Does this mean that a Mac Pro 4,1 will run Sierra unmodified without any of this?

Mine has an ATI HD5770 w/ 1024mb. With Yosemite, my Mac Pro refused to recognized which display was the main startup display which turned it into a brick unless I turned my HDTV on and switched to the Mac to correct the display orientation each boot. That was maddening. It was finally fixed in El Capitan.

But personally, I still think Mavericks is more stable than El Capitan, at least as far as bluetooth crashes which drive me nuts daily on El Capitan.

10.6.8, 10.8 and 10.9 were the best versions for our old MPs, imho.

Of course if you need a new NVIDIA maxwell GPU, 10.10 is required for the web driver.

Many thanks for your nice and enjoyable creations, :), and for taking the time.

So is this wifi card not supported in the 3,1?

I had to do a clean install of my Macpro, so I used the USB stick with Dosdude1's install patch.
I used this stick to successfully install Sierra on my Late 2008 Macbook (5,1). That works great.
What doesn't work so great was Sierra on the 3,1.
It runs some minutes, then freezes and after a while the Mac reboots. The crash reports states, that a CPU was not responding (not servicing some interrupt). Since, I was still configuring the Mac, I have not much load at this time.
After some fiddling, I installed El Capitan, so I have no logs at the moment.
I had never such a problem with El Capitan or Win10, even under heavy load.
My configuration is as follows:
- Dual E5462
- A Mac edition HD5770
- non-patched GTX 750Ti (which at the time of the crashes wasn't enabled)
- APPLE BROADCOM BCM94360CD (http://www.osxwifi.com/apple-broadc...th-4-0-with-adapter-for-macpro-2008-2007-2006)

Anyone else having this problem?
Anyone with a idea, what the problem could be?

I had to use the patch tool but macOS Sierra is running quite happily on my Mac Pro 3,1. I don't have a microphone so Siri is disabled. I'll have to get around to replacing the stock graphics card. Mine originally came with two 2600XT cards and can support up to four displays, though I took one card out so I could put in an Accelsior S card with a SATA-III controller for an SSD. (Boot time is about 35 seconds - not bad!)

Running smooth on my 3,1! For some reason, the patched USB installer would not boot - it would kernel panic halfway through. But I used the patched installer on another Mac and installed OS X directly onto the external SSD. Slid that back into the Mac Pro, and boom, Sierra booted right up! My USB 3 card works, my osxwifi.com AC card works with handoff, copy&paste, unlock with apple watch, GTX 970 with nVidia web drivers, everything! It's quick and running smoothly!

So far I'm not sure how will updates install on our 3,1 MacPros, for beta update 10.12.1 I had to use Pacifist to install them

If Sierra goes all pear-shaped, I can always go back to El Capitan. None of the software I use requires Sierra. In fact, most newer software only requires Mavericks or Yosemite.

You are using 667MHz RAM? The 2008 Mac Pro should take 800MHz RAM.

It does, but 800MHz ram is very expensive compared to 667. And, I already had the RAM from my 2006 Mac Pro.
Barefeats calculated that you only get a 4% gain in memory performance over 667mhz.

My wife and my systems are on 10.10. With her visual issues flat UIs are a killer. Our laptops and Mac Mini are running 10.11 and for what we do with them it is okay.

May have to consider going 10.12 but only after I see if it has anything I like.

I had to clear P-RAM on my 3,1 - install went smooth but got freebuf panics in a loop consistently (about once out of every 6-7 boots would get to login, then panic upon login). Once I reset the pram everything flew right along.

Hi Folks,

I've decided to create a specific thread for the Mac Pro 3,1 as that has its own unique set of circumstances to get Sierra up and running.

The good news is, after a LOT of help from Netkas, it looks like I'm finally there and have Sierra running on Mac Pro 3,1

It's installing now.

I will produce detailed, clear, unambiguous, instructions on how to get Sierra running on the Mac Pro. Given everything I have learned from repeated, failed installs, I now know what works and what doesn't, and you'll find that if you follow the instructions precisely, it isn't difficult to get it up and running. Nor will it be maintaining it.

NVIDIA has also released the web driver for Sierra - which is great news.

Just installed a HIS Radeon 7950 Graphics card. 3GB of DDR5-VRAM. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that it runs beautifully under Sierra, but I don't have a boot screen. I am holding on to a spare 8800GT card in case I need a boot screen. I am told that it can be flashed with the proper ROM for a Mac, but I will need to install Windows 7 or Windows 10 to make it work.

Yes, I will be going for 32GB of RAM in due course!

Hi,

Can someone advice how to solve boot stuck on MacPro 3.1 (early 2008, 2x3GHz Quad Core, Ati HD 2600 XT, 32 RAM).
Using USB flash drive for startup, used this way for creating bootable flash drive http://dosdude1.com/sierrapatch.html

Also was using this way https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-3-1-installation-guide-for-sierra.1978005/

Result same for both, see pict.
I will be grateful for the advice.

Maybe try a different USB drive?

As I indicated earlier in this thread, the ATI (AMD) HD2600XT is a crap card (It's been recalled at least twice) and should be replaced. This may be your problem. I was lucky and unloaded mine on eBay years ago.

I had two 2600XTs in my Mac Pro when I bought it and it supported up to four 1080p displays quite nicely. That said, I did replace it with a single 8800GT then a Radeon 7950 HD. I very quickly went from 256MB, 512MB then to 3072MB of VRAM. My inner OCD Geek now wants something with 4096MB of VRAM because I will soon have 32GB of RAM.

My 2008 3,1 is running on its 2nd 2600 graphic card. Would like to replace it but also want a boot screen. Still looking at my options.

My solution is a HD5770 Mac edition plus an unpatched GTX 750Ti. I get a boot screen and a second display on the HD5770, while the GTX 750Ti works as the main display.

Had one. It generated snow on the screen all the time so I finally sold it and went back to the 2600. My unit came from OWC and was in an Apple box.

Hi Guys,

Just to make sure i understand the given information correctly;

I have a Mac Pro 3.1 (Early 2008 model) with a original Mac certified 8800GT graphics adapter. As far as i understand it will work without having to install the additional nvidea web drivers?

Thank you very much,
Best,

Bastiaan

Yes, of course, as long it's still working (the 8800GT)... :)

Anyway have in mind that it may be time to upgrade your video card, especially for sierra...
