MBP4,1 Early 2008 17" update success, Build 19H1515 is running flawlessly, SU 2021-007 brought back the built-in trackpad, which was not working (except for zooming and scrolling) in previous builds.
Hi @roysterdoyster
may I ask what are vendor and product ids of your built-in trackpad?
Does the two fingers+click works as right click?
I was never able to make it work under catalina (even with 19H1519), now I upgraded to big sur and the same issue persists.
I own a macbook pro 4,1 early 2008 15".
My keyboard+trackpad was replaced in 2009/2010 if I remember well with this:
Product id: 0x0230
Vendor id: 0x05ac
v. 0.70

Cursor is ok, left click is ok, but right click is a no go..I'm able to make it work only with an old third party app.

My built-in trackpad works with all gestures. Which is the old 3rd party app? If you let me know, how to look up model and vendor pf the built-in keyboard and trackpad, I'll sure look it up.

Thank you, I cannot write the name of the app, I was already banned because of this...
just look about this mac --> system report --> select usb on the left --> select integrated trackpad and do a screenshot like this:
1ss.png

Is your trackpad similar to this?

PM me the name of the app, please, as one never knows, if the trackpad functions will work after the next update.

My integrated trackpad looks exactly like yours.

From System report:
Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad:
Product-ID: 0x0231
Manufacturer-ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version: 0.70
Speed: up to 12 MBit/s
Manufacturer: Apple, Inc.

Hopefully this data helps.

ad 3: Have you installed any security updates yet (Read the first post carefully to get OTA updates)? I may be wrong, but I think those problems disappeared for me at some point since the last full installer. If not, search after Chrome in this thread and you'll find help there.

ad 1 and 2: You applied the post-install patches after booting from your pen drive, right? Have your tried a SMC reset? If that doesn't help, we need one of the experts...
Thanks for your answer !

ad 1 and 2 : I just performed an SMC reset. I will report if the problem persists.

ad 3 : I have not installed any security updates (running 10.15.7 19H2). I will try it out !

Hi.

Sorry for the longish post but it will probably help having a little context.

So have been updating my Mac Pro 5,1 maxed out to 128gb ram, Sapphire RX580, 6x USB 3 PCIe ports, originally from High Sierra to Mojave and now thanks to reading MacRumors forums. over to Catalina.

Right, all went flawlessly. I have migrated all my files and all seems to be working a part from one thing.
Bluetooth Magic Mouse and keyboard. I can't seem to find a dedicated thread, sorry if this has already been talked about.

Ever since having the MacPro both the BT devices needed another Bluetooth source to be connected to as the original Mac Pro one goes in conflict with my USB 3 PCIe cards. The keyboard would kind of work but the mouse would be a total pain because of some kind of interference with the USB 3 card.

So I found an interesting article some time ago where a guy had used an external BT stick (Belkin) paired with a terminal command (sudo nvram bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior=always) to get it all working through the stick bypassing the original BT on the Mac Pro motherboard. And yes it worked. But ever since upgrading to Catalina, the system doesn’t recognise both wireless keyboard and mouse when booting up the system and I have to manually select them using wired keyboard/mouse which kinda defeats the purpose of having wireless ones in the first place.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue and maybe has a fix to share?
Many thanks.

I do it everyday, of course it´s possible. All these SSD are backups made with Carbon Copy Cloner. Except the windows one that I make with Clonezilla.

If you use OC, remember Carbon Copy does not backup the EFI. You have to do it manually.

I am not using OC. This is my iMac and I am using Dosdude patcher. When I choose the external drive and restart, its open recovery;

You should try painters tape and then you wouldn't have to write on the drive.

I had the same experience with CCC on my MBP4,1 Early 2008.
I switched to SuperDuper!, which makes perfect bootable clones of my machine.
Be sure to format the target volume (external drive) in AFPS format, and SuperDuper! takes care of the rest.
I hope this helps.

You installed w/ Catalina Patcher v.1.4.4. And not OC? Boot ROM unpatched?

So, out of the 2009-2011 iMacs, am I correct in thinking the only viable ones for the Catalina patcher that are NOT Core 2 Duo are the late 2009 27" i5-750 and i7-860, and the mid 2010 21.5" 3.06 GHz i3-540?

There are a lot of Core 2 Duo models out there for not too much money, but IMO they are too slow. Even the Core i3 is probably too slow, but it's better than the Core 2 Duo models.

🧐You'll need this tool - https://github.com/jacklukem/CatalinaOTAswufix/releases/download/1.0/CatalinaOTAswufix.app.zip and your dosdude USB for the post-install. The CatalinaOTAswufix instructions are built into the app, read and understand, carefully. If the update fails, delete everything in the /Library/Updates ƒ and try, again.

Often, it takes more than one try to get it right.

Once the macOS installer completes to a restart hold <option> and select the icon on the far right to get into the USB Patcher, re-install the recommended patches, FORCE CACHE REBUILD, restart after 10 seconds. Done. 😎

Thanks. Yes I know the Core 2 Duo models will work, but I'd be buying a new machine for my daughter, and I didn't want to spend the money on a Core 2 Duo in 2021 because of the slower speeds.

As far as I can tell, the only 2009-2011 models that would make sense would be the three I listed, the the late 2009 27" i5-750 and i7-860, and the mid 2010 21.5" 3.06 GHz i3-540, but I'm not sure if I may have missed one.

Geekbench 5 scores:
3.06 GHz Core i3-540 - 500/1120
2.66 GHz Core i5-750 - 740/1700
2.80 GHz Core i7-860 - 590/2150

Based on my preferences, I usually think of entry level as around 1400 if you're getting a new machine. That eliminates the 2010 21.5" Core i3, and leaves only the 2009 27" i5 and i7.

I was looking specifically at the 2009-2011 models because they're relatively inexpensive, and they're not too difficult to get into if I want to swap the hard drive for an SSD. Getting into the 2012+ models is considerably more difficult, and they cost more too.

BTW, ironically I used to own a 2009 27" i7 with 4 x 2 GB RAM, but it was defective and Apple swapped it for a new 2010 27" i7 with 2 x 4 GB RAM. At the time I was quite pleased but alas it meant I couldn't use the patcher.

Even a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo is VERY useful. Do you own any? See sigs below. 👀

Yes, I own several Core 2 Duo machines. They are too slow IMO.

In fact the reason I'm thinking of getting the new machine is because my daughter has complained the MacBookPro5,5 Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz with Catalina that I gave her is too slow for some of the things she likes to do, including elementary school level educational web games. I'm not surprised, considering I find even just surfing on that machine sometimes can be frustrating. I need to install an ad blocker just to make it tolerable, because otherwise it slows to a crawl, even with 8 GB RAM and SSD.

That said, I have a MacBook5,1 Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz that I use in the kitchen for very light surfing and recipes, and it's OK for that.
