ASUS G210 be ok for what i need it for?

http://www.ebuyer.com/252476-asus-g...-profile-graphics-en210-silent-di-1gd3-v2-lp-

I see a lot of people have gone for the ASUS GT640 -

http://www.ebuyer.com/516829-asus-n...ddr5-vga-dvi-hdmi-pci-e-graphics-gt640-1gd5-l

Would i benefit from spending the extra money over the Gt210?

Last question - I want to dual boot this to Windows 7, would the fact that there is no boot screen with the above cards mean i could not hold down the option key at start up to choose my Operating system? or would that still work?

Many thanks for any help

For dual booting just use a program that sits in the menu bar called BootChamp. Since holding option does not work without a boot screen you just click on the icon in the menu bar a choose restart into windows. When you reboot from Windows it goes back to OS X.

That website has a GT740 for $4 more than the GT640.

Thanks for the info on BootChamp :)

An yes good spot on the GT740 - Compared to the GT210 would this give superior performance?

Also i spotted the Asus GT 720 2GB GDDR3 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card for £48 - how does the compare?

Thanks for the help, as Graphics cards are my weak area.

Here is a good chart on the hierarchy of graphics cards:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html

Just buy the best card that is in your budget.

Thanks, i'll take a look!

also looking on ebay my current Mac Pro nVidia GeForce 7300GT is still selling for around £80+ also i have the old 6600GT apple card, which is around £20.

So if i can upgrade for free i'll be happy :)

I'd sell the 7300GT asap as they are becoming obsolete fast.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll get that on Ebay ASAP!

Also from that chart the Asus GT 740 seems pretty much up there!

Think i'll give this one a go!

Well the ASUS GT740 arrived and works perfectly! out of the box.

I am unsure if there are settings i could change, or if i ever need to? do i?

But thought i'd report back here as this is where i got my info from in the first place, cheers guys!

No there aren't any settings to change in OS X for the GPU.

Quick question, would a Galaxy GeForce GT 640 graphics card work in a mac pro 1,1 upgrading to Mavericks or Yosemite? I'm trying to find an inexpensive way of upgrading from the stock card to get hardware acceleration.

It will work.
