I bought a Booq Viper Courier for our rMBP 13" for $89.

It's pretty nice. The shoulder strap is removable and the hand straps tuck into the case if you don't want to use them.

The only thing that puzzles me is the hard clam shell piece is on the opposite side of the laptop storage compartment.

I bought a 15" rMBP at the local Apple Store today - poor salesperson and I needed to try three blue, see-through Speck cases before one fit (the third, obviously). Is there any risk of scratching at all with the Specks? It was all they had in store, and spending lots on my first Macbook (Pro), I just went with it... Should I have researched more?

I have used Speck cases on my 3 previous 15" rMBP; also the two 13"rMBP, one 2012 13" MBA and one 2010 13" MBP home all have Speck cases. I highly recommend them and don't think they would scratch the body. You do have to remove it and clean small debris that may get trap in between the body and case every now ad then, but I have not seen scratched due to it.

Regards,

Francisco

How are the BOOQ Vipers?

I've been looking at them for awhile, and they seem to be exactly what I want, except for the fact that the majority of the reviews have described a strong chemical smell.

Have they fixed the problem recently?
Does the smell go away?

Does anyone here know if that smell indicates something toxic or not?

They air out quickly. I have one of the courier cases.

That looks really good and just what I have been looking for. Fits the retina specifically and magnetic instead of zipper. Thanks much, just ordered one.

Amazon has it for $39.95 btw.

http://www.booqbags.com/us/sleeves/viper-sleeve/VSL15-BLK

Now that I fave had a bit more hands-on experience with this sleeve I can say that I'm quite pleased with it.

At first, I thought it was a bit big, but the extended corners help a lot with shock absorption.

The magnets are easy enough to disengage but are strong enough to hold the laptop in securely; laptop won't fall out if turned upside down.

The fit is phenomenal and despite being thin, it is quite protective.

I just schlep this and my rMBP into one of these bad boys -
http://www.saddlebackleather.com/briefcase?sc=8&category=301406 -
and my MacBook is completely protected from anything life has to throw at it!

I'm a happy camper.

Read back in this thread a few pages.

It's an issue. I don't believe the previous model had the same.

I'm returning my Hammered Hardshell InCase 15" to Apple for this reason.

Really? I wasn't aware the 15" had microphone holes next to the jack plug..

Just got my Kuzy Case for my rMBP 13" 10/2013

I also got the Kuzy Keyboard cover

I posted a youtube video trying to test its latches
Verdict:
Kuzy Hard Cover for rMBP 13" : 4 stars: Front latch was slightly loose, does not seem to affect functionality at all. It affixes well enough to be held UPSIDE DOWN by the bottom case. Much cheaper than Speck at only $25.

Kuzy Keyboard Cover: 4 stars: No slippage during use. Minus 1 star for no serious attempt at adhering (magnets in the future?). I probably should add a star for it being only $6.50 with free shipping.

Hi everyone,

http://www.sfbags.com/products/macbookair-smartcase/smartcase-macbookair.php

The Waterfield Designs Smart Case seems like an interesting sleeve. Has anyone tried it out?

Waterfield Designs are really high quality stuff. A friend of mine has the smartcase, it looks a bit "thick" being 1'' and all. Personally I would like something that appears a bit thinner. This product of theirs is really nice: http://www.sfbags.com/products/laptopsuedejacket/laptopsuedejacket.htm.

Just got my new sleeve from Rickshaw! My new 13" rMBP fits snugly and much better than in my old Incase 13" neoprene sleeve. It feels very well made, and the interior is actually much softer than i expected. Their customer service is also great too!

I'm not sure if the rickshaw site lets you do this too, but you can actually order Rickshaw Sleeves with custom designs that you can upload through Zazzle.com

I see, well that sucks.. Are there any shells that don't cover the mics? The ones I've found all look like they cover the same parts of the laptop.

I've just received the Speck 13" SmartShell Case in Orchid Purple ( http://store.apple.com/uk/product/H...-for-macbook-pro-with-retina-display?fnode=50 ).
It's labelled Discontinued on the Apple UK store but it fits perfectly on my new Late 2013 13" rMBP.
Top and bottom pieces clipped on easily and there is no difference in the fit compared to that of the Speck SmartShell I previously had on my cMBP 2011 with no noticeable gap beneath the clips and no movement when lifting or using the rMBP.

