Hello again,

So, I have a strange issue (But I'll admit I have a strange setup) with Tiamo's hack...

Let's start from the beginning : I made a 10.9.3 image modified with Tiamo's EFI, cloned it on several mac pros or booted from it, never had any issue. Also modified the image to update without problem. So, I know the image works.

Then, I replaced the SSD in my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro, and ended up with the original SSD sitting there doing nothing, and I thought "Hey, couldn't I use this SSD as a boot drive for my mac pro?"

Turns out I can, purchase this off ebay :
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/261492256656?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

It arrived today, I stick the SSD in, plug it in the mac pro, it shows up. I test the thing, it actually works very fast, maxing out the Sata2 port speed, so I'm a happy camper. I clone the image on the SSD, try to boot...

No go! It shows up as bootable, tries to boot, gives me the apple, then goes black for a second or two, comes back on grey screen with the boot wheel, then it flickers, boot wheel keeps on spinning... then it flickers again, and the cycle goes on forever, it never boots. I tried to re-clone the image, same deal.

By then, I start to blame it on the cheap ebay board that I bought, thinking that thing may not be bootable, for some reason... So I clone my 10.6.8 system on the SSD, to see what's happening... And it boots fine! and crazy fast! Not a glitch, nothing.

So, let's sum up : The SSD is ok, I tested it. The 10.9.3 Tiamo image is ok, I used it several times, including on this very mac pro. The board appears to be ok, as it's working at full speed, and boots 10.6.8 with no problem.
Still, the 10.9.3 image refuses to work on it... :(

My only idea is that there may be some kind of software issue between the Tiamo image and the Retina SSD or the board itself... Any idea, suggestion?

My setup : Mac pro 1,1 2.66Ghz Quad Xeon (I have some X5355 on the way, but they're not in there yet, and I haven't updated the firmware to 2,1 either yet), 10GB RAM (some of it is 800Mhz, though I don't think it would cause any issue there, but I mention it anyway...), Radeon 5870 for Mac (Not a flashed PC card), no PCIe extension card.
Currently running on 2*250GB HD strip RAIDed (could the RAID cause the issue?) on 10.6.8, and there is also a 2TB HD in. All HDs are SMART tested fine, the RAM has been fully tested fine as well. Wifi and bluetooth cards installed.

My suspicion would be a mixup with the image. I would restore the standard boot.efi's and boot the disk on another machine. Then swap them back and see, whether problem is solved on the old Mac Pro.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers. I finally figured it out tonight after fumbling around with a few things...

I knew the image was good, and I even remembered trying it on that very mac pro a couple of month ago, when I first got it.
Back then I had tried it from an external drive, though, not from that SSD, so I tried from a regular drive instead, no change...

Then I remembered I changed a few things on that mac pro since trying the hack, so I decided to reverse those changes one by one, to see what would fix it.

I started by suspecting the RAID, then the 5870 Graphics Card, then the 800Mhz RAM I added...

Turns out it was none of that, but something much simpler, and much more sneaky : The dual monitor!

Here's the thing : This image I restored is basically a fresh install of Mavericks modified with the Tiamo hack and the script to allow it to update, nothing else, so all the preferences are all default.
My mac pro is hooked to a regular computer screen, and to a HD TV that I turn on only when I want to watch a movie, however the TV is always connected, whether it's on or not, and the Graphics Card and the system always see it and consider that I have 2 monitors plugged at all times.

On my regular system, under 10.6.8, it is set up as extended desktop, so I can sometimes use the TV as extra working space, but under the image, it is set up on mirroring by default. My HDTV is widescreen, while my regular monitor is 4:3, and mirroring is usually not happy with 2 screens with such different shapes and resolutions, I've seen it cause issues before, though it usually solves itself by just cutting part of one screen (usually the sides of the widescreen), which is another reason why I do not use mirroring on my setup, cause my movies would be truncated!

But on this Tiamo image, it doesn't work that way: At startup, the system sees 2 monitors, tries to mirror them... and fails! Then it tries again... and fails again!, and so on.... Hence the boot wheel, then the flicker, and the boot wheel again...

I found it out by accident, because when I removed the 800Mhz RAM, I had to open the whole machine, which implied unplugging everything, and after trying several configurations, I got lazy and didn't replug everything...
With just one monitor plugged, the image loads just fine, and if I plug the second monitor afterwards, it does as described before : cuts off the sides on the widescreen. But if I try to boot with the second monitor already plugged, it screws up... until I turn off mirroring (which I was going to do anyway).

Now on extended desktop, all is fine. Can't believe I scratched my head for hours at this thing... What a sneaky bastard!
May my experience help someone out there and spare him the headache : When installing a new system, especially a hack like this, always start by unplugging everything you don't need, to minimize the chances of something going wrong...

