Evening all, need to know if I'm the only Mavericks user experiencing a very sluggish system on my MacPro2,1 w/ 32gb of ram and 5770gpu?

Me too and slow network problems too. Buy to be fair, this also is occurring on my MacBook Pro 5,1 with 8GB of RAM.

Can Yosemite be installed same way?

Yosemite is released today, can it be installed same way as this?

Thanks

USB and Sound Issues - SOLVED!

Eyesman, did you ever figure this out? Did reverting to an earlier system cure it?

I'm having what sounds like the same issue, except I can't tell if it started with 10.9.3 because I rarely switch things in the USB ports. I have done each delta update within a week or two of its release. (After waiting for the adventurers on this thread to confirm that it works!)

First noticed last week that a wired keyboard & mouse wasn't recognized. Then a thumb drive, then a portable hard drive. The only thing still running on USB is my Elgato TV tuner. I *think* I've recently unplugged and replugged it when I was re-routing some wires, but I'm not sure and not going to risk experimenting with it since that's my main use for the machine.

What else could affect USB ports? Restart hasn't helped; can't do PRAM reset because wired keyboard not recognized.

hi,

I did face the same issues again on Yosemite. However, I found a way that worked for me. Maybe it can help you as well ;)

I checked the error logs for any clues when plugging in my headphones. It seems that "considerRebuildofPrelinkedKernel" error occurred.

Therefore I rebuilt the kernel cache as found here:
http://forum.osxlatitude.com/index.p...rror-109-help/

sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel

and tata: all my USB devices work again!
also tested it with a reboot/shutdown -> still works

Tested under Yosemite. Should (hopefully) work under Mavericks as well.

cheers

Thanks, eyseman, glad you figured it out.

My problem also cleared up, possibly as a result of doing an SMC reset. I say possibly because I'd already tried the reset (including using the reset button on the motherboard) before posting here, and it didn't seem to help.

Eventually I gave up and retired the machine. After a few days, out of curiosity, I booted it up again and, lo and behold, all was well again. No further problems since then.

Because the SMC reset involves leaving the power disconnected for a few minutes, I surmise that in this case, for whatever reason, it needed to be disconnected for several hours instead.

Chances are this means that it had nothing to do with the topic of this thead after all :p

Got it working flawlessly.....for now

Thanks to tiamo I was able to update my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 to Mavericks 10.9.5 without any problems (so far). I'm really glad I got the chance to put some extra life in my old machine again!

Mavericks running like a charm so far, but can't seem to get Messages.app working properly. Seems to get stuck at the login screen. Will keep on searching to find a solution to this minor problem.

I can't edit InstallableMachine.plis

Hello….please can someone help ?

I have followed all the instructions to the letter, so far so good.

But for the life of me I can not edit this file - when I open "OSX Install ESD", finder says, Sharing and Permissions, "You can only read"…despite "system" and "admin" having Read&Write.

So I assume it has been mounted (from the USB stick) as a read only file system.

I even tried to use "hdiutil" to create a writable shadow but this failed - still can't edit.

Drowning….and after a whole day about to give up…

Thanks

Phil

Yosemite working fine

Great!! Mac Pro 2,1 9GB ATI HD5770 OSX 10.10 working just fine!!! Thanks a lot Pike, Hennesy!! (and team ...)

Are you trying to re-package edits /into/ the original InstallESD.dmg?

Successful creation of a bootable installer lies in merely attaching/mounting InstallESD as a r/o disk to get the ever-so-important basesystem.dmg and /packages imaged onto a r/w disk so that further edits may be made.

As an academic exercise, you /could/ do the following:

# hdiutil convert /Volumes/Work/temp/InstallESD.dmg -format UDRW -o /Volumes/Work/temp/InstallESDnew.dmg

# hdiutil attach /Volumes/Work/temp/InstallESDnew.dmg

and edit the virtual r/w InstallESDnew image before detaching.

But, that is predicated upon the need for it to be re-packaged, which seems unnecessary as a ~5GB distributable is not far from an 8GB distributable, which is what the bootable USB key is all about.

And, we haven't even got to the CRC validation mis-match will render your works un-bootable, etc., &c.

Just attach InstallESD.dmg, copy/image its contents elsewhere, and then edit to your heart's content.

I'm sorry I got it right?
it might take a MacPro 2006 (32bit) and install some hacks mavericks? or maybe even Yosemite ??

Thanks.

: Eek:

Absolutely. Plenty of people running Yosemite on their legacy MacPros.

I just set up Yosemite on my MacPro 1,1 that's been updated to 2,1. Runs great and I haven't run not any issues with applications or hardware so far. It is definitely faster than Mavericks, however, a GeekBench check only shows a few points increase.

amazing !!!

but one could if he wants to buy a MacPro 2006 for 300 Euros, and then slowly improve it even replacing the processor and make it as fast as a 2010 version right?

of course spending a lot of money in the end.

thanks,

I am fascinated by the adventure of taking a MacPro 2006, and slowly strengthening it as a 2010 version !!!!!

Do it. Here is what I have invested in mine:

MacPro 1,1 with three drives in it (one 128GB SSD, 300GB and 500GB) 14GB of RAM and an X1900 video card - $400

2 - 5355 Intel processors from eBay - $70

ATI 5870 1GB video card (flashed PC card, not Apple branded) - $150

Total = $620

I would do it all over again. I have a very powerful machine, even by today's standards, that will run everything I need and do it well and without any instability.

Even if I can't go beyond Yosemite, I've still got all the OS features I need for my use.

SUPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For an additional $300 you can also drop a mini-SAS card into a slot & the SATA II slots become SATA III. Which works with any of the cMPs.

Boot.EFI file

Hi all,

Forum newbie here.

At the risk of looking very stupid, where can I find this modified Boot.EFI file ? Don't laugh ?

Am looking into upgrading my Mac Pro 1.1 to run Yosemite, but I cannot seem to find this piece of code to use.

Can anybody help at all?

Cheers
Dave

OK, I have the MacPro booting OS-X Mavericks 10.9.5 (also 10.9.3) but I have one small problem.

My video card, a NVidia Quadro FX 4500, which has 512 MB or memory, is seen as having only 8 MB.

That means that I can't run Aperture with this machine, which is why I got it.

Any ideas, would be greatly appreciated.
