Ok, this is my experience with APFS ROM PATCH:
Original rom patch:
-MacPro 3,1 -> SUCCESS
-MacBook 5,2 -> BRICK
New rom patch:
-MacBook 5,2 (same recovered with new chip from EBAY) -> SUCCESS
It takes a lot of time to flash, DO NOT, DO NOT interrupt the process unless you are interested in a nice door stopper

so if using journaled format stops it from updating. then how do we update it ?

also i just read a post stating that fusion drives or hyper drive are not supported with apfs. my mid 09 mbp has a 1 tb hyper drive installed and apfs works on it just fine. so unless that was fixed at some point. just throwing that out there as will

To update a HPFS formatted system, one has to use the USB installer method for each 10.14.x point update (this is not available for beta versions).

Yes, it's soldered. It's difficult to change unless you have the right tools. I, actually replaced mine with only a soldering iron and used zoom in my phone camera to be able to see the chip. I managed to do it but it's an ugly job (it worked though). Beautiful job considering I'm 59 an have cataracts

Got it.
I insulated a headphone jack and plugged it in -> now digital out shows up as output option.
Interesting, though, that Apple managed to detect the presence of a digital (opto) plug for the first time with Mojave. Definitely different behaviour than before under High Sierra and older macOS verions.
[doublepost=1542542889][/doublepost]S/PDIF combo plug - details for the technically interested...
Detection of type of connector, three cases:
a) no plug present
b) digital (opto) plug present
c) analog (electrical) plug present
see screenshot of data sheet. Pins 1, 4, 5 can be used to determine the absence or presence of the different plugs in the jack.

I started the app - for testing only.
Got no message which is shown in start post (with different chip names).

But it told me to shutdown and restart wuth pressed power button for a few seconds.

Does it flash immedeatly or can i start flashing manually after patching rom?

you must restart with pressed power button and then run the rom patcher. It will not display different chip names if it is able to identify your rom chip. Just leave the rom. patcher doing its thing and remember, DON'T INTERRUPT THE PROCESS. It will take a while, about 15 to 20 minutes in my MacBook 5,2

Just checked it with High Sierra and it's the same. It will not show any digital output unless you connect the cable. (nMP 6,1 + MBP 9,1)
Might be different on the cMP since it comes additionally with discrete S/PDIF Toslink I/O
Don't have Sierra to see how it's been handled there..

I´m not talking about the sound output options in the control panel but the system info on audio: There, in previous macOS versions the digital option showed, independently of plugged or unplugged state. I checked with a MBP 5,2 15,4" on High Sierra. For El Cap behavior on MBP 4,1see #10554.

But since it technically still works, I´m happy still ;-)

Damn, iMovie 9.09 too? It was always a lot more useful, and performant, than iMovie 10.

The full app is downloadable off Apple's website as an updater package (or was, once upon a time) and I was going to install it sooner or later. It's not as good as FCPX or Premiere, but it's significantly better than the new iMovie, imo.

Wait, that's actually iLife '11, not '08. I'm hoping at least that is still functional.

Sometimes software as old as the Snow Leopard era can be coaxed to work on modern systems by copying enough old frameworks and screwing around with DYLD_FRAMEWORK_PATH to get it to launch. If anybody has mission-critical old software that's broken on Mojave, feel free to upload a copy and I'll see what I can do!

Macbook 8,1 here

Notes app doesn't work (just crashes on opening) and dark theme resets to normal from time to time. 10.14.1, all patches are up to date.

Tested Mojave 10.14.0 and 10.14.1 with my beloved iMac 10,1 27 Late 2009.

Everything works like a champ... Everything? Nope TDM does not work :)
Trying to activate the Target Display Mode will end in a short black screen and the iMac will show its own Desktop again (GPU: ATI 4850).

Any chance that this will get resolved in future versions?

Thanks

I experienced the same issue with TDM on a 11,1 iMac.

Considering that I need that feature but it doesn't work on Mojave, I ended up installing High Sierra in a small partition of my SSD only for that, booting it when needed.

I ended by restoring High Sierra again. Perhaps i will try it sometimes later, but dual booting just for TDM is...mmm... not practicable (for me!) :)

It is not that bad! It requires to reserve some space on the drive for the additional OS and you have to remember to keep Option pressed at booth and select High Sierra.

In any case, I agree with you as it is not the perfect solution.

Do you think there’s any way to do the opposite? I want to get Leopard running on my MB7,1, just for fun.
