I wonder if we'd see the Mac Pro at NAB this April. If we did, then maybe it would be a sign that the focus is once again the video market...

My biggest hope though is a name change. I'd love them to bring back the PowerMac name instead of the Mac Pro. Heck, I'd be happier if they got rid of the MacBook Pro name and called that a PowerBook again too. Neither is gonna happen, but one can dream.

They were called Power Macs & PowerBooks because they utilized Power PC CPUs...

Bingo.

The trash can “mistake” was a design/engineering one related to heat.

It was never a marketing mistake. And that marketplace based data is what will decide what the Mac Pro will be.

Anyone who thinks billion+ dollar companies make these kinds of decisions based on what some angry people on forums are saying about expandability, etc.. hasn’t left the basement yet 😂

What the Mac Pro ends up being will be a data driven decision.

Just look at Apple financial statements. Revenues down along multiple product lines but still hitting records, even in the face of supply issues. Multiple large companies now engaging in layoffs due to economic forecasts. And in that environment you think Apple will take any kind of gamble and make a product that won’t sell to what the marketplace actually is?
They had an apology tour that visited all the basements. Anyone that thinks otherwise likes to ignore history.

So, is that how the game is played?

You can blurt out any **** you want, because you know it will be deleted by moderation in the end anyway?

Few things annoys me more than walking the line, taking all kinds of **** 'on the other cheek', breaking down the arguments step by step, until the fool finally steps out of the shadows, only to have the whole process—which can be pretty tiring to be sure—deleted.

I'm very interested in having all my posts reinstated, since I stand behind every word I write. I can only assume, the same holds true for any other poster's posts that were deleted.

Were they flagged? Perhaps only remove posts that break forum rules?
Agree. The forum mods are mistaking argument with who knows what. I was raised with argument being a good thing. You provide a thesis, it may stand up, it may not. If you’re proven wrong you’re not angry about it, you’re great full to the other person for showing you had a faulty thesis and everyone around the argument is enriched. It’s good if the arguments get intense because that means people did their best to advance the argument and ideas around the argument are clarified. Just because you disagree, doesn’t mean you dislike the person you’re arguing with, and if anything, I tend to respect that person more for having really good arguments.

‘’Sanitizing the forums to only koombaya posts does a disservice to everyone.

Thanks for getting back to the real point of this thread; daydreaming about what could be :) I definitely don't want the powermac name back, but you can dream for it LOL :)

My daydream is the M3 Extreme Mac Pro at Siggraph...

Massive Apple booth with Blender, Cinema4D, & Houdini "booth-within-a-booth" action...

Real-time ray-tracing in the viewport & blazingly fast rendering on ASi GPGPUs...

Two Mac Pro variants on display/demo:
  • Mac Pro Workstation - M3 Ultra / M3 Extreme with (up to) two ASi GPGPUs
  • Mac Pro Cube - M3 Extreme without slots

This, but i freaking want it to happen in march!
Also want it to be coupled to a new xdr screen that is like current 6k but extended to be a wider version. And fixed hdr zones etc.
If they don’t present a solid upgrading system I would probably go for the mac pro cube with something like extreme/192/4tb and expect upgrades every 3 year or so.

I can't imagine it makes sense to have an M3 Extreme, let alone two radically different low-volume Mac Pro SKUs. The slotless option is already taken up by the Mac Studio.

After all, this is the "What if...?" thread...

Does the cube with slots need to be called "Mn Extreme Mac Pro Cube Ultra"? 🤣

Ok they have an infinite upgrade cpu, like the everlasting gobstopper, but for cpus, paired with 3rd party everlasting GPUs and infinity local memory. They pay you infinity to take it off their hands. Then they take you on tours to show all their upcoming products, and listen to everything you say. They give you all their profits so long as you use the money only for fun things.

I think the least likely sentence is "...and listen to everything you say."

Y'all are ridiculous lolololol.

This is the weirdest sentenced I've ever constructed about the most valuable company on planet Earth:

...Apple has so much potential.

Isn't it sad seeing it squandered away, as they shift their focus to purely building cellphones, and stockpiling cash?

If I was at the helm, that R&D department would be working on some RADICAL stuff, man

Whenever I think about how much potential Apple has, I think about my iPhone which Apple have really emphasised is a photography device.

When shooting video, the flash can be switched on as a torch, to provide a constant light source. So, even when not recording, the subject is illuminated & I can choose framing, focus points etc, and then hit record.

When shooting stills, the flash can only function when the shutter is active, recording an image. So, in low light conditions, I can't see anything on the screen to frame a shot, or find anything to focus on, until I bring in a separate light source.

That's quintessential Apple.

If I'm not mistaken, a macbook pro m2 max with 96 gb of unified memory and 4 tb of SSD is already faster and cheaper than a mac pro 16 cores with a W5700X 96 gb ram and 4tb SSD (the most sold model?)
So we can be happy about the m2 ultra with 192 gb of unified memory (which will already be more powerful and faster than a 2019 28 cores xeon )
and about metal geekbench, don't forget that this benchmark does not take into account the neural engine which greatly speeds up rendering times
so the mac pro 2023 will be better than the $50,000 mac pro 2019 anyway.
And if in addition, Apple provides its own mpx graphics cards to increase the calculations even more, it will be very good.

Is that true that it’s faster than a 5700 in say metal scores? I think a single 6800xt will still be faster at graphics like metal. So I’m not sure you’re right.

A duo 6800 or 6900 should be a decent bit faster, and those are last Gen cards. Current gen cards should demolish an m2 ultra—without mentioning next Gen. It will be sad and pathetic unless they support 3rd party graphics cards.
