there are encryption issues with certain Macs best way is to Install Catalina then try encrypting

Hi, if you read my posts you'll see that that's exactly what I did, tried a few times, it doesn't work.
Filevault completes, I restart the machine, get prompted OK with my user to enter the password for Filevault but once I enter the password the machine reboots on its own. There's something to be fixed down there.

@dosdude1 @ASentientBot @parrotgeek1 Just applied the new USB Legacy patch, but it didn't solve my issue of caps lock/nums lock/scroll lock leds not lighting on USB wired ADJ and KRAUN Italian PC keyboards on Macmini4,1.

PS: I have re-applied patches 1.1.7 , forced cleaning the caches, but CPU is still 33-40% with system IDLE and no apps opened. With the same hardware macOS 14.6 SU2, the CPU is around 14%. The Catalina kernel_task is much more heavy until now with Penryn Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 ghz.

Ok so MacPro 3.1 here, Nvidia GTX 650, Displayport output not sending signal to second monitor via HDMI input. Switched to HDMI to HDMI cable and signal on second monitor is good.
Also noting no audio via HDMI, have used the old HDMIAudio.kext that is used in Mojave, Sierra etc.
Anyone have similar problems. And more importantly solutions.

Hi all,

Did post this in a sperate thread but did not get an answer. Apologies for being slightly off subject but I thought due to it incorporating Patcher it might be on subject!

I am looking for some advice on my Macbooks

I have the following computers,

  1. MBA 11' (mid 2013) i5 1.3GHz , 4GB ram, 121GB Flash Mem , Intel Graphics 5000
  2. MBP 13' (early 2011) i5 2.3Ghz, 16GB, 256GB SSD, Intel Graphics 3000
Both are now running Catalina I used the Patcher on the MBP 2011 it worked perfectly on the second attempt, the first attempt did not go well, ended up doing a clean install from scratch of the MBP, Lion to HS and up, crazy!

I am thinking now I have the MBP running along nicely on Catalina maybe I should ditch the MBA?

I don't code, I use DJ software, Office package for work I usually plug up to monitors when in the office or at home so screen size does not bother me.

What are your thoughts on this?

Brightness control working for me on an iMac 8,1 with GeForce 8800, both via keyboard and system preferences. Software Update is not patched for any unsupported mac yet, I don't believe.

I think the issue some people are mentioning about the incorrect installer version is just an Apple mistake. The "Get Info" in Finder shows 15.0.32 but the "About" within the installer app still shows 15.0.31, Apple probably just forgot to update the text

no, just same old installer with size 8594.5mb. When you install it mac just reboot and that’s it. Still same beta. Checking everyday but still the same. I guess I just need proper installer of release version but cannot find anywhere and can’t download it from the App Store. @dosdude1 patcher is the only way but it’s keep on downloading beta. Is there a way to get release version from Apple servers directly?

Go here for instructions
My MacPro5,1 had 141.0.0.0 boot ROM. I tried several ways to have it upgraded to 144.0.0.0.0 but the only one that worked for me was to first do a clean install of High Sierra (I used dosdudes's High Sierra Patcher to get the full High Sierra Installer) and then upgrade from HJigh Sierra to Mojave 10.14.6. This time it required me to upgrade the ROM. I didn't need to do the Mohave Install after that.

But my more pressing concern was that I am getting the same error as talkenrain and I thought upgrading the ROM would solve it, it did not. I'll post with more details.

I'm having the exact same problem. I have a MP 5.1 with a RX 580 GPU currently running Mojave. I've re-downloaded Catalina several times using DosDude's patcher v1.16 to my hard drive then erasing and using a USB stick for the install. I've watched the video about 10 times but don't see what I'm missing. I keep getting the same error after booting to the USB stick then selecting "reinstall macOS" from the macOS Utilities menu.
Any ideas?
My configuration is almost exactly the same as yours and I am getting the exact same error as you. I've tried so many different ways to install after checking drive formatting, using the USB installer, internal installer, installing direct to disk and nothing has worked so far.

Installing using the installer gives me the "Catalina is damaged" error. If I run Terminal, then it tells me SIP is disabled.

Installing in place I get SIP is enabled and cannot go any further.

I've added my notes on what I've done.

BTW, I was able to upgrade my MBP5,5 with no problems using the USB install method. This gave me false confidence that I would have no problems upgrading the MP5,1.

New Dosdude Patch Update "Legacy USB Support Injector"
Hello, have installed successfully, using dosdude latest patcher, Catalina 10.15 on MBP 15" early 2011 (8,2), with i-GPU / loginhook software solution for defectived/infamous dGPU. Today patch updater indicted a new "Legacy USB Support Injector" patch ("This update fixes an issue where some internal iSight and USB webcams may not work with Catalina") which in any case I don't seem to need. Nonetheless to keep up with updates, I installed to only have upon reboot a boot loop indicating the machine encountered a problem .... I went back to USB stick and reinstalled the "USB injector" in 8,2 list, and was able to login successfully. I also seem to have lost the ability to access Updater in Applications enabling me to see installed patches and their versions with individual reinstall option. Any thoughts on these 2 issues? Many thanks. JP/Zfrogman

Btw Incredible work from Dosdude, Julian(allez la Suisse!), @ASentientBot and Co. mentioned in the initial wikipost "Credits". that "Make the vintage Mac planet great again!" (and by deflection contribute to reducing waste and pollution)...

I suggest upgrading the firmware to 144 first. Ask for help in that forum:

I guess you didn’t see my attachment. I did that and my mp5,1 now has the 144.0.0.0.0 boot ROM.