Lesson learned. Problem solved. :)

Booting into Windows 7-64bit install on USB in 10.9.4

I have Mavericks 10.9.4 installed on my Mac Pro 2.1 running Logic X on SSD startup disk, all working like a charm with Tiamo's genius help.
I have the following challenge as I would like to install windows 7- 64bit on a spare drive on the Mac Pro, as I need to use a few Windows based audio programs for specific tasks. The boot camp assistant lets me set everything up on the USB flash drive and it all looks good except the USB drive wont boot when restarting. Does anyone have a solution to this besides using a Windows 7 - 32bit. It is probably due to the 32 bit boot.efi that Tiamo provided to get the Mac working in the first place. Is there any hack I can do to cheat the USB installer for Windows 7- 64 to boot in 32 bit.
Any help would be appreciated.
And no I don't own a f.....ng PC
Thanks

the MacPro2,1 won't boot DOS/Windows/Linux from USB. booting non-OSX operating systems is only working from CD/DVD (or harddrives connected to the internal S-ATA ports).

also, to get Windows 7 64 bit working, you need to create a customized installer DVD ->
http://sergiomcfly.blogspot.ch/2008/04/select-cd-rom-boot-type-when-installing.html

just found a second how-to about installing Win 7 64 bit on an EFI32 mac ->

Thanks a bunch
Ended up installing a Win7 - 32bit by using a disk from an older pc with preinstalled Windows and installig the Windows support files downlaoded through Bootcamp. It satisfies my needs as I only want to run older 32 bit Windows based Audio software.
Thanks for the help :)

Help needed

Blow me down.

Used ( as a last resort) the SFOTT app, and it worked. I officially have 10.9.4 mavericks on my Mac Pro 2.1 ( was a 1.1 but applied the upgrade). Not sure why it worked, but it did, so another star for Tiamo and the SFOTT team

Lion -> to Mavericks

Hi guys!

I'm new to this forum. I basically got registered because I - like a lot of other people here - have an older Mac Pro that was left in the dust by Apple when they came out with MountainLion/Mavericks.

Now here goes: I just bought a used AT Radeon 5770 Vapor X on Ebay and will put it in my Mac Pro 2.1 3GHz Quad Core over the weekend in order to install Mavericks thanks to this awesome thread.

I think I understood everything I have to do with the Install USB Stick (Board ID, Flat Package Editor and so forth).

But my question is: Can I do this Mavericks Install WITHOUT doing a MountainLion install first? I'm currently running Lion on the old MacPro, I have a Mavericks install file from my newer MacPro (Late2013), but I do not have a Mountain Lion install copy. So I really hope I can go from Lion straight to Mavericks.

Anybody know?

Thanks!

Take your time doing it. I've installed the script as well so I don't get caught out with the updates breaking my system. My only issue I had was going to 10.9.3. My machine just got stuck after the updates got installed and I had to reboot to get it back. Why? I really don't know.

I seemed to have missed the script-part in this thread. May I ask you to elaborate? Since I'm doing this for the first time and yours worked I want to do it like you did it.

USB Problems since 10.9.3

Hi :)

I am experiencing some USB issues since updating my machine.
Until 10.9.2 I had no issues at all. After 10.9.3 (using tobyg's boot.efi) I am facing USB issues. My front usb connectors are not recognized anymore. Furthermore, if I unplug a USB device from the back connectors (e.g. mouse) and plug it in again, it is not recognized any more.

Today, I upgraded the machine to 10.9.4. Unfortunately, the issue is still there.
Any ideas?

Thanx!

Best,
eyseman

Eyesman, did you ever figure this out? Did reverting to an earlier system cure it?

I'm having what sounds like the same issue, except I can't tell if it started with 10.9.3 because I rarely switch things in the USB ports. I have done each delta update within a week or two of its release. (After waiting for the adventurers on this thread to confirm that it works!)

First noticed last week that a wired keyboard & mouse wasn't recognized. Then a thumb drive, then a portable hard drive. The only thing still running on USB is my Elgato TV tuner. I *think* I've recently unplugged and replugged it when I was re-routing some wires, but I'm not sure and not going to risk experimenting with it since that's my main use for the machine.

What else could affect USB ports? Restart hasn't helped; can't do PRAM reset because wired keyboard not recognized.

Hi guys,

I encountered a problem now very early in the process.

Booting from my modified (Tiamo method) USB Stick it says "OSX Mavericks can not be installed on this computer. And then it gives me the options to either restore from a backup or restart. (which lead to the same message, i tried 6 times now)

any ideas what it could be? please help. thank you so much in advance!

Mac Pro 2,1 / 2x3 GHZ Quad Core / Radeon HD 5770 Vapor X (which i just built in and tested fine under 10.7.5)

Used the SFOTT method as well now. WORKED LIKE A CHARM! Tadaaaaaa!

Running 10.9 on my MacPro 2,1 2x 3GHz Quad Core and updating to 10.9.4 right this moment. Crossing my fingers it works and works well.

Thanks to the SFOTT guy and TIAMO. You are AWESOME!!!!

Thanks!

My thanks to Tiamo and SFOTT for bringing this capability to us.

Been watching this thread for a while now, and finally snagged a 1TB SSD to do a fresh Mavericks install on my MacPro 1,1 (upgraded to a 2,1). All works great - no issues at all.

It's nice to be back current with the OS, and off Lion.
