Has anyone tried using a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)

I'm very angry that my 8core i7 will be abandoned to itself shortly.
4 mac left to abandon.. Thousands of euros in the toilet

I'm replying via an early 2011 15" MacBook Pro model 8,2, running macOS Mojave 10.14 (18A391) from an external APFS formatted SSD. I have an identical installation on a separate partition of the same physical drive which is formatted as HPFS.

How do I know if my Mac needs the APFS patch or not?

You do not need the APFS patch unless you have APFS formatted volumes, and APFS formatted volumes are not required unless you want to receive OTA updates. Mojave runs just fine on HPFS volumes.

Terminal:
xcode-select --install

nm /S*/L*/PrivateFrameworks/CoreBrightness.framework/CoreBrightness|grep _ModelMinVersion

000xxxxx: 0900 0000 0100 0000 0d00 0000 0600 0000 ................

000xxxxx: 0500 0000 0600 0000 0800 0000 ............

MacBookPro9,x
iMac13,x
Macmini6,x
MacBookAir5,x
MacPro6,x
MacBook8,x

xxd -s 0xXXXXX-l 28 /S*/L*/PrivateFrameworks/CoreBrightness.framework/CoreBrightness

iHex open /CoreBrightness.framework/CoreBrightness

find: 0900 0000 0100 0000 0d00 0000 0600 0000
replace: 0700 0000 0100 0000 0d00 0000 0600 0000

save and close

replace CoreBrightness to /CoreBrightness.framework/CoreBrightness

and replace /S*/L*/PrivateFrameworks/CoreBrightness.framework

sudo codesign -f -s - /S*/L*/PrivateFrameworks/CoreBrightness.framework/CoreBrightness

sudo codesign -f -s - /S*/L*/PrivateFrameworks/CoreBrightness.framework

reboot "MacBook Pro 2010"

working

Quick Question on Mojave Patch update app.

I've used @dosdude1's for all installing previous betas of Mojave. Now I am in the process of installing/patching the latest version (18A391). Will installing erase/initialize all my previous files and custom settings I have on (18A390)? Or will I need to start from scratch?

Thanks Guys!

You should be able to install over your currently installed beta without losing any customizations.

I am new to this thread. I just found out MacOs Mojave was released today. I would like to know if it would properly run on a MBP Late 2011. I have read some comments about the GPU but did not quite understand. So what are the necessary steps to install Mojave?

Most of the information that you seek is contained in the OP. That said, yes, your 2011 MBP can run Mojave, but it will not use the AMD Radeon HD 6490M discrete GPU, which should be disabled.

Follow the steps outlined here macOS Mojave Patcher and Installation Guide.

Finally got the "final" release of Mojave 10.14 (build 18A391) on 2 of my un-supported Macs.
One thing I noticed is that Time Machine Backups are now listed by device name and not hostname for example.

Screen Shot 2018-09-24 at 9.22.25 PM.png

So instead of MojaveHostName, it is listed as MacBook Pro. I have several dated backups under each device.
No big deal. Anyone else notice this?

Thanks.

Night Shift change

Ok, probably the offset changes on almost any minor version upgrade, but the major unix exec change occurred starting from Mojave beta 4 (dosdude1 discovered that first), after that version you can use an already fixed CoreBrightness, it won't give any issue on any machine.

edit:
you forgotten to remind to those who want to do CoreBrightness patch themselves they need to download and install the Xcode Command Line Tools, without them you can't complete the most important part: codesigning the unix binary.

Hey guys, i installed mojave on Macbook mid-2010, and it works very well; just the isight camera doesn't work well, isight is slowly with some glitch. There is a fix for this?

EDIT: I searched in the thread and i found this:
I just replace IOUSBHostFamily to let the built in keyboard and touchpad work (they're internally connected by USB 1, which is removed in the new kext) and IOUSBFamily because that fixes the iSight camera for whatever reason. MacBook7,1 here.

@ASentientBot Does isight camera work perfectly without glitch for you? If yes, can you explain me how to do?

Which one do you use? is this the one to fix dark sidebar in finder? I will try it after install 18A391

I guess he used both, to fix "dark sidebar" finder you need this on page 279 (hybrid transparency), meanwhile I've discovered another way to fix only light mode "dark sidebar" into a solid whiter color (a bit more than the previous I did), unluckily I'm not still capable to allow transparency into that zone, but for the second method I'd wait first pkouame hybrid patch public release, then maybe could be combined.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and to this topic. Read through the installation notes. I have two mid-2011 27" iMacs, one with a Radeon 6770M and one with a 6790M. The installation guide says iMac 12,2 IS supported, but that graphics acceleration is not available for 6XXX cards. One instance suggests these cards are disabled, but of course that can't be done with an iMac, and I'm not about to spend $$ trying to get an eGPU to work on these older machines.

So my question is this: before hitting GO on the install, will Mojave work on my iMacs or not? Has anyone upgraded their 2011 27" iMacs to Mojave without any issues?

Many thanks in advance.

I have the exact same setup and I'm curious about how it runs and what issues disabling the GPU has.
Any possibilty to backport some older AMD drivers and get them working?

