I've updated my MacPro 3,1. Works like a charm without problems. Install dosdudes patch as described but without erasing the disk. Thanks dosdude!:)

Hi, got GM working on my Macbook Pro 4,1 thanks. However the backlit keyboard is not working. I noticed a post further back about AppleSMCLMU.kext needing a plugin, which I tried but it is not working. Is it working for anyone else ?
dosdude1 actually added that to the tool - you should have had an option to select that as part of the post-install patching.

Do you know if you selected it?

If you did and it's not showing up, maybe we just need to fix the cache.

Go to terminal and issue these two commands at the prompt (you'll be prompted for your password):

sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches

Then reboot - if your keyboard backlight doesn't come on as part of the boot process, then that feature is broken in the patching tool and we'll have to get you to re-apply the plugin manually.

Updated to build 16A319 yesterday on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro: went perfectly. As earlier, I updated in place rather than clean install and it seems perfect. If all goes well I'll leave it in place until the first official Sierra update comes from Apple.

Much kudos to 'dosdude'. I made a small donation via Paypal as a token of my thanks.

Yep, I have a 15 and 17 4,1 Macbook Pro and the Post-fix tool pre ticks the box. Tried the above commands and no joy.

You did reboot after typing those, right? :) (just checking).

Ok. Do you have a copy of kext utility? http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Kext-Utility.shtml
If not, snag it - it'll make things easier.

In finder, navigate to /System/Library/Extensions
Within that folder, you'll find AppleSMCLMU.kext - copy it to your desktop.
That file on your desktop - right/control click, show package contents, navigate to Contents/PlugIns

Take the AmbientLightSensorHID.plugin that I sent you a link for in PM and overwrite this file. (paste, replace)
Now close your finder window.

Open up the kext utility. File, Open, navigate to desktop and select your AppleSMCLMU.kext file, click Open.

It'll ask you for your password twice. When it's complete the button will change to Quit.

Click Quit to close it, reboot, you're good to go.

Weird, the patcher tool worked, created the bootable USB. It even launches from within OS X. However when I go to boot it from restart/boot menu select screen. It goes to the Apple logo, and just flashes for about two minutes with activity, then the computer restarts. Never makes it to the macOS boot screen to install.

You are talking about the boot selections, from booting up holding the Option key right? (not some boot manager?)
I wonder if you formatted the USB key properly? You had to select OSX Extended Journaled with a GUID partition mapping. What's the capacity of the USB key you're using?
Unfortunately, it looks like you need to try building it again...

Yep, straight from the Option Key. Select the boot disk, just flashes, then reboots back to normal. Disk Utility shows OSX Base System 15.67 GB USB External Physical Volume OS X Extended. GUID Partition Map. Only 5.97 used from the boot disk.

I'll try rebuilding again.

Do you have another USB thumb drive? Just in case there's an issue with that one...

What model machine are you using? Sounds like you're using a 2007 non-Penryn machine, and it's having a kernel panic.

Huh, that machine should work. My best recommendation would be to ensure the USB drive is formatted correctly, ensure you're using a stock copy of the Installer App, or maybe try using a different USB drive.

Looks like it was the USB stick, took another identical model, and it was able to boot just fine. Weird.

Unfortunately now it looks like the Sierra installer can't see FileVault encrypted drives however. Only the USB stick, and a separate unencrypted drive are available. Sigh.

Just to double-check:

You ARE just doing Journaled, right? (any of the other options could be problematic)

Yep, works now with a different USB stick. However, Sierra doesn't appear to see FileVault drives, or it just doesn't allow upgrades like others posted above.

Yep, looks like that's an issue with the GM installers (no idea if the installers they ship will have that patched or not).

You'll just have to disable FileVault, upgrade, then re-enable it.

It's almost like Apple doesn't think about anyone using something besides defaults. The last time it was issues with software RAID in OS X. The decryption is going to take a while. Ugh.

Working with the file you sent me, thanks !

Just did a GM clean install on a side partition to try it out, everything seems to be working great. Going to do an upgrade on my El Cap install. Is the software update tool still needed after the install? It didnt have the GM listed in the drop down menu.

I just tried to update (i.e. skipped the step with formatting the partition) a MacBookPro5,4, booted from the prepared USB, installation went fine. With about 11 minutes remaining the MBP rebooted, I used the option key to boot from USB again and after the loading bar there was a screen which told me to switch on my magic mouse. Which I don't have.

I powered it off again and now it doesn't even boot from the USB anymore. The grey loading bar goes to about 1/3rd and just stops. Verbose mode (booting from USB) shows this:

The main partition doesn't boot at all as the system is not yet patched.

What to do?

Fast or slow USB connection? What type of USB drive?

If it's a USB flash drive then even with USB 3.x, what appears to be a stop may truly be an extended period of activity, with no on-screen hint of that activity. Try leaving it for maybe half an hour.

It's a SanDisk USB 3.0 drive, but AFAIK, that MBP doesn't have USB 3.0, so it's using USB 2.0. I've already waited 15 minutes without any progress. (The first boot from USB was done in <1 minutes.)

BUT I just plugged it in again and for some reason, now it booted just fine from USB. Probably something needed to cool down, some caches got deleted after all those tries or so. However, I patched the partition and now it booted up as it should in the first place.

Anyone know a working method to change the keyboard backlight turning on/off thresholds? It's seems to be Sierra is more aggressively turning the backlight on.

Is anyone aware of what will happen when subsequent updates come out?

So, if I use the patcher, and then 10.12.1 comes out, will software update through the App Store just work normally?
