That did it. Interestingly, it wasn't a second volume, but a directory left in the /Volumes directory with the same name. I was able to delete the contents and rmdir the leftover directory (no umount required). I'm thinking the previous failed attempts had left the crud behind.
I'm off to attempt to install Mojave on my MB 4,1!!
Got it! Thanks to all who helped.

From these permissions issues you have seems you attempted a Catalina HFS+ installation, because I had similar during my experiment, however setting "uid 0" right permissions for each folder is enough complex, but about issues using "sudo" you can try this, booting from your HighSierra with CMD+S (single user mode):

mount -uw /
chown 0:0 /usr/bin/sudo
chmod 4511 /usr/bin/sudo
reboot

Anyway, repairing global volume owner/group mismatched permissions is no more possible since El Capitan I guess, so re-installing to repair them would be a better choice.

edit:

I understood, you have downgraded from Mojave to HighSierra, then of course things won't work, because downgrading a minor version is possible example from 10.14.5 to 10.14.3 , but you have downgraded a major osx version. So you surely have to re-install.
Thank you very much for your reply
The appstore is still not working when i boot into lion 10.6.8 i can still sign in there but i am unable to sign into appstore on mojave

Hey all:

I am sure this is a known issue but I am looking for a better solution that what I am finding.

I updated my MacPro 4,1 to Mojave using the dosdude patcher method.

Had a few issues, but all seemed to work.

At one point I lowered the brightness of my screen to min and now I am unable to get it back to normal. Turns out this is a known issue in Mojave. (Pretty sure it has nothing to do with the patcher or my system. Just another one of those Apple screw ups, I think.)

Wherever I look people are suggesting apps like Brightness Slider etc. Which would be just fine: IF IT WORKED!

When you install any of these brightness utilities, even at their max they bring up the brightness to the min of the system! They have no way to brighten the screen to what used to be the system max.

What good is that?

Does anyone anywhere know a solution? Does the issue persist after restarts? Is there a command-line method? Or anything at all? I just need to go back to my system max brightness and I swear on Jesus I will never, ever lower the brightness ever again for as long as I live.

Thanks all.

Emile

Well I also bit the bullet and applied apfs rom on mbpro 5,5 Nvidia mcp79 chip.
it took 20 mins to complete...was a success!!!the scrolling text is still there though.
has to be there?I also applied the patches from DUDES1 1.3.2!! leaving apfs patch
unchecked!!forced rebuild caches..still there! it has to be there no matter what?
can it boot apfs natively for Catalina?

I am running Mojave on a MacBook 4,1 using Julian Fairfax's tool but I have a few questions on how to fix a couple issues
I downgraded to high Sierra still the exact same issues persisted (not using apfs patch, patched how the guide instructed by booting in the installer and typing patch into the terminal)
1)I cannot access the Mac App Store using my Apple ID
View attachment 845798
2)I cannot type anything into terminal as it shows the process is completed
View attachment 845799
3)The isight camera does not work
can anybody point me in the right direction , help out friend in need pls
1) has been encountered on various Macs, also supported ones - solution is to fiddle around with your account (logout, log-in, enable/disable/enable account). If to no avail, call Apple support!
2) close the terminal window _and_ quit the application, then start anew, then it works
3) known problem on this machine (in particular), no solution there yet (other unsupported Macs have this from time to time also, but at least principally can use iSight - not so on the MB4,1, sorry).

Nice! It’s amazing running 2018 software on these old 2008 MacBooks.
I´m running 2019 software on this machine ;-)

Try this first - from preferences select your Mojave boot drive as the start up drive and restart.

If that does not work then do the following:

If you have a successful ROM update then to remove the verbose output you will need to mount the efi drive. To find which one it is use:

sudo diskutil list

This will display your drives and you can identify the efi partition. In my case it is disk0s1. Then mount this partition:

sudo diskutil mount disk0s1

After a moment the efi drive should appear on your desktop. You can then use finder to delete the following: apfs.efi, /BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI and startup.nsh.

Yes, it should now work in Catalina. My dosdude1 ROM works fine.

Yes brightness control is anises I do use the brightness slider it takes a little fiddling. I never mess with the slider in the display preferences but using the brightness slider once I find the brightness I like I make sure the restore last box is checked and it seems to work as well as launch ay login :)

Tim: I apologize for sounding stupid. I'm a bit new to this: I appreciate your response. But my question is: Before I downloaded the Brightness Slider, I had lowered the screen brightness to the system min using my keyboard buttons. When I returned to work I discovered that nothing within the system; keyboard buttons, display preferences, etc, was allowing me to brighten the slider to system max. In fact nothing had any effect at all. So I was stuck at system min.

Then I downloaded the slider. And even at the slider max the brightness only comes up to system min--which is where I was stuck to begin with. So even with the slider I can only max up to the system min.

Are you saying that fiddling with the slider may allow me to go back up to full? Or am I missing something you are saying?

This issue is mission critical to me as I need to deliver some Photoshop files to a client. Thanks for your input.

you need to put the display slider for brightness all the way up in system preference like in the screenshot because if you don't the brightness slider won't work and you brightness will appear dark the only I was able to fix was to reinstall Mojave then set my display brightness to full then toggled the brightness slide not quite full but where it was bright then made sure it restore to that setting each time I restart my Mac :)

Ok. That explains it really well. Thanks a lot.

Is that known to reset the brightness? Does it have any other consequences I need to know? Thanks a lot for your input.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

I had it happen with High Sierrra on a supported Mac, so I don't think its just the patcher etc. My keys worked, and the onscreen icons went up and down, but not the brightness level, resetting SMC did it for me, that link is about PRAM reset, and at bottom is also a link about SMC reset.

As for what will happen, all settings go to default, so loud chime at start up even if it was muted for example, or turned off etc nothing bad will happen, you may have to change some preferences back to how you like them is all.

Never had problems doing it with Mojave (unsupported Macs), although not advisable if you have installed Catalina beta (unsupported Mac) in same computer because you'd have to 'sudo nvram boot-args="no_compat_check" ' in terminal to make it boot again.
Reseting PRAM should make your Mac restore "default" brightness and sound volume

Do you have also a bootscreen and bootvolume selection by pressing ALT at startup with your Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M? Do you grab one out of a newer iMac ore are you able to flash the card with an Apple EFI Bios?

Hi all. I’ve recently updated my 2008 MacBook to Mojave using the method from dosdude. All is working well, but I made the blister of changing the password on my Mac for the first time in 10 years, and now, a month later I have no idea what I changed it to..

I only have one user on the Mac, unable to reset it using Apple ID, unable to restart the Mac in recovery mode (getting a white screen with round grey forbidden circle as many others). Anyone have a suggestion on what to do?

you can do this using Single Mode (CMD+S at power on), but I don't remember how exactly. There's a plenty information you can find using Google. Just add to your searching query keyword "Single-Mode"