It's because after a Mojave upgrade the local hostnames reflect the mac model type, so before backup next time change first the hostname as you want go through System Preferences - Sharing prefpane, edit computer name and leave unchecked "Use dynamic global hostname". This is done on-the-fly.

edit:
There are also Terminal ways to do that:
sudo hostname Hostname-you-want (where the spaces are made through "hyphen-minus" symbol)
hostname
or
sudo scutil --set LocalHostName hostname-you-want
scutil --get LocalHostName

but they require a restart before applying globally.

Profit!

I haven't installed APFS yet. Will do so tonight...

Hi,

I did not find details about APFS ROM Patcher and FileVault. I would like to apply the patch on my 3,1 but I was wondering if it will allow me too boot on a AFPS Encrypted volume ?
@dosdude1 is supposed to work ?

TIA !

So I understand them not supporting every iMac, MacBook, or MacPro, and wanting/requiring a better graphics card and firmware so to handle certain updates better, but why in the heck would the dynamic theme need an extra GPU boost?
I got the 2nd highest spec of the iMac Mid 2011, Sandy Bridge Processor, upgraded graphics card, SSD, etc etc... if this Metal stuff really a big deal? *Forgive my ignorance, for the past 6 months I've finally started learning the complicated work, taking apart, and fixing Macs, (I have worked with iOS for the last 10 years, so this is still pretty fresh to me.) lol.

Kallum.

So did you just follow the steps in the first post to achieve that? I REALLY want this update but I have a Mid 2011 iMac that doesn't support "Metal"?
Any information on how you did it, would be great. Apologies if I'm a nuisance. *eek.

Hello everybody,

I suggest to consider a donation on dosdude's website. Probably the donation in sum will be huge enough to be shareable amongst the other geniuses, who worked hard to bring Mojave up to life on our unsupported devices.

I am going to do so right now.

-> Thank you all for at least 2 more years using my MB 5,2 running on _the_ current OS.

Installed no problem on a MacbookPro 5,1 (Mid 2009 13" model)

Light theme not so great but dark theme perfect. Now the whole of Mac OS looks like I am using FinalCut :)

Thanks for prolonging my Mac by another year.

Yes, I have a late 2011 i7, but and card which doesn't support metal, everything works normal, you don't get transparency.

Yes, it works, I have installed all the previous builds without problem, as you wrote you are aware that you don't get acceleration, I think you were reading the post suggested for a 2011 macbook which somehow one the video cards can be disabled. So you are safe to go ahead if you don't mind no having acceleration or transparency.

Strange, my macbook pro (2009) shows transparency in dark mode.

Had a nearly smooth upgrade on a Mac Pro 3.1 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 video card. Thanks to dosdude1 and everyone involved.

The only issue I had was that an Atheros 9280 WiFi card, which worked great with High Sierra, wasn't recognized in Mojave. Apple simply removed the driver ("AirPortAtheros40.kext") from IO80211Family.kext!

I installed the IO80211Family.kext from a High Sierra Backup with a KEXT helper app, rebooted and everything worked as hoped. Maybe this could be added to the patcher updater, too?

Question @dosdude1: Will the Night Shift patch return soon?

And lastly maybe something useful for you all:

Hello everybody!

I would appreciate your help if you could tell me if my plan would be valid:

My idea is to install Mojave on an external disk ssd. When I have corrected everything and it is fully operational, clone this disk on the main disk of my iMac. Could this work?

I'm a bit afraid to install Mojave directly on my computer so maybe this could be a solution.

To clone ¿Carbon Copy? Other?

Anything else I need to know?

My machine: iMac Late 2009 (10.1) Core2duo 3.06 16Gb ram ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics with 256 MB

Great forum! Thank you all!

At the moment, APFS Encrypted volumes can’t be unlocked from the patched usb. I’m thinking this might be some issue with the kext cache but I’m not sure and I don’t have a fix right now.

I have been on this forum since Sierra came. After I discovered @dosdude1 patch, I haven't looked back. In fact, it has become so routine as to be almost boring... (almost, but never!). I download the patcher, use it to download the installer (Install maOS xxxx.app), create the 16Gb USB, use that to install on the previous OS on the MBP (4,1), copy that installer from the MBP to another USB and use it to update the OSes on the two other Macs I have (both supported). Not once have I had any problems with patcher software - except this last time when - silly me - I forgot to reboot before trying to create the USB patcher/installer. I have learnt to wait for a day or so for the latest version of the beta, GM, of final versions to show up on dosdude1.com. I couldn't be happier. I download once, and install many times. Unfortunately, I am not as versatile or productive as @pkouame for example, but I enjoy your works. Thank you, all those who have made these possible, esp. the starter of this thread and all those mentioned on the OP.

Hi there.
I am new here guys. I just wanted to ask a few question that i have from reading this thread.
I have a mbp early 2011. And i plan on making a clean install to mojave. If i do everything with mojave patcher. Will i have the transperancy, the cam working and the night shift or do i have to find some patches some users mentioned? I mean if so, do i have to apply those patches one by one manually or they are/will be included on the mojave patch/update from dosdude1?
Also since i am planning on formating/restoring everything (apfs-ssd), can i restore to apfs encrypted or just apfs?

Thanks a lot and sorry if this is answered somewhere.