I've always had Speck SmartShells on my MBPs and none have damaged them, no scratches etc despite not removing the case as often as it suggests.

I know the topic of a properly fitting sleeve for the 15" rMBP is about beat to death at this point, but I'm looking for some input anyway.

I bought the Incase Protective Sleeve Deluxe (http://goincase.com/shop/incase-protective-sleeve-deluxe-for-macbook-pro-15) after I initially purchased the City Sleeve which was too big. However, the Protective Sleeve Deluxe fits better than the City Sleeve, but still has some slack. Are there any cases along these lines (relatively padded, no velcro, not too bulky) that do actually fit properly? I've seen mention of the Booq Mamba and Booq Viper sleeve, but neither are quite my style, I'd like something a bit more plain.

Thanks for any ideas!

Vatuka 15" MacBook Pro Retina sleeve mini-review

My Vatuka rMBP sleeve arrived yesterday (a full week ahead of schedule, I might add!) This sleeve is manufactured in Korea and as far as I know the only way to obtain one in other parts of the world is through the Vatuka eBay store. Cost was $50 after shipping (to Canada).

Here's a short list of pros and cons:

Pros (in no particular order):

-Clamshell design allows for the MBP to be used while in the sleeve
-Easy access to all ports and AC socket
-Very lightweight, high-density memory foam makes for a pliable yet very resilient shell exterior
-Soft fleece interior with raised lip to isolate from zipper.
-Snug, secure fit; just enough thickness to provide proper protection without compromising the sleekness of the rMBP form factor
-Solid construction with sturdy feeling YKK zipper
-Surprisingly nice looking!

-And the biggest surprise for me: the "3D mesh" on the base of the sleeve really does allow for superior airflow/cooling. The vents are completely unobstructed. I tested this out by playing a fairly demanding game for about 30 mins and the computer remained as cool as it does on my desk. No discernible difference in heatsink temps or fan speeds. That's very impressive--and reassuring.

Cons:

-Upper retaining loops cover tiny portions of the display's upper corners
-Very average corner protection
-No extra pockets or compartments
-$50 still strikes me as somewhat pricey for a sleeve constructed from "man-made" materials

Overall:

This is a really, really nice sleeve. The outer material has a much nicer feel and look than neoprene, and super dense memory foam instills confidence in its ability to protect my MBP from significant bumps, while maintaining a relatively sleek profile.

For me, what really sells this case is the amount of consideration that went into ensuring proper ventilation and accessibility to the MBP's ports while it's on. As a musician, I often find myself having to put my MBP down on less-than-ideal surfaces, and so the ability to use it without compromise while in its sleeve is a major plus. In this light you can think of it as a sleeve that possesses some of the functionality of a Speck-style hard shell case. It's obviously not as sleek as a shell, but it provides better protection for travel, and much of the same functionality otherwise. And it hides the Apple logo when it's on, providing at least a modicum of anonymity to your $3000 thief-magnet.

This is an ideal sleeve for people who like to use their MBP 'naked' while at home or at the office, but who often find themselves in other situations requiring a little extra protection.

I really dig it, and hereby award the Vatuka rMBP sleeve my official johnnylarue Seal of Approval®. :D

PS: Apologies for the half-assed pics. Couldn't be bothered to drag out the dSLR this morning.

Got the Thule sleeve for rMBP and MBA. It still fits really well with the new late 13' rMBP. The rMBP is tight in it and the sleeve is really thin. One of the thinnest available.

The overall quality is great. Will see long term if it holds well, but I have a good feeling just by holding it that it's built sturdy and for long.

*There's a picture with my gf's iPhone4 in a case to compare on the thickness. Pretty epic how technology evolves!

Got my STM for my new rMBP 15 yesterday. Seems a really nice shell so will have to see how it holds up over the next few months.

Thanks for this review! My tastes are very similar to your's. Based on this, I ordered a white one for my 13" rMPB. Can't wait to get it in! :D
