Exactly. That explains why they are listed in these PrefPanels.

Works for me here on a MacPro 3,1 with BCM94360CD using patched 10.15.5. I can connect with Bluetooth sharing in both directions to and from a MacBook Pro 14,1 running 10.15.5 and send files. Don't know why anyone would use that when AirDrop is functional though. I would look at the possibility that the bluetooth plist files got confused during the switchover to the new BCM94360CD. As I said before, I once had a particular boot volume that showed that problem. In that case, I resorted to a complete clean install to clean things up rather than digging through plist files.

I finally got around to trying out the upgrade to 10.15.5. I updated my late-2008 unibody MacBook Pro to Catalina 10.15 a while back, but left it there in case any bugs arose. At first I tried the "install in place" option but it didn't work - it just rebooted - so I burned the update to a USB stick and tried that.

It hanged at the end of the final reboot, with a full loading bar, but after forcibly powering the machine down and rebooting it appears to have worked - perhaps it just got stuck at the end. Now I have 10.15.5. Here it is running Chrome, Maps, and the Podcast app with an external monitor:

aSg5Akl.jpg

It's a 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo with 4gb of memory and a Kingston V300 SSD, plus a second hard drive with Snow Leopard purely so I can run Logic Express 9 (somewhere about Mojave it stopped working).

I also have a ThinkPad X61, which has a very similar specification but was released a year earlier. It's a 2ghz Core 2 Duo with 4gb of memory. It runs the 64-bit version of Windows 10 Pro natively, but it gets very hot and sadly the monitor connector is VGA. For all the opprobrium heaped on them Microsoft tends to let older hardware became naturally incompatible with Windows rather than taking it off a special list.

Also, by gosh, Apple's screenshot application is bizarrely unintuitive. It's a big step back from Grab, which came with 10.5. There's no menu bar and the icons initially confused me into taking a video of the desktop, and there seems to be no way to capture two screens simultaneously.

Thanks for the link jhowarth. But first I will try to change the BT connector position from J3 to J1. I saw this morning a picture from an online install guide of the same card...but on a MacPro 2009, not a 2008 like ours....suggesting J1 may work for the BT cable. If no success I will resort to these link suggestions.

Successful Beta 10.15.6 install on MBP8,2
Hello Everyone
FYI; successfully installed as per instructions using "CatalinaOTAsufix" 10.15.6 Beta (19G36e) from 10.15.5 on MBP 8,2 (15" early 2011). All programs used (primarily MSO 2019, Acrobat DC, PS2020, Indesign 2020, Parallels Desktop 15) run without a glitch and without the initial Office launch errors encountered in 10.15.5 (and .15.4) update. Used latest 1.4.4 Dosdude patcher. Thanks again to all and this forum to keep us productive day in and day out.

With the help of @jackluke, I was able to add Airdrop to my aging 2010 15" MBP6,2 (10.15.5.2) with a USB 4.0 Bluetooth dongle and these instructions here: page-229

Unfortunately, Unlock with Apple Watch doesn't work. You need Bluetooth 4.0 AND WiFi 802.11ac. A question for all you technical wizards. Would I be able to add a WiFi 802.11ac USB dongle (Like This) to use with "Unlock with Apple Watch"?
I did it in my Macbook Pro 2011 with this

This worked perfectly. How come this isn't posted anywhere? I couldn't find this info anywhere. I am now on latest version on my 2009 MBP.
I also have a mid 2009 machine, MBP5,2 17". APFS Rom patch by dosdude is applied.
I am using the OpenCore loader, generated with jackluke's USBOpenCoreApfsloader2.app, regularly to install OTA updates to a USB disk in Catalina (system settings->software update enabled with jackluke's CatalinaOTAswufix.app).

What happens when booting with OpenCore into the macOS Installer, is that it injects LegacyUSB into the prelinkedkernel used in the process. This is necessary with our old machines when using a USB disk, otherwise USB access fails.
OpenCore also recognizes for sure the volume macOS Installer (not necessarily does the alt/opt boot selector).
I wasn't aware a similar thing was necessary also when doing "Install to This Machine" with dosdude's patcher; my lack of understanding.
Are you also working with a disk on USB? Do you have the APFS ROM patch?

When installing from a bootable USB installer prepared with dosdude's patcher (which I normally do), as you, I had no need for OpenCore loader, though it is still handy that it shows all the available volumes with their proper volume names, unlike the alt/opt boot selector.

There are quite a few posts in this thread regarding the OpenCore loader etc., e.g. #9758 pg391, #9656 pg387, #10873 pg435. But you're right, I also think the OpenCore procedure and use cases would deserve a more prominent mention.

