I am a new Mac user so excuse my ignorance, but what is a Time Machine? I'm willing to do a clean install but I'm really not familiar with backups and all of that.

If you have an external USB Drive or Network drive, there's a System Preference (Apple Menu --> Time Machine) where you can do a full backup of your machine. If the drive is plugged in, it'll back up every hour all of the changed files. It's really nice.

When you do a clean install of macOS, you can restore from a Time Machine backup and it's honestly pretty remarkable. You come back to your login screen, everything is in place and aside from iCloud login, it's like the same machine. Great when you buy a new Macintosh. Everything is transferred over.

This sounds like something that I can do. I have a USB flash drive lying around, so would that work for the backup? Thanks again.

As long as the external drive is at least the same size as your internal. Remember, the backup is incremental, so over time the backup will be larger than your internal drive but when you restore, Time Machine intelligently grabs the most recent files and restores from those.

I'm new in these forums, so nice to meet you all. I have a really annoying issue:
(MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013)

Out of nowhere I get a "Documents" folder in the Trash even after I empty it. I see that it's from the iCloud Drive Trash but I keep emptying the trash and it still shows up. It appears to be the Documents folder that was moved when I tested the "Documents & Desktop" feature. It's no longer marked, so I store my files locally but I can't get rid of that. Is there any way to see the iCloud Drive trash?

Could anyone help me, please?

Honestly I also advise against restoring from time machine unless you have to.... Now, adamjackson is right - clean install, and then installing everything from scratch is time consuming, but thats why i dont upgrade every year right away, i'll upgrade when sierra is on its way out;

Three issues so far (late 2012 mini):
1. Safari causes major overheating (high 90s celsius). Jumps up very quickly and fan spins up. Switched to Chrome and now in the mid 50s as it should be.
2. The Cmd+drag to move that was mentioned by one of the pre-release users still doesn't work.
3. When scrolling down in Excel it intermittently scrolls up a few cells. Seems OK elsewhere. Could be Microsoft's fault but was OK before.

Is anyone have the problem that you try to restart your iMac and it closes everything and the dock stay there and iMac won't restart ?
I can't fix this problem and it's so annoying.

I have iMac 27" 2015, macOS Sierra 10.12 and it's fresh (clean) install.

Streaming video seems to crash Sierra and boot me to the sign-in screen. Anyone experiencing this?

Yes, that's similar to my problem where full-screen apps boot me out. There are now several threads on the Apple support community about this. For various people it's different triggers, for me it's most programs when I full screen them and ALWAYS Parallels 11 or 12 going full screen. Haven't tried full screen video yet. Nasty side effect is that Parallels hosed my Boot Camp partition such that I get blue screens saying I need to use installation media to fix it. I can still read it from the Mac side at least, so have spent the day backing up files from both OSes in anticipation of a full wipe and reinstall.

Three monitor setup on latest 10.12.1 beta build freezes. Used to work fine on 10.12 - but now system only handles two monitors, as soon as you plug in the third (regardless of order in which you plug in the externals) the system freezes and requires hard reboot.

MacBook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2012
macOS 10.12.1

2 thunderbolt & 1 hdmi monitor setup

Anyone else seeing this?
[doublepost=1474586007][/doublepost]FWIW I unchecked "Automatic Graphics Switching" in Energy Savings preferences and I'm up and running with 3 monitors again.

Two things:

- Cover flow goes WAY THE F TO FAST. Magic Trackpad 2, full battery.
EDIT: Universal Clipboard probably doesn't have a problem, I didn't realize my Mac was a year too early, just like with some of the other Continuity features..

Thanks! Good to know I'm not the only one. Hopefully Apple fixes this issue in the next update.

I did a clean install of Sierra, which went well. But after migrating my El Capitan User Folder and files into the fresh install, I get a kernel panic early in the boot cycle.
At first I suspected my NewerTech USB 3 card, so I removed the kexts for that card, but the kernel panics continued.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, here's the panic report...

Time Machine backup is painfully slow. The initial backup after the upgrade was huge, so I didn't pay it any attention, now it's taking 30+ minutes to backup 300 - 400 MB - they were never that slow prior to the upgrade. I turned of virus scanning of the TM drive, but it made no difference. It's on a single 1.5 TB Firewire 800 drive. That's the only FW drive I have now, so it isn't connected to a bunch of other drives. I haven't been able to find anything firm on it being an issue yet, but I'll keep looking.

I'm seeing weird (but minor) display anomalies involving background colors in web pages viewed with Chrome and Electron-based apps after upgrading my 2015 MacBook Pro to Sierra. See attached screenshots. I verified that everything looks normal on another MacBook Pro running El Capitan, so it's not just the apps. Anybody seeing anything similar?

Edit: Bug identified in Chromium: https://github.com/Microsoft/vscode/issues/12473

I've upgraded to Sierra this afternoon. Everything seemed fine after the update. After dinner, my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) wouldn't connect to the Wifi. I've narrowed down a few things.

It would not connect to the 5GHz n if the SSID was hidden. If I allowed the SSID to be shown, it would connect without issues. It would connect to the 2GHz band even with the SSID hidden.

I've done the typical SMC reset and NVRAM reset. I deleted the related wifi files and rebooted both the router and the MBP. I'm obviously on now and the speed seems normal with no drop outs. I can hide the SSID now and it will continue to work until it sleeps; no dice after that without re-enabling SSID broadcast.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Fred

Just upgraded my early 2015 rMacBook Pro to Sierra and the only strange thing I am noticing is that when I try and quit Mail, it takes forever to finally shutdown, if it does. Sometimes I have to force quit out of it. Wondering if this is something I may have set wrong or if anyone else is having it happen. Same thing happens with my 2015 iMac after I upgraded. Thanks for the help or info.

I was using macos sierra public beta on external usb 3.0 usb.
First i try to boot in recovery and reinstall macos sierra. but after installation progress imac boot to prohibitory sign.
Then, I downloaded macos sierra from app store and when installed it, imac booted with prohibitory sign.
After that i made and bootable usb and try to install it but again prohibitory sign.
Then, I boot from internal drive and i used carbon copy cloner and copied internal drive to ssd (el capitan).
After that i again try to install macos sierra to ssd with el capitan. but same thing happaned and can't boot with prohibitory sign.
Now, I can use external ssd with (corbon copied) os x el capitan but cannot update to sierra.
What can i do?

I don't know if this was posted in the thread already but – it seems that many people with 1440p and 4k external monitors can't use their native resolutions and are limited to 1080p. The 10.12.1 beta sadly doesn't have a fix for this either.

I tried to search the Sierra sub-board but didn't find any solution posted till date.

Lookup with force/three-finger tap stopped working in Sierra. I was able to get back the dictionaries as it seems they just had to be redownloaded, but the wiki look-up is still not working. Anyone else had taht and solved the problem?
(I checked replies but they were from July and with no solution)

I'm having the same issue. Disappointed this hasn't been fixed yet.
