after several attempts in "extended" format I managed to install "Catalina" on the MacBook pro 13 "(Mid 2009) on external mechanical usb disk" WD Scorpio Black "in APSF don't ask me how it works I'm trying to understand how I did ... .. let's say a luke strike (in Italian una botta di ciapet) .....

Is anyone else getting KP on boot up in beta 3 and 4? Safe mode runs fine but disables hardware acceleration to a point that makes the device unusable. Could it be startup apps causing it because they are not updated for Catalina. iMac late 2013, Mac mini 5,1/2010. Just got a fresh ssd to try a clean install on cMP 5,1 with metal support card.

what Cat patcher version are you using they should be downloading the latest Cat dev beta when you download Cat is downloads to your download folder keep it there if you move it to your Application folder then upgrade then upgrade it erases it from the applications folder and when you download a copy the best way to check if it is current right click on the install macOS Catalina beta get info then it should say 15.0.17 but make sure you erase your usb to macOS extended journaled

The patch I downloaded was from dosdude1 in Post #1. The Cat I downloaded was the direct Apple link Post #31. Unfortunately, this is all I have in downlaads

Catalina DP4 released, build 19A512f. Strangely missing FirmwareUpdate.pkg:

View attachment 848484

Not sure which product-id you downloaded, but inside the official "Install macOS Catalina Beta.app" beta 4 , exploring the packages and mounting the InstallESD.dmg there are the "EmbeddedOSFirmware" and "FirmwareUpdate" pkgs.

All the main Catalina binaries have been (re-)compiled by apple on 12 July 2019.

A weird thing is that inside the info.plist I read the build number as 19A512e , while instead should be "f" , anyway not so relevant.

Installer version: 15.0.18 .

Usually Apple sends a standalone FirmwareUpdate.pkg, like with yesterday 10.14.6 DP5. Only when it's a full install Apple puts inside the InstallESD.

I'll check the InstallESD.dmg after my download ends, will take hours since the CDN I'm connected don't send more than 350~450KB/s down here…

It is not weird.

19A512e is the build of the system that was used to create build 19A512f. So 19A512f is what you get. 19A512e is what apple had before you got 19A512f.

Right, it should be their internal code to identify a stage of development, anyway I noticed that the final letter of a build is not so relevant, for example the previous Catalina DP2 was 19A487L while the Catalina PB1 was 19A487M , but comparing their internal binaries they were compiled exactly at the same date.

Another example during Mojave 10.14.5 DP5 (18F131a) it was exactly the final 10.14.5 (18F132) even if they released after a week, almost all the internal binaries matched 4 May 2019, that was the DP5.

I can confirm this too on a MacPro 3,1. With a boot USB made using the 15.0.18 download and the b10 patcher, the boot progress bar gets 1/3d of the way across, progresses to a spinner on a dark gray screen for a second and then the MacPro powers down.
While no errors when creating an installer usb with 1.0b10, the resulting installer simply shuts down the system when you attempt to boot it on a MacPro 3,1.

The Wraper Frameworks for Old Nvidia not working in Beta 4 (19A512f) not test on Intel HD 3000
Hope @ASentientBot fix this

Of course the non-metal acceleration won't work neither on IntelHD3000 since as other opengl-based GPUs (apart on their own drivers) they rely on OpenGL, CoreDisplay, SkyLight (frameworks), and IOSurface, IOGraphicsFamily (kext), even if I guess the issue in this specific case is only the SkyLight, I am confident @ASentientBot will develop a new fix.

Maybe there is something new in the beta 4 kernel, so a new patched prelinkedkernel (for the installer) is required, on my machine I can use quietly the stock basesystem beta 4 prelinkedkernel, because it's natively supported until highsierra, hence stock IOUSB* still work OOB.

Just for information from Catalina bet 4 on Metal GPUs Drift screensaver started to work.

Will try it also on a non-metal environment (CoreImage-OpenCL), and report here if this new screensaver rely only on Metal, can't test it obviously on opengl since on Catalina beta 4 as reported by @chris1111 the opengl fallback requires a new @ASentientBot fix (hopefully just a new SkyLight wrapper)

edit:
not sure if they were already present on Mojave but probably they added some new flowers wallpaper.

edit2:
While Flurry.screensaver still works on Catalina beta 4 only with CoreImage-OpenCL (disabled Metal and no opengl-fallback), Drift.screensaver only shows a blank screen, so I guess it's written exclusively for Metal API.