My first few posts here. I've used this forum and especially dosdude's work output since my Macs have aged (but still very useable) and no longer supported. Heck I even upgraded my MP to 5,1 and added/replaced hardware so it runs faster than it ever did. And my iPhone and iPads needs the latest macOS to be compatible so thank you dosdude!

This isn't true. You're thinking of current AMD cards, for which SSE4.2 (not SSE4.1, which is required to even boot Catalina) is needed. There's a patch for this, but it was never explained here in much depth, to my knowledge, so I'm not sure quite how it works.

I don't think there's a clear explanation of why the 6xxx cards don't accelerate. If I remember correctly, the drivers load, but no acceleration is achieved. This has been the case since Mojave. (I've never had access to one of these machines to test, but several experts couldn't get it working so I highly doubt that I could.)

Those GPUs are notoriously unreliable anyways, so most people just elect to disable or swap them out.

Hope that helps clear things up a little. Please try to avoid spreading misinformation, it confuses people.

@Zahilla ^

I disagree, I think you WOULD be able to find a solution. I’ve seen your work on the video patches and I’m extremely impressed. So impressed I am willing to send you a machine with the video card in question if you would be willing to give it a shot. PM me if you’re game.

Hello,

I'm currently on Mojave 10.14.3 (18D42), my Mac is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) with Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB and a 250Gb APFS ssd hard disk. In System Report I see Boot ROM Version: 82.0.0.0.0.
Question is can I securely upgrade to Catalina? I'm planning on do a fresh install, reformatting my hd after do backup.
Thanks, hope to ear from you soon.

I would like to thank everyone, especially @dosdude1 , @0403979 , @TimothyR734, @pkouame, @jackluke, @ASentientBot, @testheit I managed to get a new Air (not so new), but compatible natively with macOS Catalina, it is a 2012 model 11" 4GB RAM 120GB SSD , I passed the MacBook Pro 2010 13" forward, thank you for your hard work, I will continue here if it is helpful to help the other forum members and also to continue learning from you great masters.

Hello KernkraftX360, negative success; have tried multiple times installing patch (with forced cache reset) and even reinstalling Catalina (both from USB stick) to then post-install process but obtain same result: boot loop w/white screen and multilingual message indicating problem had occurred. Also updater once login'd keeps popping up asking to update Legacy USB injector. I have only seen a few MBP 2011 8,2 posts i this forum and haven't seen anyone indicating a problem now or beforehand. Hopefully Dosdude may have an answer regarding the Patch updater (v. 1.1.7) and Legacy USB update.

PS. I probably need to be clearer: I regain access to my system UI via USB stick "Post-Install" by reinstalling the Legacy USB injector patch contained in the Dosdude's 1.1.7 patcher. I revert back to the experienced boot loop if I try to install the suggested update patch. For now I will just ignore the Legacy USB injector update when it pops up after login to desktop.

Looks to be an issue with your Catalina installer app. Try downloading a new copy with the tool.
I get the same error. I've downloaded new copies twice.
In place upgrade also doesn't work. Install shows 19a558d which is beta 8 version...
Using the latest 1.1.17 Patcher app

Thanks.

Darn, okay. I'm extracting the DP1 installer right now to see if there is any Catalina build that doesn't use AVX there.

Edit: DP1's libmecabra.dylib is also all illegal instruction-y :(

We'll either need some sort of emulation (way too complex for someone like me), or another attempt at forward-porting the library from Mojave.
Sad....Would you teach me how to do for your temp solution to let Japanese IM work on CAT?
Thank you!

This is a MacBookPro 5,2... same as the one you recorded the video but with the glossy black finish.

Same issue using the APFS patcher to boot or starting it natively, after I enter the password it reboots like a reset.
Hope there’s a solution... if there’s anything I can do to help let me know.

Thanks!

If this helps, the same stuff happens with Mojave under APFS.

Under latest 10.14.6 Mojave APFS and booted natively, enabling FileVault... if restarting before the conversion to encrypted is finished and rebooted to that partition (natively or not) the password is not accepted, which is simply crazy because it hasn't changed lol.

Something is pesky wrong in there.

Hello,

Sorry for long post, I can't even make the bootable usb on my Mac, it just crashes, it reboots itself and the log is what I'm posting now.
I've downloaded 2 times the patcher from @dosdude1 website, and 2 times the os installer directly from the patcher.

First tried with a SanDisk 16Gb and then with a 32gb brand new Kingston usb stick, formatted in macos journaled as video tutorial said.

Any know bug?

Catalina 10.15.0 release (build 19A583, installer 15.0.32) running well on my MBP5,2 17", mid 2009.

First cloned the internal SSD Mojave 10.14.6 to a frehsly APFS formatted external SSD (Samsung 840 EVO). Installed Catalina over it with dosdude's patcher 1.1.7 via USB installer. Also installed Nightshift with the patch updater. Checked again stability and performance like with the betas. Then swapped SSDs - Catalina is now on SATA as production system! TRIM support is on. Mojave SSD kept in reserve to be connected to USB just in case.

Everything behaves very stable. Prepared a lengthy Keynote presentation today: the MBP will travel with me to a physics+computing workshop in Kathmandu, and I'm confident it will not cause any problems. Yet I'll take the USB installer with me, and the Mojave SSD, and a screwdriver.

What a pleasure. Thanks Dosdude, ASentientBot and all contributors!

Running with the 9600M GT, dark mode, reduced transparency to reduce the work for the graphics. The machine is a bit slower than with Mojave it seems, which may be due to photoanalysisd and CalendarAgent activity in the background.

(MBP5,2 17" mid 2009, 2.8GHz T9600, 8GB, APFS ROM patch applied, Samsung SSD 840 EVO with APFS, Catalina 10.15.0.)
