There is no reason to cling to HFS+ with Mojave. It simply makes updates a PITA.
Just changed over my Mōjāv partition d0s2 to APFS that I have done a million times and it will not boot. And doesn't show on the Desktop, but does in the Picker/System Manager at Startup and in the SysPrefs, but won't boot.

I have had nothing but problems since the Apple 2020-005/6 & Safari debacle. It's as if the issues glued themselves to the Motherboard. The bit above was trying to start from a clean slate . . . but. Reverted to an HFS+ and it boots just fine. Like I said I have done this many times with no issues. I wonder if Apple is trying to thwart Hackintosh's?!

Hello,

I recently installed macOS Mojave on my MacBook Pro 4,1/Early 2008 (4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 2.5GHz, formatted as APFS) and I am running version 10.14.6. However, it is a bit sluggish compared to what I have seen from earlier Mojave versions (e.g 10.14.3) and I am wondering how I can downgrade to that version to avoid the aggressive RAM caching. I've looked on the internet and this forum, but I cannot find a download link for this specific version, I can only find the useless Combo Update

Can anyone help me with this please, and out of interest do you recommend I use APFS or macOS Extended on this machine's SSD?

Thanks in advance

If using Dot3 choose HFS+. Unfortunately, Apple only offers Mojave full-installers back to 10.14.4 according to GIB and MDS. Finding a full Dot3 installer in the wild could lead to disaster. You can D/L the appropriate @dosdude1 Patcher, here: http://dosdude1.com/mojave/archive if you can acquire an authentic installer. Install from the USB on top of the existing install with no ill effects. FWIW - we have Mini3,1s running both versions without issues of any kind. Dot3 HFS is very robust in daily use since mid 2019. Dot6 APFS as it matured by adding lots of armour via Security Updates and other than a small increase in overhead runs adequately in a commercial environment on a daily basis. APFS receives Apple updates, HFS+ does not. X-Protect and MRT updates continue, however.

APFS patch not seen. No EFI?

Thanks for the advice - from what I've read people use the patcher version 1.2.3, and I found a legit dot3 installer online, which shows the correct version and the pacther verified it - will post again if I can get it working to help others ;)

You may need to set the Mac date back to before Sept 2019 to get things to work?? If so, turn off auto time update in the CP or changes won't stick. Can't recall when the certificates expired. FYI, just in case.

I have a 10.14.3 installer app but it's 6 GB.
Maybe you can download 10.14 from somewhere and update to 10.14.3.

10.14.3 was the last version of macOS that had good performance for a Windows virtual machine in Parallels desktop on my MacPro3,1. Performance has been broken in the VM since 10.14.4.

That is a good tip, but thankfully my dot3 installer only took 10 mins to download, so it wasn't a problem. Note that I did have to set the time to before September 2019 in the macOS Installer using the terminal in order for it to install properly

Well, guess what? IT WORKS!! Typing this from my MacBook Pro 4,1 running Mojave 10.14.3 on APFS!

In case you are wondering, I tried both HFS+ (macOS Extended) and APFS, and the latter works faster than the former, with faster app launch times and mostly smooth general usage.

And to stop the updates, I went to System Preferences and Software Update and ticked everything but "Install macOS Updates", and then used these terminal commands to block 10.14.6 and Big Sur:
sudo /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Big Sur"
sudo /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --ignore "(null)"
sudo /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --ignore "macOS 10.14.6 Update"

Then I installed the other updates such as iTunes etc. and then made sure all the patches were up to date. Thanks everyone for helping, and just let me know if I should make a guide on how to do this for yourself - I highly recommend it on 2010 and older Apple Laptops ;)

Great. Have you tried installing the latest Safari 14.0.3 on a 10.14.3?
If not, would you be able to try it? Since you’re using APFS you can make a local snapshot and return the system to its previous state in a matter of minutes in case it doesn’t work. I am using HDD(HFS+), so it would be much harder to do.

Maybe idk, as if it's one of those simple apple installers from their support site then I would, but if it involves a lot of messing around with updates etc then I might not as I'm using Chrome currently and it's quite smooth

X-Protect and MRT updates are what is important. SilentKnight takes care of that, nicely. Unless storing nuclear codes on an unsupported Mac it shouldn't be a problem at 10.14.3. ?

Accidentally deleted. Might try to recreate later.

Ah ok, I might try it if I have time, but I recommend seeing if anyone else can do it or try making a new external Mojave volume or something as I might not have time sry :)
No pressure at all. I might actually go through the distribution info first to see if there are any minimum OS requirements.

Sorry to bump-into this thread and apologies if this has been discussed before - a quick search didn't yield any relevant info...

Just recently updated a legacy iMac11,1 from HighSierra to the latest Mojave 10.14.6, using dosdude1's patch and everything is smooth as silk...

HOWEVER I'm noticing that Finder keeps hogging the CPU with console reporting repeating instances of notify_check(<private>) == false. This only happens after I access the root path of the device where the OS is installed, in other words if I don't touch said folder in Finder this behaviour doesn't trigger. It's worth mentioning that the root folder only contains the 4 default OS folders, i.e. Applications, Library, System and Users with no additional modifications having been made to the OS in general. Could anyone shed some light to this or advise on how I can go about finding the root-cause of this and possibly fixing this?

Thanks all!

There's a way to make the Console.app show the private info.
https://eclecticlight.co/2020/05/25/how-to-reveal-private-messages-in-the-log/
https://georgegarside.com/blog/macos/sierra-console-private/

The root should have more than 4 folders. Press Command-Shift-Period to toggle showing invisible items in the Finder.

Thanks for the tip, trully appreciated. Upon enabling private data logging this is how the repeating log shows:

notify_check(user.uid.501.com.apple.LaunchServices.database) == false

also getting lots of:

Bundle 0x117d9f048 does not have supported regions plist entry. (not quite as many as the previous entry, still running at about 10% of the first entry)

Any take on what's happening and how to proceed?