EDIT: tried an "Install to This Machine" (10.15.5.01 over 10.15.6b1) to the USB disk of my MBP5,2. There was no need to use OpenCore loader in my case, worked fully automatic. Then again to 10.15.6b1 OTA using CatalinaOTAswufix, OpenCore loader, 1.4.4 post-install patches.
I find the tools from dosdude, jackluke etc excellent and reliable. No problems observed in quite a few install cycles.

To TimothyR734 who is watching this thread carefully and is very active helping the less-experienced of us: thanks!

(MBP5,2 17" mid 2009, 2.8GHz Penryn T9600, Nvidia 9600M GT, 8GB, APFS ROM patch applied, Samsung SSD 840/860 EVO with APFS. Catalina 10.15.5)

@Blackriton :
I have exactly the same "Wifi / BT" card as yours, also purchased from OSXWIFI. Unfortunately, after its installation (and by removing the old BT card), I could only connect the BT cable. It was impossible to connect the 3 wifi cables.
In addition, if the BT was working properly, my MP3,1 had some problems, in particular the impossibility of going to sleep or rather, on waking, signaled "that your computer restarted because of a problem, etc." .
I was therefore forced to remove this card and replace the old BT card.
I couldn't figure out why my MP3,1 was refusing to go to sleep and wake up properly with the new card.
But I am sure that experts will be able to answer ...;)

Serviteur,

I tried again today to no avail. I only managed to connect the BT cable to the J1 connector but no difference as BT doesn't work on this connector also. So I put back the BT cable to J3. Its the only cable easy to connect but impossible for the 3 wifi antennas, I agree with you on that. I think the female connector are not centered so its the reason it doesnt work. But contrary to your experience I am fortunate to report no sleep-wake problems yet..............

I'ill try a new installation of the combo card. I hope someone have an explanation about the sleep-wake issue !

AirDrop Catalina pre-patched (only for Broadcom cards) to those interested you should post the output of these Catalina Terminal commands:

ioreg -l | grep "board-id" | awk '{print $4}'
ioreg -r -n ARPT | grep IOName
system_profiler -detailLevel mini | grep "Card Type"
system_profiler -detailLevel basic | grep "Model Identifier"

Meanwhile here are some Wifi kext that I've pre-patched (tested and working) to AirDrop on Catalina unsupported Mac, they are hyperlinks so just click the one for your machine to download:

AirDrop Catalina MacBook7,1 and MacBookPro6,2.zip

AirDrop Catalina patched MacBook6,1.zip

AirDrop Catalina patched MacBookAir2011 4,2.zip

MacBookPro8,3 AirDrop Catalina.zip

AirDrop fix Catalina MacBookAir4,1.zip

MacBookPro8,1 Airdrop Catalina.zip (This machine has two different board-id)

Macmini4,1 AirDrop Catalina.zip

Macmini5,1 AirDrop Catalina.zip

MacBookPro8,2 AirDrop Catalina.zip

After downloaded, open a Catalina terminal and copy/paste:

sudo mount -uw / ; killall Finder

Then from Catalina Finder replace (do not merge) them inside your Catalina /System/Library/Extensions/

after from a Catalina terminal send these commands copy/paste one at once:

sudo chown -R 0:0 /S*/L*/E*/
sudo chmod -R 755 /S*/L*/E*/
sudo kextcache -i /

(the "kextcache" takes some minutes to complete)

At next reboot you should have AirDrop in Catalina Finder.

After you have a working AirDrop, I suggest to apply this additional fix to enable an extra AirDrop feature that apple removed from Catalina: "AirDrop Search for older Mac"

After a working AirDrop on Catalina, if you have also a Bluetooth 4.0 card (or BT4.0 usb dongle), to add Continuity (Handoff, hotspot, etc.) you can directly apply this script: catalinacontinuityfix.command.zip

Or check this other example: enable continuity from terminal

Hi @jackluke , I'm currently running perfect with your kext patches on a MacBookPro 8,1 Mac-94245B3640C91C81. I replaced the BT/WiFi card with another Broadcom. The only problem that I have is that this new card has kind of hardcoded the country code to JP. Is there a way to change it to US modifying this patches?

I saw that. It's a little more than I'd like to spend but I may opt for that if I can't get the USB WiFi working.

Hi. I tried updating to catalina 10.15.5 with dosdude Patcher. It successfully created the bootable usb, but when it was installing catalina, the instalation bar didn’t finished (like it did in Mojave), and my macbook pro Kernel-panicked. What did i do wrong. My volume is in APFS, my usb was formatted into macOS extended journaled, and the installer is not corrupted. I will try disabling the sip. If it doesn’t work, then i dont know what else can i do.
