Way too much thought being put into this. If your Mac Studio is too noisy for you return it and purchase another one. If that one is too noisy too then either return it or accept it. Whether Apple acknowledges it or not (I think they won't given their history) is irrelevant. It's either noisy to you and tolerable in which case you keep it or it's not and you return it.

What about helping other people?

Sure I can return my Mac Studio without trying to work out why it’s noisy, but that’s not going to help anyone else who is struggling with the same issue or is on the fence about buying a studio but doesn’t know if this issue is real or not.

That's a proper way to marginalize a problem. Just ignore it. And Apple does not always ignore the problem. It might take some time to acknowledge. But they don't blindly sit back and hope for 10% of a product to be returned. I'm on my 4th unit and so far so good. 2 and 3 were good at first as well. About 8-10 days in those went sideways. I don't know if the fans need to A. Break in, or B are defective. Apple can either give us a glimmer of hope or fill us with doubt. Their call either way. And as stated it seems the right side fan (looking at the Mac Studio) is the culprit. And your statement reflects someone who either has not dropped money on one so no disappointment or emotional and/or financial investment or have been lucky enough to get one which makes no high pitched noises. And the high pitch noise happens continuously. I for one have spent SO much time on the phone with Apple support and traveling back and forth to the Apple store for replacement after replacement. Why would I do this. Cause after trading my 24" iMac M1 in to prepare for this purchase, I feel now that I'm stuck. At least till something else comes along that I can get at least 32 GB memory in.

How has this helped other people? All I see are people stating their Studio is or is not noisy. There has been zero information as to which ones may or may not be noisy. All I've seen is speculation and conjecture. You either have the problem (or not) and, if you do, it either bothers you or not. If it bothers you your only choice is to return it for another and, if you've already done that then return it and go with a different option.

I am not marginalizing anything. I am merely stating the problem, if you are experiencing it, is outside of your control. You can talk about it until the cows come home (like they did in the 2018 Mac Mini thread) but that won't change your situation.

How is having a problem or not speculation and conjecture? I've had 3 with the problem. And I keep trying based on people saying theirs don't make the high pitched noise. So the people who have the high pitched problem are obviously lying then. I think its extremely helpful, and I for one am hanging in there. You feel differently and that's your right. But I actually feel I'm helping, and that your statements are feeling less helpful.

I'm not convinced you even understand the problem.

At this point have positive contribution or leave the thread and let us with this annoying problem communicate in this community the way it was meant to be communicated in.
Strawman as I never made such a statement. I have never dismissed a single claim that someone is having the problem.

That said my response is about as constructive as it can get: If you are experiencing the problem return your system for another one. If that problem is also experiencing the problem then return it and buy something else. Those are your options, there are no others.

I posted a spectrograph of what I believe is a faulty Mac studio ultra. If someone (you?) who believe they have a functioning Ultra could post a spectrograph showing no peaks that would be really helpful.
How would that change your situation?

Because if I knew there were “perfect” ultras out there I’d be willing to return possible multiple times until I get a good unit.

Whereas if you posted a graph identical to mine I’d know that my ears and the Mac Studio don’t mix and I should just get a refund.

That would be very helpful.

Really? How many times would you be willing to do that? 10 times? 100 times? 1,000 times? More?

I've done that already twice in this thread. vs Mac Pro #1,232 vs Mac Studio with whine (recorded) #415

I put up spectrum analysis graphs that show no "whine peaks" from an Ultra, and that the Ultra Studio I have (picked up on March 18) is much quieter than my 6-core 2010 Mac Pro. Also I put up relative (not absolute, not taken in an anechoic chamber) dBA measurements of the quieter Mac Studio Ultra compared to my Mac Pro, and also compared to the room background.

So there is no question that some Studio's simply do NOT have the whine problem. That is indisputable.

I do believe some Studios have the whine problem because I can hear it in recordings that have been posted and I can see it in the spectrograms I have taken from those recordings. So I believe that is also indisputable.

How perceptible the whine is at a normal seating position in front of a Mac Studio that has the whine problem is subjective and will depend the setup. The actual level of the whine above the background noise at a normal seating position can be measured, but since 2-3 kHz is rather directional the measured value is going to depend on the surrounding surfaces behind and around the Studio. I don't expect anyone here is going to measure or use their Studio's in an anechoic chamber where any measurements for published specifications MUST be made.

But simply for the purpose of showing the relative level of the "whine" above the background, I wish someone that had a Studio with "whine" would post a spectrum analysis taken with a mic at ear level, at a normal position seated in front of the Mac Studio, showing a "whine peak" above the background noise. Has anyone done that? If so, I don't recall. Putting a microphone 6" behind the Studio pointed at the air vents blowing across the mic is not very helpful to indicate if whine can be heard above the background of the room alone.

I've kept reading this thread simply because of my curiosity as a product design engineer of more than 40 years hoping to find clues about the cause of the whine. But at this point I doubt anything more is going to be revealed about the cause of the whine until someone pulls the Studio apart and operates it without being in the case, and can disable the fans, run it off alternate power supplies (of which we know we have two distinctively different power supplies being used in both Max and Ultra Studios), etc.

Excellent. Thank you, that’s very helpful.

Never Mind. PianoPro has already chimed in with his measurement (which happens to show the lack of peak in the 2 to 3 kHz range)

=================================

look here for the comparison

I've got the noise. It's even worse tonight for some reason.

I'm working around the suggestions of others in this thread to get it baffled enough so I can use it without it irritating me. I'm trying a lint free cloth draped over the back tonight.

With this said I ask again: How many times would you be willing to do that? 10 times? 100 times? 1,000 times? More?

"That" referencing returning and buy another unit?
