Scan are currently out of stock but apparently have more coming in very soon. General consensus seems to be that they are the best compromise between assured quality and dirt cheap?

I bought a 1GB module from OrcaLogic for MBP and it's worked like a charm. Cost around £80 with next day delivery, £75 for free delivery, but I needed it quick. So, two would set you back £150, much more sensible eh? ;)

Orca memory for macbook

I'm about to order with Orca, think they are the safer option for the money. However, what about this from dabs ... this is the stuff ain't it? If so, and if crucial are always reliable, isn't this a brilliant option? Does crucial have a budget line perhaps? Cheers. Dave

I as looking round on ebay and bought this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9729415361&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1

it says they are samsung 1GB chips, the ones apple use. Is this true? Also, I reckon 130 incl p+p is pretty cheap, especially if they are genuine samsung.
Can someone tell me if that was a good buy, or whether I should have it got from somewhere else? (just for peace of mind)
many thanks in advance.

Here's the new link for this ebayer's ram (s/he sold out of the other batch!). This is even better than the dabs offer in my previous post, no? Has anyone actually received/used this? They are based in the US, which could cause problems. What does everyone think? And let me know b4 u buy it yourself! :p ;)

That certainly appears to be the correct sort of RAM. Personally I'll never order from Dabs as you cannot phone their customer services when things go wrong and emails get replied to automatically without giving you the answer you want, but it's up to you!

Why not order the value stuff from scan? They are a very good retailer.

It's out of stock right now.

Must by all those new MacBook owners :D

Based on the last time they ran out of stock on this particular RAM it'll probably be back in stock in a couple of days.

Ive got the ram (arrived very quickly with no problems from customs), but apple say my macbook will be shipping (at the latest) 19/21st June  Even though I ordered on 29th march (i did have to set up the 6 month 0% interest thing, but surely that can't add that amount of time to it?)

Anyway, I will let you know what the RAM is like when I finally get my macbook

Hi, thanks for your comments guys. Problem I have with the corsair value is it is 'value', and I read somewhere that that was not officially certified by Apple. It was in a post here on MR but I can't find it, I was impressed by the level of knowledge the postee had thou.

Heard similiar things about dabs myself robbieduncan. Hmmm.

Glad to hear you've got the ram from ebay Will, is the legit stuff as used by Apple. I can't see this failing to be honest, and I'm about to go for it later this evening.

My Macbook arrives next friday; ordered Tuesday.

Cheers

Dave

I only found out after mine was ordered (on the 6th) that it was out of stock. However they got more stock in on the 8th and it's on its way. I'd order from scan as they'll get more in very soon. Well worth waiting a few days than paying twice the price on dabs.

Any ram you don't buy from apple isn't certified by apple. All crucial or others do is check to make sure it works with apple computers they have.

As for worrying about the "value" moniker, corsair is one of the best memory companies in the world. Their value stuff is better than most competitors "premium" offerings. More or less what you are getting is RAM that qualified for it's rated operation but couldn't overclock much. "Standard" corsair ram in this case is rated at 667MHz but will overclock a lot higher without errors.

Ok, but what about the ebay idea? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Well as long as the ram you buy is "good" then you should have no problem with it. There are a lot of reputable sellers online as well as a lot of shadier characters.

Also remember that just because it doesn't work first time doesn't mean it isn't compatible. I got one stick before and it was just faulty. Returned it for a new one and never had a problem since.

Oh and as for ram compatibility. It was a problem mainly back when apple made it's own memory controller, but now they are using intels ones and any memory that works in any other intel computer should work in apples.

My corsair ram was depatched this evening by Scan. Even got a text message confirmation.

Really impressed by their customer service - guy on phone was great and you get an email confirmation for each stage of the process.

Let's hope the product is as good!

Be aware that Orca are having problems sourcing this Ram currently. I placed an order with them (they said it was in stock) but they couldn't deliver and I waited a week before cancelling the order.

I then went to Scan and they delivered my memory the next day and much cheaper. My Scan memory is working great in my MacBook.

So you may want to check with Orca about availability before placing the order.

Mark.

And it arrived today. Will install tonight and let you know how it works.

Didn't check, have ordered anyway. Will check at lunch, hope there is not an issue. I personally think it is worth the wait to ensure you get good ram. There are some mixed feelings on the corsair value stuff from what I've read.

Dave.

I got the ADATA ram from ebay today (1GB stick). It's working fine on my macbook, extended hardware test didn't show any problems. Great bargain for £40!! I hope it doesn't cause any future trouble though as one has already reported.

Same here... 2 gigs ADATA and been using it for a few weeks. Still works like a charm! :)

And the Scan stuff works just fine. What a beggar to put the RAM in though. Is this really better than the old pop the keyboard off way?

Ordered mine on Saturday, it was dispatched today and should be with me tomorrow or Thurs. No-longer a sourcing issue it would seem.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Scan MacBook Pro RAM

Hi!

My first post! Whooooo! :)

Anyway, i'm looking at getting a MacBook Pro in Summer for school (around august, i might wait for the Merom's - but's that's antoher story)
So after doing some research for RAM, scan looked good like you said.
It was £65-70 a week or two ago.
now it's only £56!!!!!!! - Bargain!!!

AND the main thing i was posting was about the returns policy. I phoned the up and spoke to the manager of returns. I wanted to know when i get my macbook Pro, that this RAM will work. (as it wasn't in the memory selector page) She concluded, that they couldn't confirm it will work, but if it dosen't then I could return for a full refund!

So you can't loose - give the Scan RAM a try - I know i'm going to! (I don't work for them!!! - in case you were wondering :) )

Last thing: Does putting your own ram void your warranty and procare plan. i.e. you bought your laptop, added more ram on the 1st day, then a month later is broke. woudl they say "On yer bike" or swap it out?

Thanks!

Dan :)
